My girlfriends 1999 Rodeo was having a fuel gauge problem. It would work for a few seconds when the car was on and then show empty. I did some searching and found the common problem of the sending unit going bad. So last night I picked up the new part and we installed it. The gauge works fine now, however the car doesnt start up as fast as it used too. I have done several fuel pump related fixes before and never really had that problem so I was hoping it would just be air in the lines. It took 5-6 revolutions to start last night and it seemed to drop to 3 after we had run it for a while. We put about 20 minutes of driving on it yesterday. This morning she said it almost didnt start, however once running it seems to be fine. Any ideas?

the fuel lines are both snapped in securely? You would have a hard time doing so, but you didn't reverse them did you?

I was worried about reversing them as I forgot to mark them, however they only really went on one way, and from some pics I found they are on the right way. I will double check the fittings though today. I had reveresed the hoses once or twice on my Pathfinder and it would not start at all that way. I am gonna try taking the them loose at the manifold and seeing if there is any air left in there, but I am doubting that being the issue.

Ok, here is the deal. I went to go look at it again today. All of the hoses look correct and the fittings are correct.
Before I started it I hit the key on and off a couple times and it started fairly quick each time. After I had done that a couple hours later it started fine for her, but once she got home from work it was slow starting again and even slower 2 hours later.
I am convinced it has something to do with something I did, when I pulled the hoses off there was still alot of pressure in one of the fuel hoses and the gas drained out, what is the possibility that what ever check vavle is no longer holding that pressure or the air that was allowed in the lines is screwing it up?
The pump runs for sure when the key is turned on before its started.
If no one has any suggestions I have no choice but to pull everything again and retrace those steps tommorrow.

Maybe try re-bleeding the fuel system? I don't know how it's done, but I do know you're not supposed to have air in the fuel system... Just a thought.

Found my problem, I put a small hole in the flexible fuel line contained in the pump. It would let the injectors un prime. Anyways, I ended up replacing the pump and its good.

It was not sucking air, the problem was that it was not holding pressure. The hose was old and appeared to just crack where I had to flex it to get into.
