: 40K Hitch

Met a few guys at a local drag race a few weeks ago and one had a large Renegade type motorhome complete with a huge trailer, awning, tools, lift... the whole ten yards...

Anyway, talking to him for about ten mins and he says the truck and trailer drive well despite their weight, the trailer all loaded up is about 30k pounds with multiple cars, tools, spares, etc., but it was fine bc he had a 40K hitch on the motorhome..

Now this was not a semi type fifth wheel hitch, this was a bumper pull hitch and the tow rig was a Class 8 tractor converted into an RV.

How in the hell do you bumperpull 40K?? I didnt see any weight distribution system, no airbags, nothing, just a big ass receiver hitch... Looked around online and cant find that 'hitch' anywhere..the rear axles of the tractor can probably take it fine, but what about everything else?

Thanks

Was it a pintle type hitch on a class 8 truck they can be rated for 20,000lb vertical and 100,000 pull. See herehttp://www.safholland.us/Portal/Products/Couplers/PintleHooks/

dont think it was a pintle... seems that would be rough and noisy and would not be a good fit for something in that price range.

here is the type of rig he had and many of these types of trucks for sale list a 40k hitch..

I actually looked on Hollands website previously to see if i could find some type of bumper pull hitch that would hold that weight rating..

i have seen RV conversions that use gooseneck balls and couplers as a pumper pull hitch.
the commercial "parking lots" (car haulers) use a "Stinger"..

Something like a BH-50 is good for 80K/8K:

^^ that many have been it. i think the ball was two and five sixteenths and the receiver hitch square was at least that size or more... just surprised that i could really find anything online about it

was not a large car hauler type of hitch..

thanks

Looks like this would work too.

cool design but the tongue weights are really low.... who has a 20k load with only a 1k tongue weight? IIRC, tongue weight should be 10-12% of the loaded trailer weight unless it is something like a 4-5 car hauler or a large boat and then the pin weight could be 20% or more (hitch and trailer would need to be configured for this)

I didn't notice the tongue weights, after a little research looks like this is mostly used in an agriculture application where the trailer has a front steer axle supporting most of the load.
