Stupid me just put a tiny pinhole in my aluminum rad.

What's the best way to repair it? Solder? some kind of stop-leak or metal putty?

Can any of these be done with the rad in the vehicle (access is not a problem)?

if you know exactly where the crack is you could weld it or use something like jbweld. what determines if its a repair or replace job is how big and where the hole is at.

Some tobassco sauce, or ketchup would really complete the meal.

I'll have a large OJ with that. :p

Solder it.

WELD IT !
I fix lots of aluminum stuff and it sucks trying to weld an area that sombody tried to repair with some wonder putty in a can:mad:
Now if it is a trail fix thats ok but being that you have access to it and it's in the garage I would fix it correctly.

Sorry about the rant but I see it all the time

Great - everything from bubble gun to TIG welding....guess I'll just pick one and see :flipoff2:

For those that said solder....are you sure you can solder aluminum? What solder / flux?

Bill
Here are some aluminum gas rods that I found that your local welding shop should be able to get .

Allstate "sealcor" aluminum gas rod flux cored
Allstate" # 55 rubbon" fluxless aluminum solder
Allstate "strongset #509" high strenght aluminum solder which I belive needs a flux.

You could have a little monkey stand up there and add water as it drains out:flipoff2:

How about taking it to a radiator shop?

Welding aluminum is tricky if you're inexperienced because of it's super heat conductivity. You'd feel like a tool if you ended up making the hole bigger.

Also, JB Weld, while a great trail fix, is far from permenant. It doesn't expand and contract like metal does, so after so many heat cycles, it gets brittle and flakes off.

I vote for a shop. I solder up my own copper/brass radiators, but on something more valuable like aluminum, I'd take it to the pros. Also, they shouldn't charge you more than about 10 bucks.
