: Tons and 33's....Will I hate life?
TBItoy 09-27-2008, 11:19 AM :laughing:So here's the deal...
I'm about to SAS my 4Runner. I've wheeled all over the SE in it over the past 2 years, and monst rides it's been on it was by far the smallest in the group. (everyone else on rocks and 44+...:smokin:) )

It was aussie locked in the front, welded in the rear, dual case'd.
I have broken:
9 cv shafts
3 inner shafts
3 steering links
1 hub
and I finally broke the front diff.
I run 285/75R16 Trxus MTs. I want to swap in a 60 front and what ever rear matches.
I'm thinking of running my current tires on some stock Chevy 2500 HD steel wheels too keep the Runner from being so wide. I figure I'll be able to hold it on the rev limiter as long as I like with 33's and tons, but I'm not sure if the decrease in g/c would be so ridiculous that trail riding would suck.
bbagwell 09-27-2008, 12:03 PM One ton rear ends are so damn huge, seems like 33's will make it hang up a lot.
cj8scrambld 09-27-2008, 12:27 PM A D60 or D70 (D70U would be even better....smooth bottom) would offer more GC than say a 14FF. Question is, what are your plans....larger tires or staying with the build as it is now. The tons and 33" would be "similar" to most stock 1 ton trucks out there.....that ran a 235/85/16 tire.....within a 1/2" radius anyway.
TBItoy 09-27-2008, 01:21 PM Well the Runner is my "lite wheeler", I DD it a lot too. I'll likely stick with the 22re and dual cases.
I have a Toy truggy to do the serious stuff (it was v8/built toy axles/39.5"s now its getting Rockwells and 42s)
netwt12 09-27-2008, 01:31 PM swap in the built toy front from the truggy into the 4runner. it's just that simple.
TBItoy 09-27-2008, 05:48 PM I would swap the built axles... but here is the problem

something is missing! :D
when the housing broke it killed the long side longfield shaft. I guess I could build up another toy axle, but i was really wanting to avoid that, since I couldn't make front ring and pinons last for more than a few rides.
run the d60 front and get a ford d70u from 83-85. they are only 65 inches wide and smooth on the bottom. cheap too
Big91RustyBucket 09-27-2008, 07:04 PM Have fun with ton's on 33's... Can you say Rock anchors...?
NetBSD 09-27-2008, 07:09 PM im in the same boat, swapping out my stock b2 axles for a 44/FF60 and my b2 is small, only 31's but im sick of snapping shafts. from what ive seen yer best bet would be 35's just for the clearance. im gunna run my 31's for a few days to see what happens tho
TBItoy 09-27-2008, 07:28 PM One thing is, I'm trying to avoid the cost of regearing right now. I can find tons with 4.10s and 4.56s pretty easy. So w/ the squirrel power I can run run the 33s.
Hell I guess I'll run the 285s then maybe try to regear them later....
woodchuck2 09-28-2008, 06:16 PM IMO if you are going to 1 tons then go with a bigger tire to at least keep you ground clearance. That axle/tire combo would be good for plowing rocks i guess.
cj5.5 09-29-2008, 10:30 AM If you honestly stick to light wheeling, and 33s, I say go d44.
My d60 ft is a friggin' stump magnet with 38s.
GreyZuk 09-29-2008, 06:12 PM seriously? I would think that a toyota sollid axle with Bobbly Longs, and 6 bolt knuckles, would handle any abuse 33's could EVER throw at it...
TBItoy 12-05-2008, 12:36 AM seriously? I would think that a toyota sollid axle with Bobbly Longs, and 6 bolt knuckles, would handle any abuse 33's could EVER throw at it...
Yep, and that cost SERIOUS $ to build too... and rebuild...and swap housings...and rebuild
I'm still workin on gettin some tons:evil:
MX489 12-05-2008, 08:53 AM you can always shave the 14blt and make it a 13blt, otheriwse ya it'll be an anchor
TBItoy 12-06-2008, 07:30 PM 10-bolt chevy has been narrowed 4-inches on long side it will bolt up to stock jeep leafsprings has 4.56 lockrite locker chromoly inner & outter axles & superjoints by yukon warn lockouts 6lug
Guy local to me has this^^^ And I have a 4.56 Toy rear end. Now I'm considering using this... Its a bit wider and has a stronger housing than a toy axle.
RockToy94 12-07-2008, 08:43 AM Just get the tons, shave them and see what happens. If they suck and get hung up on everything then Im sure someone would snag them up real quick.
crashhawk 12-07-2008, 11:24 AM x2, or I'm not too far away with a couple sets of cheap 44s. (Check my sig)
I'll go back to the binder forum and quit pimpin' my stuff now.
