: Ak build question

I have an AK I assembled out of a kit that had been butchered. Someone had drilled out the barrel pin, pressed the barrel pin out then pressed the barrel out of the trunion. When they reassembled the barrel and trunion they used the same drilled out barrel pin. :shaking:

My question is about headspacing. If I knock out the fucked barrel pin and put in a new one, how could headspacing be off?

This is really more of a theory question, because I'll end up checking headspacing anyway. I'm hoping to get some clarification on the concept. If I replace a barrel pin with a barrel pin of the same size, use the original bolt, how could headspacing be off? Please explain to me.

Unless it was off when the original pin was drilled in, it would be difficult for it to be off, so it should be fine.

There have been cases where people don't get the barrel back in exactly the same location, which causes the pin to shave off a few thousandths from the barrel, making their HS off by a few thousandths. If that happens, you'd notice a bit of metal shavings coming out of the hole while pressing in the pin.

The pin should have a bevel on the ends to help prevent that though.

they pressed the barrel for a screw build?

I would check headspacing anyway, ream it slightly bigger and use a drill blank or shaft to make a new one.

or get a new pin and just say fuckit

Thanks for the answers, I think I'm gonna put a new pin in it, make sure it goes in right and go with it.

I put it together, I'm not sure what the original plan was. Either way, it's a piece of work. Who drills the middle out of a barrel pin and then goes through the trouble of pressing it back in?

Screw that.

I'd verify proper headspace as it sits... Tack-weld the ends of the pin, flap disc them smooth, and paint that sucker.

(You might guess that the 'smooth' look of a ground-smooth weld build doesn't bother me too much. "You gotta do rivets - it's the only way the gun looks right" ... Whatever) :D

Barrel pins can also be had from ak-builder.com for a buck more.

I already picked one of these up, just haven't put it in.

Although, the more I read, the lazier I'm getting. :flipoff2:

Like I said, slap a small tack-weld over the ends of the ugly pin, sand 'em smooth, and paint. :D

Buy an 8mm reamer and ream the hole out, then use a piece of a factory gas piston shank as a pin. Recycle!
