Put them on yesterday. Went and flexed the rig a little. They seem to fit fine with only a 4" suspension lift and a bit of fender "re-architecture". I've got some good pics. Who can post 'em for me?

Damn,

It is not to often that I see a rangie that makes mine look super weak. I like the second picture from the top! May have to make that my new desktop background. Have any more pictures?

I also have a question. I have a little more lift than you (and a bit more fender trimming), but I have trouble, (do to up-travel), fitting my little 33" tires. It looks as if you found a way to limit up travel well. I am assuming that it is not just the spring rate in the front springs and that you lowered 4" bump stops or something to prevent tire to fender contact??? Maybe a 2" body lift??? What is your secret Yoda?

Way

P.S. Damn nice rangie. I like the hitch cut off in the back.

Nice Pictures. All you did was rework the fenders? Very impressive.

I'll have more pics next week. We are going to Moab to "pre-run" some of the trails for the National Rally. Should be fun.

Basically I have the 3" Rovertym lift with his 20.5" springs in the front and the 285-325lb/rate springs in the rear with 2" spacers. I have extended the bumpstops to 4.5". The rear tucks up to where the wheel will hit the inside wheel arch. The bumpstop doesn't hit. I will probably have to extend the rear bumpstops about 2". The front is perfect. It hits the bumpstops right about when the springs get fully compressed and just before the shock bottoms out. The dro in the front doesn't show in the picture, but I have 12" shocks up front.

I have to cut around 3" out of the front fenders and maybe 4" in the rear. I still need to trim a few places and generally clean up the cuts. I will also finish removing the glue leftover from the plastic side moulding this weekend. Thinking of painting the entire lower body with that black bedliner. Looks pretty good and hides the dings.

I will also be trimming the Rockware sliders about 3" on each end tomorrow. They are currently off the vehicle. I've also got one of those fancy Durango 4X4 rear tire carriers on order. Should look nice on the back, I'll just have to add something to mount it to where the rear hitch was.

I have a 2" Body lift sitting in my garage... On the floor. I don't think I need it. I would rather keep the vehicles COG down. I could get a little more uptravel in the rear with the Body Lift, but at what cost? I think the reason your 33's don't fit is due to your wheel off-set. I think mine is only around 4.5"? They are the Gulf Coast Rover 15X8 rims.

For the Durango 4x4 tire carrier it is required to cut off the two sides and the bottom of the receiver. It looks as if in the pictures the top of the receiver hitch is still on. If that is the case, then you will not need to weld anything on. Let us all know how the rear bumper and tire carrier fit. I really look forward to more pictures. Make sure once you put that thing on to get some sweet off-road pictures and I will throw them up on the Durango 4x4 site. When did they say it will be ready to ship?

Hmmm....don't know. When I had the GCR rims I still hit fender. Maybe it is that my vehicle has some extra weight (roof rack) that makes it compress more under compression. Who knows. I would not throw a body lift on your vehicle until you go 37". You have the right thinking with the COG comment. Unless......you take the bump stops off, put the body lift on, and are able to get the wheels to stuff substantially more. However that doesn't seem to be the case.

OFF TOPIC BUT: How do you like your snorkel at low speed wheeling? It looks like the mantec one? I have heard that the vehicle suffers from oxygen deprevation. Any truth to that?

That's B.S. from someone who doesn't own one. I think the truck runs fine here in Denver and at altitude. After all it is a Rover engine. Not enough HP to know either way. Definitely catches a lot of dust, can't imagine how much the stock location must catch.

The bonus is that you can hear the exhaust resonating through the intake. Sounds pretty cool. Overall I really like the Mantec and wouldn't trade it for anything, especially the ARB raised air intake. The mantec is very tough. A friend of mine layed his Rangie on it's side while in Moab and the only damage was scratched sliders and a very slightly dented Mantec snorkel. It's tough as nails.

BTW, unfortunately I did completely cut the hitch off. I will clean it up and reweld something to attach the bumper to once I get the bumper. I can't wait.

Did you cut the rear door? And if so, did you end up with something like this:

How did you seal it back up?

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks for the info on the mantec snorkel.

When I cut my doors in the rear, they looked very similar to that. I filled the inside lip with a lot of silicon and then put some edging on top make it look a bit more complete. Glad to see other fender cutting fans out there. I have had mine cut for almost a year now and I haven't regreted it or had any problems. I would seal that door as soon as you can though.

I did cut my doors like that. I just did it 2 days ago. This weekend I plan on putting the finishing touches on the fender re-architecture and will seal the door and somehow try and make it look OK. Not real sure of how to do this yet... Any suggestions?

Fiberglass!

use Baltek Mat t2000 or Knytex mat and you will only need one lay up. Use a 4:1 epoxy not polyster resin.

That;s a damn good idea! Should I go ahead and seal the door with regular caulking first and then 'glass it? I haven't used fiberglass since my aircraft mechanic days. I am not sure where to attach the glass on the outer door skin? Do I just roll it around the outside and sand it down? I had planned on putting bedliner on the bottom half of my truck anyway.

Just figured out why you can fit 35" tires on your vehicle with less lift and less fender trimming. You are still running radius arms. Duh. I feel stupid now.

I've got a friend from Australia who is trying to getme to get those flares. The only thing I don't like is they are fiberglass. I prefer rubber.

On another note I had an accidental revelation this weekend. We were over at a friend's house getting the sliders cut up and I mentioned how I wish I could find an over-the-counter flare from another vehicle that would fit and look good. He went to his storage area and pulled out some Jeep CJ-5 stock rear flares. We put them up to the cut-outs and they fit perfectly. They will cover all of my fender re-architecture nicely and they are rubber. I will probably be getting some here real soon to try them out. The only mod that needs to be done is to do something about the bulge in the RR body and then also to cut the rear arch out for the door.

I'll post some pics when I finally do this.

You can get some generic type rubber flares from JCwhitney, and some mid 80's fullsize bronco flares look like they might work as well. I might try some of the fullsize flares when I cut the Disco up. Just a couple other options I thought I'd throw out there.
