1st gen transfer cases

I've got a couple of 1st gen hilux transfer cases ,2 of them have a plate aprox,3" x 4" on the left hand side of the case an the other is just the normal housing
I'm wondering if the ones with the side plate were made so that a P.T.O drive could be fitted to these cases or if these were just another style of transfer, ie:chaindriven
