: Bastard-ized power stearing
fc187 09-25-2001, 03:00 PM I was instaling a new power stearing box on my friend's dad cj5. I was thinking,"no problem" "half day if that".
wrong!. when I removed the bumper and the old box <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0">
the previous owner apperently legaly blind and performed the power stearing conversion with a large hatchet <IMG SRC="smilies/eyemouth.gif" border="0">
now I am faced with having to re-box the x member and sleave the frame.
<IMG width=640 height=480 SRC="http://www.pirate4x4.com/ubb/uploads/fucj51.jpg">
Like I said I plan on re-boxing the x member and sleaving the frame, but any Ideas on more preventative bracing and support would be appreciated.

fc187 09-25-2001, 03:05 PM oh ya <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
if you look close you can see where the u joint on the box has allmost wore through the lower tank on the radiator. It was the wrong u joint, welded on to the base of the orig. rag joint.
I have probably spent more time staring at it in disbelief than any thing else today.

BossBuilt 09-25-2001, 06:40 PM Some retarded <IMG SRC="smilies/clown.gif" border="0"> wanted power steering real Bad... <IMG SRC="smilies/rainbow.gif" border="0"> ...
The previous owner of my cj5 didn't hack it up that bad....
He couldn't figure out how to line up the gear box, so he just bolted it on sqweezing the piss out of the frame, tourched a chunk out of the cross member to clear the Joint, then tourched a hole through the motor mount for the shaft. He then added a flange bearing (bolted only at one end) and tossed another U-joint to correct his allready bad aim. Then to extend the shaft he just welded some tubing to the stock shaft.

coyote 09-25-2001, 08:59 PM Don't see the problem...he qualifies for the Junkyard Mechanic...make it work while I have it then sell it, before it breaks! And I thought I bought the only vehicle that had inventive ways to do something fairly simple...not sure what to tell you other then to warm up the grinder and weld away....
fc187 09-27-2001, 10:15 PM heres a couple more pics of my progress.....

scouter77 09-28-2001, 12:44 AM At least they were good solid (and might I add pretty) welds holding it on. Because everyone knows you dont need welds that good on steering <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/laughing.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/laughing.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/laughing.gif" border="0">
fc187 09-28-2001, 07:13 AM and too boot,...the holes that the box mounted to in the plate where cut out with a torch , allmost as big as the head of the bolt, and they had washers tacked on the outside of the hole to "adapt" it to the correct side. <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/nuke.gif" border="0">
rpenner54 09-28-2001, 07:53 AM Looks like the stearing box mount on my old 54 3B. Except it was incorporated into the front bumper which was all at least 1/2" thick steal and cut with a torch also. The whole contraption weighed probably close to 100 lbs. Its scary what some people do!
Reddog 09-30-2001, 05:07 PM A blind man with a hatchet ! <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> Lookout !
fc187 10-01-2001, 07:01 AM here is my fix, It is all 1/4 plate. This allong with some sort of brace for the box should do it

I hear ya <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
between all the Cruisers I have had and all my friends Cruisers, thats usually all I work on. It was weird cutting into a jeep again. everything was just a little bit thinner and a little bit smaller. It gave me bad flashbacks of working on my buddys 74 cj5, 7 years ago. cracks everywhere <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0">
night and day difference in their frame construction (jeep and Cruiser) specially the 55's and 45's
