I'm swapping in a 14 bolt in my '67 cj and want to keep the 69" width...It looks like I have to do a combination of outboarding and moving the perches in...

How much can I move the perches in without creating too much leverage on the axle tubes?...what is the maximum distance I can outboard or at least a reasonable dimension?.

I pulled out the calculator and one option is to outboard 3 inches and perch in 4.75 inches...or outboard and perch in equal amounts, which is 3.875 inches...??? any ideas?? dimensions??

thanks,
rodney

Which 14 bolts have 69" WMS?

Most non van SRW and the duallys have 67", while the DRW cab and chassi version is 63". Van ones are 70".

Just want to make sure you have the correct info before you do your calcs. (although that really shouldn't matter).

move the perches on the axle and leave the springs where they are. it will not cause a problem. now put it in and take some pic's.

I don't know what he has but mine is 68" exactly. I've measured a million times. It came out of a 2wd flatbed.

Why bother with outboarding? Too much leverage on the axle tues? It's a 14 bolt for God's sake! The axle tubes can handle (and most likely already have in the original truck) more leverage than your Jeep will ever exert on them.

I just welded new perches in the location of my springs. I think it was 27 inchs on center. Directly under the frame, SOA with the stock 1 .75 springs. FLEX's AWESOME. I will add longer 2.5 inch wide springs when I get them, only because I want longer springs.

I used the dually hubs so mine is now 63 wms The center of the tire hits right down the middle of the stock fender flare.

I do think that the stock spring location is too narrow for bushing life, to be very long. (weeks to months at best) that is the second reason I want to switch to 2.5 inch springs (jonny joints )

I do like the narrow patteren though, it allows for much more leverage on the spring.

you're probably right that it's not 69", I didn't really measure it carefully...I figured it was around that dimension...

I have the matching dana 44 front that has 31.5" width from centerline of one perch to the other...what is the best option, narrow or outboard 2 inches?

thanks for the all the input...I've been trying to decide for weeks whether I should shorten the 14b or run full width...

Your Frame should be the same width as mine. I just meassured it and it is 27.5 center to center.

Your simplest mod would be to just weld new perchs on at that point. I belive the you will enjoy the flez you get and the simplicity of this project.

Outboard the front springs to bolt up the front axle as is, weld some perches on the 14 bolt and go beat that bitch! If you want the extra work and want to go really wild, move your gas tank above the floor so you can INBOARD your rear springs and watch that thing flex like a circus side show contortionist

I think the end topic is:

The CJ is a 27.5in center to center spring perch. The 14bolt, 43in?
Sounds really flexy, WOOH.

My d70 was a 40in perch-width, but the CHEEZIE cherokar's are 44in, MAN 27.5in would be SO flexy!!

you have alot of tradeoffs to play with, Id go with the flexy stock width of 27.5, if its not flexy enough or not stable enought then move it, but its so easy to install at the 27.5in.

have fun...
