: new axles in
clc900 08-03-2002, 03:00 PM Swapped in 14bolt rear and D60 front. 5.13's welded 14bolt and detroit for the D60. With the axles on jackstands I can lock the hubs and turn the D60 yoke fairly easy. The 14bolt is a bitch to turn. I mean I have to really crank on that thing to make the wheels turn. What could cause this? One of the axle shafts I had to gently hit with a hammer to get it all the way in. Not real hard but there was no way I could get it in by hand. Am I just going to burn this thing up when I get it on the road for a test drive? Is this something to worry about?
The Jerk 08-03-2002, 03:43 PM are the brakes hun gup int eh drum?
Slagburn 08-03-2002, 06:11 PM Yeah, like Jimmy said, maybe the brakes are hun gup. Or han gin. :flipoff2:
Wait a minute, you said you had to persuade one of the shafts in w/ a hammer? That's not right at all. Did you weld a truss/ link bar to it? Bent the housing with too muc hheat maybe? I warped my 14B housing welding the truss on, bent it back again w/ beads on the bottom...
ItsaCJ6 08-03-2002, 07:57 PM like they said , check to make sure that the brakes are not dragging.
Mine turns freely, remember that you have to over come the gear ratio and the brake draging only a small amount would make it hard to turn
clc900 08-05-2002, 12:38 PM I swapped to disks and took the calipers off so no, the brakes are not dragging. After thinking about it I think I have a bent housing. I cut the bottom of the pig off and welded in a plate for the bottom. Might have added too much heat to it I guess.
Next question......How do I straighten the housing???? The cheap way if there is such a thing.

I think you're right. Sorry to hear that:flipoff2:
I've heard of machine shops using large presses to straighten pigs, aside from that I have no idea.
RockJeep 08-05-2002, 02:59 PM did you make sure when you welded the spiders you didn't get any splatter on the splines or elsewhare that might be preventing it from turning freely?
good luck,
bob
clc900 08-05-2002, 03:40 PM Fawk! Live and learn I guess. Wish I would have checked it before I welded new spring perches and caliper brackets on. Not to mention the $75 bucks I paid to have the new 5.13's installed. FAWK!!!!!!!!
MR4WD 08-05-2002, 06:36 PM Pull the shafts and look through the housing from one of the hubs. If it's bent, you'll know right away...
Whenever there's new gears installed there's always tons of preload on the pinion bearings. I got new 5.13's in my Dana 60 and 14 bolt and couldn't budge anything by hand. Once you take it out and actually spin it over with oil in the bearings everything seats and you're good to go.
wheelinjp 08-05-2002, 07:56 PM Hey did you make sure the side gear was seated flat when beginning to weld it up? I would assume the housing is bent though. You can have it straightened with running welds on the bottom of the bent tube.Have it done though.

So did you weld it yourself? I wonder if the carrier is too far over to one side. Could you turn the pinion by hand with the axles pulled out?
I hope you get it figgured out. If not, I might be interested in the gears! :D

clc900 08-07-2002, 11:31 AM Thanks for all the replys! I cut and welded the plate to the housing so I may have added to much heat to the pig. I had a friend do the gears and weld the spiders. He does axles for 1,000HP drag cars so he should know what he was doing. This weekend I will tear into it and see what happens with the shafts pulled. If it turns easier then the housing is probably toasted. If it still turns hard then I will talk to the gear installer and see whats up. Hopefully like MR.4wd said the preload is pretty tight and everything will wear in once I drive it. I just thought it was weird that my D60 turned so easily and not the 14bolt when both have brand new gears setup.
