in the ford section i got a slow buildup goin, i picked up a 8 lug 44, the BOM shows its for. 1981-85 J10, J20, Wide Track Cherokee

its a low pinion but ig ot it for $20. now it has the low ratio carrier (3.73's in it now) so i need to get a high ratio one.

now the real question. what other 44's can i grab a carrier/gears outof? will any year 44 work as long as it isnt revers cut? i know some fords came with 4.09's in them and im wondering if that will be a high ratio carrier. got lots of 44's in our local yard and im sure i can find alot of good parts.

anything should work as long as it is a low pinion also, the dana 44 is same diff as any dana 44.

I bought a new carrier for 100 bucks for my dana 60. Just have to swap the gears over. I am not sure what your cut off is for the carrier break, but depending on what gear size you want go with what you need, I also found a couple of deals on ebay and im sure youll find more for the d44.

but im on a real tight budget here and if i can find a decent carrier at the junkyard im grabbin it. what about the d44 rear carriers? those are the same aswell right? or are the spline counts different, IIRC the front has 30 spline

EDIT: wow i really need sleep, nevermind about the spline count, dunno why i would think thats in the carrier

I wouldn't know about the spline counts, but if you need to just change the carrier for the break you can always swap the spider gears to the next one. A Carrier is a carrier, just holds the ring gear, but if you swap your spider ones it should work with any dana 44 carrier, I would just take a pic with you to the junk yard of your old one and see what they look like. If it's similar (it will be a little different.) than it should be good, see if you can get a same spline count to save you trouble but if you have trouble finding it, swapping spider gears will work too.
