soim swapping those shit ass 1.75in. leaf springs on my 74 cj-5. can you say no flex? at all. and almost no droop.. AT ALL!:mad3:

so i starte gettin at that shit. tore the old springs out popped the new yj springs in and started to see how this is going to work. BUT... i have a few concerns about how the hell this actually works.

ive done shit like spring it over, gear swaps, lockers, hi steer, and t-case gears myself, but suspension scares the shit out of me. SO my concerns are in order

1. how far can i actually stretch a cj without having to move the steering box?(how far can i push that mofo forward without the tie rod hitting the drag link on flex. AND!! how do i go about stretching it. do you just move the fixed mount forward till desired stretch is met?

2. how do i know if the axle is straight under the jeep? i talked to my friend and he said that if the shackle angles are the same then that means that the tires are parallel, but im not sure. any techniques you people have used to do this?

3.what is a good shackle angle?

4. how do you mock all that shit up!!

any help is appreciated it sits now with stands under the frame waiting for mounts to come from ruffstuffspec.

I can answere #2

I used a level and all-thread with the nuts. first I got my junk level using the level. then I got the axle level using the level. I then used all-thread to aid in getting my widths down to a 1/32 nds of a inch of each other. then I used a tape measure and measured all different angles and lengths.(measure the center of the left rear eye hole of the spring to the front right eye hole of the shackle mount and vise versa) Use standard locations on the frame to locate the axle under the rig and all measerments are equal within 1/32 nds of an inch.

Here is an example of what I did during mock up:

And mine rides straight as an arrow on the HWY:smokin:

fuck! that is about to be some work, my idea was to just slap teh springs on and where the eyes of the leaf springs hit the frame WELD! hahahah:shaking:

Its easy, just take your time and measure about 10 times in each area before tack work. then when all is tacked in place, before doing a final burn in, measure again. It took me 2 solid days of miniscule measuring and tack work before all was perfect. Just take your time and don't rush it.

Like jpfrk said, square the springs to each other and then square them on the frame. Make sure to measure from the rear fixed spring hanger so you are sure the wheelbase will be the same side to side and it will be straight and true. It's not rocket science, the tape measure is your friend!

got done with the yj swap!!! I FAWKIN LOVE IT! i hadben wheeling a fuckin jeep with wooden leafsprings compared to what that shit can do now, a good 2 ft of uptravel and 3ft of dwn, my god i creamed myself. :D, now to put them in the rear and get that fuel cell!!!

question: i set my shackle angles up exactly the sae yet it sags to the left with all the weight of the jeep on it? why is that?anybody know? or is that a measurment error

edit: pictures soon to come o ya and a 50 degree shackle angle is bomb!

I can answer question #2.
You can move your front axle a maximum of 1.5" forward without relocating your steering box or messing with existing steering geometry. Something is better than nothing.

ya man ima go back to the spot me and my friend test our shit out at tomarrow n ill take some more poictures. my shit leans 5 degees on the driver side thouhg im not sure why. dunno if i set the shackle hanger up right so im going to have to see what happens if i decide to hack it off and correct it or not.

ps. if you use yj springs definitly get the 5 pack ones the 4 pack ones are waaaaaay soft for spring over, and ya no shocks next check goes to that plus some sweet shock towers from marlin maybe i like there hoops they got, hella scary to drive thats for sure

edit: narrow track axles are not even that terrible if you get some good suspension.
