i got an 88 4runner and now when I give it gas it doesn't go nearly as fast and takes a long time to gain speed. when I idle it cuts off if I don't continue to give it gas and I noticed that the exaust manifold is glowing orange its so hot when I turn it off after driving it. I was think along the lines of a fuel filter or something. Anyone have ideas?

Might take a look inside the catalytic converter, it may be clogged, my '85 4Runner cat was like that.

i had poor power in my '85 and had the enginge check light come on every time i downshifted to a stop, had a feeling it was the cat so one day i just took a grinder to it and cut it off in front of the cat - problem solved:D It didn't have much in the low end department, but more high end and it idled better, and no more engine check light:D now im running a basic cat i got at the exhaust shop and a series 50 muffler, tons of improvement. Cats only last so long:nuke:

Hollow out the cat, that will solve the problem... to check it just disconnect your exaust before the cat and take it for a drive around the block, you will be able to tell just by doing that... ( just don't leave it like that):D
