First post,

jeeps on the trail right now.

Im trying to replace the Right side axle which snapped right in the middle of the carrier bearing, tried pulling on the end showing inside the locker wont budge to get the C clip out.... took the axle off the other side, shoved it down the right side took a 2 pound hammer tried banging the thing out, wont budge... Any suggestions my next thought was to take the clamps off the races, and slide the whole locker out ring gear and all, drive it down to barstow and have someone press it out, but what do you guys think? Any suggestions would be appreaciated, and what would be the likely hood this would break the locker?

Thank You,

Dan Kersey

Wheres the tampoon at? I live in Barstow.

Edit: Its got to be fixed on the trail. You could try and reinstall the broke side and rig up a keeper on the outside of your tire so the damn thing won't slide out while you limp off to the trail. If the tampoon is in the calico's, I hope its in a accessible area. Im assuming the Calico's

Make or buy something like this, limp it home and fix it in the garage ;)

shove the axle back in, rig a hi-lift handle and apply a copious() amount of grease to the outside of the tire.

I can make one of those just incase worst comes to worst and I cant fix it, but I dont know how well you know calico, but I am about an hours worth of wheeling past gatekeeper... and I dont think that thing will hold up to those 4 - 6 foot waterfalls all the way down that thing..

I have the new axles, I would prefer on the trail at least enough to have 4-wheel drive out of there then I would trailer it home and clean it all up and do it good.

Thanks

Dan

I know where your at. You can get a trailer and tow rig(4WD!!) fairly close to the top. You can go up mule canyon around the backside, or you can come in from the north west off of Ft Irwin road. My next question. Where exactly are you broke down at?! I did that trail 3 weeks ago and that trail has gotten more difficult. Do you have your own trailer and tow rig? Did you empty out your jeep of any thing you don't want stolen!? If you can get the carrier removed, I have a press at my house.

Pull the cross pin out. Tape a deep socket onto the end of one shaft. Use it as a slide hammer and beat the broken section in till the c-clip can come out.

Tape some longer like an extension onto the beating shaft. Come in from the other side, and beat the busted peice out of the locker.

Wrong section to ask about getting a chunk of 35 shaft out a locker by the way. For future reference, use the Newbie section.

It is completely empty, the only thing im worried about is it getting shot at, as far as where I am on the trail, I was heading down it at about 10 at night, and I am I think probably 3/4 of the way down it will be much fast and easier to finish going down than to climb back up... I might beable to get a trailer on the ridge above the campground, but thats as close as I can get I think... and yes it is WAY more extreme than the last time I was on it... Last time I was on that trail, you took the road above the canyon and to the left all the way down, a bit rocky but nothing like fallowing the bottom of the canyon all the way down. lol It was awsome.

You would need special permission through Calico's resort town to get the tow rig/trailer up to that position. Because you would need to go through the camp site to get there. the winding climb is just too tight for a tow rig/trailer.

I had the same situation after a hard multiple roll down Guardrail in Tellico. Except I broke both axle shafts leaving only a very small stub left in the diff on both sides. Was unable to get replacement shafts in without destroying the whole Detroit. This was over 2 days with about 5 of us working on it.

We tried the grease/hi-lift jack to hold the tires in. Ended up bending both hi lift jacks within 50 ft.

What a fucking nightmare that was.

Running a 60/14b now. :o

I noticed he's not logged on. This will be interesting:laughing: He's probably on the way to start the extraction. I hope he takes pics and post em. AND THIS IS THE REASON TO GET RID OF THE TURDY5 AS FAST AS POSSIBLE(FOR ANY NEWBIES READING THIS THREAD.

true dat.

the 35 was NEVER designed to go offroad. It debuted in the AMC eagle for pete's sake:laughing:

and in fact THAT is just a 6cyl rambler axle (7-9/16" ring gear) from the LATE 50's!!!

Different widths, and eventually built in the Dana plant, rather than by AMC in Kenosha... but still. Every time I see a Heep on a D35 rear end, I think about a 58 Rambler American.

At least the D35 became one-piece shafts.

Dave

(Be VERY glad your pants are not on fire right now) and best of luck with the recovery.

what the hell were you doing to break a 30 spline?
who's shaft was it? Yukon, Superior? Alloy?

I bet he got to bouncing and wouldn't get out of it and just stayed in the gas. When I broke mine, I broke the locker itself and stripping out the splines. Mine was that super35 kit with the full detroit. I tried to attack a climb with speed, Just bounced off of it and I didn't get out of the gas in time:homer: I was lucky it was a locker and not the axle:shaking: But that was about 4 years ago.

Here is how it is done, take note so you too can experiance the pain and suffering of 100 deg. weather underneath the jeep... 6 cyl. Superior 35 30 spline axles. manual, 4.88 gears detroit locker in rear, open up from. Rolled the jeep onto the right side, and I did what I have seen in the movies, throw the bitch in reverse, drag along your side for a while hoping the you right back up... it did, but broke the axle because of all the torque being put on the back right tire.. :(

I've been cataloging failures. Can I ask you a few more questions.
what size tire?
what suspension?
what's your total reduction?
do you have a truss or welded tubes?

p15151
09-16-2008, 05:06 PM
well that would be 33's, 4 inch pro-comp, 4.88 in the diffs. is the only non standard gear reduction, tom woods heavy duty short shaft conversion kit, and truss or welded tubes? not to sure on that one
