I have a 1985 4x4, the PO had a shop put in a used engine, Unknown Year and Mileage .

How can I tell what year and from whence the engine came ( PU or supra).

The valve cover is very angular , not rounded . The place where the 22r llabel is is centered and just about straight up and down.

Serial NUmber as a year guide ???

TIA

There's absolutely no way to tell the difference between a 85-95 block, year of production or original donor. The 81 & 82 blocks use the thinner thrust than 83 & 84's and a slightly different bearing tang location on the mains. 84 and earlier are high decks, 85-95 are low decks. 85-95 will have the knock sensor port tapped, this is non existent on the pre 85's.

Not necessarily. My early '84 22R has a knock sensor on it, but it wasn't hooked up to anything. You can see it just behind the oil filter in this pic:

As long as the sump on the oil pan is in the rear it will work...

KLF is wrong about the sensor. The sensor to the back af the oil filter is an oil pressure switch. It turns on the oil light in the dash when oil pressure disappears and grounds the switch. If the wire is not hooked up, the light will NOT come on unless the wire grounds out.

A knock sensor would not be tapped in to a oil passage anyway. It would be in a coolant passage/cavity because the "knock" resonates through the coolant.

I have an '80 20R sitting here right now with a oil pressure switch behind the filter, as pictured, and an oil pressure sending unit underneath the filter for a guage.

The picture posted is showing a pressure sending switch, not a knock sensor. This port shown was not OEM either, it was tapped after the fact. The comment stands, no knock sensor port = 84 and earlier casting.

Huh. Well sumbitch. That'll teach me to listen to what others are telling me. Somebody told me a long time ago that was the knock sensor, but there was no wire on it 'cause mine was a carbed motor. I should have known to doubt the expert, Tim.

Just went out and took a closer look, yes it's in an oil passage. I also had the full SR5 gauges on my truck, with the sender under the filter (removed in this pic. look for the little piece of blue rag stuffed in the hole). Then I went and looked at my '87 EFI truck, the knock sensor is higher up, almost in-line with the freeze plugs.

Thanks for straightening me out, guys.
