View Full Version : Crawlers that also haul?

I've been tossing around the idea of a r/c crawler, maybe an axial, however I want something that can also be run around the yard at a decent speed, with a gearing change can I get decent speed out of a crawler? Basically I would like a KOH style r/c rig, any suggestions? Anybody make a two speed trans? It would be cool to be flying around the yard then stop and switch to low and crawl a pile of rocks. Any thoughts on radios? Motors? Speed controllers? Servos? I'm not looking to spend a fortune but I want to get set up right the first time. Am I better off starting with a 2.2 class or a super class?

there are a ton of different combos you can run. you can get the transmission from a tamiya highlift they are 3 speeds i believe. and you can get alot of ratios with the axial trans with different pinion and spur gears. from about 17:1 to around 70:1. if you want a good powerful brushed motor ive heard good about the 5 turn puller motors pretty fast and a ton of torque from a brushed motor

go to a 7 turn motor, lipo batts....done!

There is a some info on building rock racers over on rccrawler.
A Holmes 5t or 7t on 4 cell lipo would be:smokin::evil:

done that, my son has an axial tuber with a 7 turn cobalt puller, mine is identical but with a goat brushless system and mine will flat out spank his. also the brushless is way better on battery run time:flipoff2:

So what kind of speed are we talking? Is it fast enough that the squirrals in the yard might be in trouble?
I'm thinking that I will end up with an ax-10(the kit most likely) I'm thinking the goat brushless motor/speed controler, lipo batts, radio I'm not sure on, would a 3 channel be best so I can set it up for digs later on? Any thoughts on what radio/servo would be good, it dosen't have to be top of the line but I hate buying things twice, what's good and decently priced?

my set up is kinda what you want. axial, goat system, 2cell lipo, 20 tooth pinion gear, spektrum dx 3.0 radio/reciever.
the goat will scare squirrles but the 20tooth pinion gear or more will give them a run for their money. on the drive way i can pull wheely's, in the grass i can flip it with the gas, burning brodies in the smooth hard pack i can flop it:D
lipo is the only way to go.
the spektrum dx 3.0 is a nice 3 channel radio that comes with 2 recievers and 2 servo's.it will cost around 250 to 300, but is worth it. i don't know how good the servo's are that come with it cause i had a decent one already.
now even with the speed it will crawl as slow and smooth as you want it to. most brushless motors will not be smooth at low rpm's but the goat is.

watch this vid. this is how they are, even know they look slower in the vid than in person.

My buddy runs the goat brushless motor and the ESC combo you can buy, and it crawls and halls ass.
If you want a really nice 2 speed tranny, they make a 2 speed R2 front dig trans
with 6:7:1 and 11.4:1 gear ratio.
I use a single speed R2 front dig and the trans is all beef, never gave me problems.

just do it......I have heard OK thinks about the goat but if you are serious about crawling/smoothness go brushed
the goat will scare squirrles but the 20tooth pinion gear or more will give them a run for their money.
I don't disagree with your first statement, but you must have some pretty slow squirels for the second to be true. The 20 tooth pinion and a goat is pretty fast (my buddy has this set-up) but not fast enough to catch my dog and my dog can send squirels into cardiac arrest!
So is your son's set up comparable with gearing and cell count (2s) or is he running a 3s? I'm considering both the goat and a MM with a 7T on 3s. I want the best of both worlds. Not so worried about the run time but that is an added bonus of the goat.

the batt are both 2s lipo's and he can't catch me except for to the charger :flipoff2: i think the squirels in my yard are more concerned with the sneaky cat than the toy that jumps into action with out notice.

OK cool so either way the squirels are screwed.
Have you tried a 3s on the puller or is Dad scared his boy might hand is a$$ to him? :p :flipoff2: Curious minds need to know! what kind of lipo's are you running? What kind of run time are you getting with your goat in this set up?

the goat set up is about 45 min to an hour. i don't know if i can run that much voltage (3s lipo) through it but i haven't checked. i don't know that his parts (or my wallet) could handle a 3s with the puller. he can break a steel ball in a rubber room. he has broken 2 axle gear sets, a stripped spurr gear, both knuckles (and he broke a knuckle on mine at the rubicon), both lockers, too many link ends, 1 steering servo, and the rear transmission output. i think he watches waay too many east coast/tennissee type video's on the computer. the lipo's are common sense rc.
edit; i think the puller motor is recomended to use a 3s though.

yeah, i think he is done with rock crawling and more into rock racing. i just need to find some peeps in the sacramento area doing rc rock racing.
haha, mini xrra:flipoff2:
