I have a 86 4runner with a 22re, which has been running great until now. When I put the key in, the check engine light comes on, then when i crank it over, it cranks fine, but the engine acts like it isn't getting fuel; won't get running until it's been turning over for like 5 or more seconds, then the engine will start going super rough (hitting sporadically), then after another few seconds, it runs perfect. The check engine light turns off after it's going. It's kinda acting like my old carb'd 85 did, where you had to pump the gas a bunch to get it going, but it's FI so it shouldn't need that. I know it's not much to go on, but I'm at work and hoping someone can provide any kind of input. The check engine light is supposed to have a code associated with it - how do you check the code? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

buy one of those cheap haynes manuals at any decent parts store.
my 86 4runner did the same thing, when i pulled the plugs out i saw antifreeze. yea imagine that on a 22re. check the code first.

if you shut the engine down after it runs good does it start right back up and run fine? if so my guess is head gasket.
