: Convert 92 16v/5spd to 93 Sidekick automatic
rockandroll 09-15-2008, 05:40 PM I did my best with search but no luck prob me sooo what do I need to make the OBD-1 fuel injected 5spd setup work with a 93 automatic. I want to send my auto t-case to Scott@Rockrat (1.8 Kickerbox) and then use my existing transfer case. Will I need to get a different ECU or does the auto run off some vaccuum module? :confused:Is there anything extra from the donor vehicle I need? Thanks in advance for any help. I will put my hands on the donor this weekend so again any help would be great.:)
BRENTWADE 09-15-2008, 05:50 PM You will need the trany and t-case from and pre 95 and if your gona use the auto you will also need the torque converter and trany coolant lines. Yes you will need a ECM that will run a automatic. I'm sure you know all this anyways. Is your 16V already in your Zuk? If so who did your wiring harness and was it taken from a automatic or 5 speed.
I just did the convertion from Rock4xfab also, but did the 5 speed
rockandroll 09-15-2008, 06:13 PM Thanks for the quick response. Yes the motor is installed and Trail Tough did the harness work for the manual 5spd set up. OBD-1 I think.
rockandroll 09-15-2008, 06:15 PM Oh yea Brentwade I read you build it looks great.
BRENTWADE 09-15-2008, 10:58 PM Thank ya thank ya. Everything your planning sounds right. the only thing I'd be conserned about is the wiring harness because Brent at Trail Tough did my harness and he specifically asked if it was going to be for a 5-speed or auto. You may need to talk to him about the harness to make sure you don't need a auto harness. On the otherhand I would say just put a auto ECM on it and go.:D
BIGJOEDUCKSLAYER 09-16-2008, 10:07 AM It all depends if you have 180 model or a40 model transmission, if your transmission has vacum modulator it is 180 and computer only controls lock-up. You could wire that to flip switch and only turn lockup on when you want it.

You could wire that to flip switch and only turn lockup on when you want it.This is exactly how I had it in my old zuk running the kicker 2 setup. I loved the auto wheeling but it sure sucked up the power on the street
rockandroll 09-16-2008, 01:45 PM Thanks guys so the auto sucks down the power eh? I will be running it behind a 16valve EFI motor I thought it should be close to the stock vehicle did you have lower gearing or big tires? If I use the donor ECU and say it's a 3spd auto are there extra wires or sensors to deal with?
BCzuk 09-16-2008, 02:03 PM Mine was a efi 8 valve with 35's and 5.29s. The kicker 2 setup didnt give me any high range reduction so that makes a big difference
My friend had the exact same setup as me but with a 5 speed and his was alot more fun to boot around in.

Do you have the info on what wires run the torque lock-up?
rockandroll 09-16-2008, 05:20 PM Lockman no I sure don't, any help is needed. I am trying to picture when to throw the lock up switch, say I'm all locked and tire against the rock or is when I'm leaving a stop light? I have also heard that with the automatic it is sometime difficult to shift the transfer case when in drive even with foot on brake due to the pressure from the trans. and you must shift N not to much of a biggy but I then thought about a line lock for some difficult tight spot.
Do you have the info on what wires run the torque lock-up?
I'd be interested in that as well. Where would you look to find the modulator? I assume this tranny was in the earlier trannies?
BRENTWADE 09-16-2008, 10:48 PM If you have a 3-speed auto trany all you have to do is put the auto ECM on your Trail Tough harness but if you have the 4-speed you will have to wire into the harness. A bit a feedback from Brent on the harness.
rockandroll 09-21-2008, 03:51 PM Okay guys help me identify the auto trans. a friend of mine has pulled the engine and trans/transfer case from a donor he wants the motor. He said the shifter has a squeeze to shift and then a small slider switch the shifter plate only says R- D-2-L oh yeh he said it is a 1993 Sidekick.
szabotage 09-22-2008, 07:26 AM the feedback trannies are slightly longer than the 3spds. the 3spds are identical lengths as the 5spds.
szabotage 09-22-2008, 07:29 AM If you have a 3-speed auto trany all you have to do is put the auto ECM on your Trail Tough harness but if you have the 4-speed you will have to wire into the harness. A bit a feedback from Brent on the harness.
you don't need the auto ecm to make it work. they'll work regardless. and I found out that a 5spd ecm works in an auto but not the other way around. don't forget to get the kickdown assembly on the TB too
BIGJOEDUCKSLAYER 09-22-2008, 09:23 AM 93 Is early 3spd 180 style, be sure and get the vacum line and kickdown cable from donner vehicle. The 180 will have vacum tube that runs from throttle body to passenger side rear of trans. You dont need the lockup torque converter wired for it to work. what it will do is give you a feels like 4th gear, but it is only locking torque converter solid to engine with no slip. there is a two wire plug on drivers side this is for lock-up. I believe one is ground and other is 12v power. Dont know for sure look up wiring.
rockandroll 09-22-2008, 11:15 AM Thanks a bunch I think I feel good enough to go pick it up and pay the guy. I'll post up a pic or two when I get it. I will have a couple of 5spds and a Klune V for sale soon.
