i just bought one off of e bay for 60 bucks. stainless steel weighs like 2 pounds. strong as hell. you have to to make sure you get the one with the right spine count though. i don't recommend skimping on your steering. my .02 cents.

the spline shaft on the gear box has a flat section,,so is the count just the splines that you can actually count or do i have to some how calculate the number of splines it would have if it didn't have that flat spot?

I had to have the junkyard build me one with mismatched parts. I ran into the same thing, but I just needed the steering column.

the shaft should have 36 splines.

This should help. The chart shows 77and earlier gm 800 boxes uses a 36 spline count and all later 800 boxes use a 30 spline.

I had a problem with my steering arm when I put the 89 body on the 76 frame. I had to find a way to mate the 76 steering gear to the 89 steering arm. I bought a collapseable shaft off ebay (about $15.00) designed for frontwheel car of some type and used it to make the connection from the column to the steering gear. It looks like a borgesson unit and works nice. I can take a pic and post if you want. I have not tested it on the trails yet but it works great on the street.
