: Colorado guys...I need your help!
Roxywheels 08-03-2002, 08:24 PM I need someone that has a carbed 258 YJ(mine is an 87) that lives in my area to come over and let Rob and I compare your emissions crap to mine. We are having problems getting the jeep to idle and aren't sure if its the emissions/vacuum lines or the carb. The manuals are a pain in the a$$ to read to try and figure out where all those hoses and lines go...we think side by side comparison is gonna be our best bet! Anyone wanna help me? Or any suggestions at this point would also be appreciated. And spare the the "go fuel injected" comment at this time! :flipoff2: I'm just happy at this point that the thing actually runs! :D
Lost One 08-04-2002, 07:02 AM Icould never get mine to idle right when had the 258 in it. The bushings the the throttle valve shaft rode on where worn and it had a huge air leak because of it.
Victor 08-04-2002, 11:10 AM Is your carb a rebuilt one or was it running before? Ok this may seem like a stupid newbie answer, but what the hell. When I replaced my carb 2 years ago with a parts store rebuild and knew nothing about Jeeps I had the same problem. The mixture screws were tightened down too much and I had a difficult time at first finding them to set the mixture. They are two screws recessed in front of the carb and you need a very short (1 inch or so) screwdriver tip to adjust them. Back both out a few turns and then adjust them one at a time till you get to high idle. Anyone who knows older cars would know this, but like I said it was hard at first to find the screws. good luck!
Roxywheels 08-04-2002, 04:16 PM The jeep has been sitting for 2 years and before that the carb worked..with the expection of it cutting out from time to time when I was just cruising down the road. There was never an idle problem.
We adjusted the screws and it didn't do a damned thing. So...at this point its tough to tell if its the vacumm lines or the carb. If you hold the choke open it will run fine...let it go and it dies.
Roxywheels 08-05-2002, 09:44 AM Come awn you guys....104 people viewed this and no one wants to help me out? No one in my area that will take the time to stop by for maybe an hour just so we can compare your emissions crap to mine?
rpenner54 08-05-2002, 11:58 AM Dang, sorry but I don't have one and I don't know that I could help out that much. The only idea I have is to get a rebuild kit, I know on my last carbed vehicle that was the only thing that would get it to run halfway decent. I don't know how much a kit costs though...
Good luck... :)
4Bangler 08-05-2002, 12:55 PM Man I love my MPI 2.5L! I installed a lift for a kid with an '87 4.2L carbed pile of.....anyway, I don't envy you one bit, that thing had 3/4 mile of vacuum hose on it and it just looked like all you can eat night at Olive Garden to me. Try spraying some carb cleaner at the sides of the carb when It's idling rough, if the idle picks up you're leaking through the carb, other than that, what about the emissions diagram on the hood? Probably gone, but does anyone have one they can snap a readable pic of?
Steve N 08-05-2002, 01:50 PM Mel, try warming it up with the choke stuck open. It idles OK like that right? If that's the case it sounds rich rather than lean. If it were lean you probably have a bad vacum line. So assuming you can get it to idle with the choke open after it stays open (warmed up) then adjust your idle mixture. I would go with trying to compare vacum lines. Unfortunately it's not easy to look at the vacum diagram untill you've done it a few times. I find other people goof up all the time on them. You could take pictures but all it woyuld look like is black spaghetti.
Come on guys help a gal out!!!!

Steve...when you start it and its cold it will idle without holding the choke open....once it warms up a bit it dies. It doesn't idle rough when you hold the choke open...it idles pretty well. It will not idle without holding the choke open.
We tried using the vacumm diagram in the Chiltons, Haynes and the one on the hood...but with no luck! They are tough to read!
pokey 08-05-2002, 11:47 PM Here you go.
http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/258bbd/index.htm
You will find the vacuum diagrams and routing of all the lines on that URL.
Also, look up the Nutter bipass on the same site. You may like it.

Jettech 08-06-2002, 06:01 AM You have it backwards Mel,It idles when you hold the choke closed:)
as soon as you open the choke it dies.

Oops!! yea...what he said! LOL And THIS is exactly why I'm not doing the work!
Steve N 08-06-2002, 07:33 PM Vacume leak.
1) I would look at the intake gasket as a good source of vacume leaks. try checking the bolts again, especially the hard to ereach ones under the intake.
2) use carb clean and spray it in the vicinity of the vacume lines while running. If it smooths out/ runs faster you have a vacume leak.
3) pop a really good porno in the VCR (it will give Mel something to take her mind off the task at hand)
4) look for burned up/ rotted out vacume lines.

Thanks Steve....I already feel much better! :D
WheelingPiazza 08-07-2002, 08:06 AM When using the carb cleaner, dont be confused when it runs a little better when spraying it around hte carb area..
You can use propane bottle with a large hose on the end of it, works much better then carb cleaner. ITs a heavier gas and stays around longer.
Just make sure you dont light the propane. :D 0:D
If I still had mine I would drive up but my 89 s gone..
