: CJ Tilt column conversions..Questions
JeepinDoug 08-03-2002, 03:14 PM I got a CJ-5 and recently I changed the seats in it. The new seats are thicker and higher, pushing me into the damn steering wheel, as if it wasn't bad enough to begin with.
Here's my question;
Which other vehicles have the same tilt column that will work in a CJ? Without the big headache of rewiring or shortening shafts. I'd love to be able to go to a wreckers and just grab one for fourty bucks and be done with it. Certain Jeep wreckers want to charge $250 just because it says Jeep on it, but the dirt, rust and spiders are free of charge. Anybody now of some good resources? Thx in advance.
Rock'em Sock'em 08-03-2002, 03:50 PM Not sure about Jeep salvage yards in the CA area...but you may want to check out Flaming River (flaming-river.com). They make replacement tilt columns for Jeeps and other vehicles. It's not exactly what you asked for, but hopefully it helps.
JeepinDoug 08-03-2002, 07:11 PM Thanks Rock'em, flaming river is a little pricey but I could use a YJ column and then get a conversion shaft from flaming river. I'm just not wanting to spend over 5 bills for a column and shaft. I know some people know there is a cross reference, so-to-speak for the cj column. They were used in other vehicles, GM vehicles, but which ones I don't know. Thanks again for your input.
TPIJeep 08-03-2002, 10:27 PM Check out Centech:

they offer rebuilt tilt columns for your Jeep.
HTH
check into a chevy camaro or truck I believe the camaro is about the same length and the truck a little longer. I have a truck tilt in mine and used a camaro in another. If you have a 76 and up the wiring plugs right in.
jeepnmatt 08-05-2002, 06:45 AM i used a column out of a chevy s-10 blazer. worked perfectly and now has brite lights and wipers on the column. matt
WheelingPiazza 08-05-2002, 07:18 AM Depending on what year cj5 you have, it its an early model then you have to either cut the dash or get out of a cj.
General truck may be able ot help you, bht they are spendy.
JeepinDoug 08-05-2002, 04:35 PM Thanks guys, My CJ -5 is a 83, The s10 blazer sounds like the column is like a YJ with the other stuff on it, which is fine by me. But the CJ shaft is splined at the bottom and the YJ had a DD connection. JeepMatt!. Did that Blazer column have a DD or a splined shaft? Might just go that way. Thx again.

no n-no no no. The YJ versions have a steel collar to prevent theft. Make sure the GM versions do too because they are known for cutting corners (my '79 Monte Carlo didn't have the steel collar like my YJ and it was stolen and recovered 3 days later in East L.A.)
JeepinDoug 08-05-2002, 05:01 PM Steel (steal) collar? Where do you mean? Around the coupling area, at the bottom of the column. I kinda like the idea of the ignition lock on the column too. The GM vehicles probably don't have that, oh well what ya gonna do, one or the other. The tilt is more desirable right now.

its the part that goes around the column where the keys go in. theifs crack that part open and start the car. That's why you see steel collars to put on GM collumns are auto part stores. YJs have the same column but that part is steel not plastic like GM.
JeepinDoug 08-05-2002, 05:20 PM Ahhh! Got ya now, I'll look for the good one then , Thx Taso
