some talking points for both meetings, I'll be trying to cover most of them at the Pasadena meeting, but we'll need someone(s) to cover all of them at the SD meeting, you guys are farthest from the trail and need to let the BLM know how far you drive to get there and ho much money you spend doing it...

here's the link to the thread in the L/U section

Simple talking Points:

Surprise Canyon Road is a road, it has been for centuries (traveled by Natives and Pioneers).

Surprise Canyon Road is recognized as a road under the qualifications for a road (or highway) established under the Mining Act of 1872.

Surprise Canyon Road was first graded and improved by mechanical means in 1874 by Remi Nadeau, paid under contract by the developers of the Panamint mines.

Surprise Canyon Road was recognized by the County of Inyo as a road prior to the reservation of Death Valley National Monument in 1933. It appears as a road, and has always appeared as a road, on all Death Valley National Monument and National Park maps printed by (and for) the government.

Surprise Canyon Road was recognized by Congress as a road in the Desert Conservation Act of 1980 (this is the Act that the CBD is trying to have the BLM alter, by litigation and legal stipulation).

Surprise Canyon Road was recognized as a road by Congress in the Desert Protection Act of 1994, as a cherrystem through the Surprise Canyon Wilderness Area.

Surprise Canyon Road is an established public road and cannot be closed to the public without agreement of the State of California and the County of Inyo (RS2477 provisions mandated by the Mining Act of 1872).

Surprise Canyon Road is a cherrystem through designated Wilderness. It cannot be managed as Wilderness, and cannot be managed as a habitat protection buffer zone adjacent to Wilderness. The Wilderness Act of 1964 prohibits the consideration of habitat protection buffer zones adjacent to Wilderness.

Happy Trails!

I'll be leaving around 1:15 (allowing time to overheat a couple of times on the way there) so yes I'm trying for both...
