: FSJ T-18 Question
JohnC 08-03-2002, 10:37 AM I have an '80 CJ-7 with a 258 I-6 and a T-5 D300 combo.
I have a line on a '77 FSJ Cherokee with a blown 360 T-18 and D20. Can anyone fill me in on what it would take to put the T-18 and 20 behind my 258? What bellhousing would I need? Is the input shaft right? Anything else?
TIA
Grandpa Jeep 08-03-2002, 02:07 PM You'll need a T-176 or T-150 (or a T-18) Bellhousing and a Ford T-18 input shaft. You'll also need a special pilot bearing from AA and maybe a clutch disc. I think your driveshafts will work, but you may need to have them shortened/lengthened. You might also have to come up with some clutch linkage parts to go with the new bell. That should be everything though.
Sundowner 08-03-2002, 02:47 PM huh?
Jeep literally used about 16 variations of the T18 in it's products, so it's a crap shoot as to what you've got.
the bare minimum you will need:
the T18 will need a new mainshaft. the FSJ one is long enough to be used as a walking stick. there's a 6"-ish long adapter between the bellhousing and the tranny case. you can reuse the stock CJ bellhousing, but you will need to redrill the bolt holes in it. you will need a new clutch disc, but not a new pressure plate. last I looked, Hicks 4x4 sells the appropriate mainshaft for your application in the $100 range.

AA also makes a trick chain drive to replace the mechanical clutch linkage. The chain drive solve all sorts of alignment / adjustment issues, not to mention that it has a much smoother operation.
Sundowner 08-03-2002, 03:01 PM given the choice,
i'd just open up a Qtec or 4wdh catalog and order all the bits for an 80 CJ hyd. clutch for a 4 banger. it's bolt-on and about half the price of the A-A kit.
JohnC 08-03-2002, 03:24 PM Okay, so this is what I'm looking at:
-New mainshaft
-Clutch
-Some bellhousing work
And I already have the hydraulic clutch.
Devil Dog 08-03-2002, 07:53 PM hold on.. that fsj t-18 will work just fine..
you'll need a new pilot bushing.. and a clutch disk.. and cut the holes in the floor panel..
i have this same setup in my cj7... the bellhousing will work.. all amc engines are the same bolt pattern.. you will have to shorten your rear driveshaft.. and lengthen your front probably..
you pressure plate will work.. and all that hoopla.. the clutch disk might be kinda hard to get alone by itself.. i had to go thru about 4 or 5 different years and models of jeeps to get it.. since most just come in the entire kit form... its 10 spline.. and you'll need a clutch alignment tool.. also kinda tricky to get... but i got it all at the local joint here..
my rear driveshaft is 20" long resting.. im spring over.. for the shifter... mine was torched off by the guy i got it from.. so i just had to weld on straight piece of steel... instead of that bent shifter.. works great.. it will damn near come out the hole you have now for your t-5.. will have to make it slightly larger.. and the transfer case shifter.. well.. mine has the U shaped shift pattern so i had to cut down a few inches into the passenger side of the tub.. made a new cover plate out of stainless.. looks sweet.. i cant post any pictures of it.. but.. if you go to webphotos.com.. and look up "jeepgod"... "jeep".. there are a few there of the finished project..
the ford input shaft and t-176 bellhousing you can use to basically get rid of that 6" extention in the one you have.. i dont see a need in it.. mine works great..

The mainshaft, AKA output shaft will work just fine with the dana 20 that's already mated to it. The input shaft is what you need to replace. Get one from a Ford along with an extended pilot bearing and a clutch disk and you will be good to go. I thought the T-5 bellhousing was deeper and won't work, but I could be wrong. The t-150 or T-176 will definately work. The Bellhousing from the FSJ donor will probably work as well if you can snag that.

True, but in fullsize Jeeps there are only two variations. The V8 T18's have the long "walking stick" (great description) input with the adapter. The T18's behind 258's had a much shorter input (longer than a '76-79 CJ version) which will bolt in to a CJ7 without any modifications. Unfortunately this guy has the V8 version, so the input shaft mods will be necessary. I believe he can use the bellhousing he has already in the Cherokee (instead of drilling his T5 b/h) along with the Ford input shaft. The adapter between the b/h and tranny will need to be removed.
ItsaCJ6 08-04-2002, 11:05 AM Don't confue him.
He can bolt the whole thing in with no mods, if he can deal with the extra length.
He will need to move the cross member back. but he would have to do that anyway.
If he needs it to be shorter he can do the input shaft swap. and use the existing bell houesing from the cherokee minus the 6 inch adaptor
OR sell the Jeep tranny/Dana 20 combo and get a Ford 2wd t-18 and the same t-176 bell housing. along with the AA adaptor. this would allow him to use the Dana 300 t-case. MUCH BETTER OPTION, IMO but it does cost more.

You mean like shift from the back seat? The V8 setup is way too long for any CJ if you don't pull out the bell to tranny adapter. The shifter would literally be near the seatbacks.
Devil Dog 08-04-2002, 04:03 PM umm... you dont NEED the short shaft.. it is nice i would guess... but i dont have it.. and i run just as good as someone with it.. its all up to you.. you can do without it.. all you will need is a pilot bushing.. and clutch disk.. and new driveshafts..
YOU DO NOT NEED THE SHORT SHAFT KIT!!!!!!!!!!!!
