I am new to Pirate....Just wanted to give some details of my project to see what kind of opinions (and trouble) I could stir up.
I started with a 1973 FJ40...stripped it of everything....left with only the frame and front cab from the dash forward. Dovetailed the frame in the rear to a 21" bumper made out of 2"x4" 1/4 wall rectangular tubing. That's where I am on the build part....but I have accumulated quite a list of parts....here they are:
1) GM 427 Big Block Engine(with installed air pump from a Crane truck to run air brakes / but will be my onboard air)
2) Allison MT650 Auto trans w/ PTO and 8.05:1 Granny box in 1st gear
3) 2.5T Rockwell axles front and rear
4) Divorced NP 205 / Fully Rebuilt
5) 42"x14 IROK as spare
6) Ballistic Fab Brackets to do 4 link in rear
7) Evolution Machine and Fab 1 1/4" Heims for rear 4 link
8) 2" x 1/4" wall DOM Tube for rear llinks
9) All seals and boots to rebuild both Rockwells
10) Hybrid front leafs w/ 6.25" Daystar HD Shackles
11) Ramsey 10,000lb Full Hydro Winch
I plan to do a 4 link in the rear with air shocks and run leafs in the front for now with a 3 or 4 link in the future. I am going to run the engine on propane and do a full hydro steering system with double sided ram from PSC. Brakes will be Ouverson pinion front and rear since this is a trail only vehicle. The granny box gives me 106:1 crawl ratio in 1st gear and low in the Transfer Case. My major design issues right now are how to get a radiator under the hood with that monster motor and air pump, and if air shocks will be enough to hold up the rear. I have a heavy duty scale at the shop and the engine and Transmission weighed in at a little over 1,700lbs. So you can see my concern. I would love some helpul imput form you guys....I'm sure I'm not the first to attempt this sort of project. Thanks.
