: Recommended trucks?
Dromlace 09-27-2008, 07:51 PM Revised this.
NO Dodges
Domestic manufacturers
For mud riding, looking to lift 4-5 inches and put some 38s.
Not really interested in older trucks because I really don't want to work on engines.
I'm not the most suspension savvy, I really just want a vehicle I can purchase a lift kit for, and install that.
If I had the money to stick into them, I would definitely get a older ford, but as I said, I don't want to do engine work.
*I'm in a really lazy state right now, but if I could get a good deal, I probably will get something a bit older.
Looked at:
1997-2003 Ford F150s
1991-1999 CK or Silverado Chevrolets
Yukons/Tahoes
GMCTruxrule 09-27-2008, 10:53 PM For what its worth, older trucks have arguably better parts.
Solid front axles are a big thing.
Newer trucks, Ford F150 will have IFS. the 250 and 350s will have a SFA.
Dodge had a solid front axle in their half tons up through the late 90s.
GM quit using the solid front in 92. On everything.
So, my next bit of advice would be to figure out what your needs for a truck are and then select something that has quality durable parts, that are cheap and easy to find.
Anything with IFS will break when used with big tires and lifts offroad.
Mental note to self ^^^^^
Dromlace 09-28-2008, 09:15 AM Ok. Main plan is mud riding so probably a 4" lift with some 37s.
woodchuck2 09-28-2008, 06:12 PM Hmmm, alot of choice there are. 79 Ford has very strong D-44 with 9" rear, very strong trannies and transfer cases. Swapping engines can be a nightmare if you dont know Fords. GM has good engines, trannies, transfers, the D-44 and 10 bolts. Swapping in 1 ton axles is easier than Ford and more available, IMO the standard cut gears are not as strong as Fords HP design though. GM also thanged the front drop location through the years so swapping trannies/transfers will let you run almost any axle in the front. GM TBI is far easier to work on and is very dependable as compared to the Ford. I would go by you wallet, availability of parts in your area and of course your machanical ability.

Combining this with your first post the only thing I would recomend would be a '93-'96 Ford F-150, Bronco or F-250. The Chevy IFS isn't the greatest for strength stock and once modified will eat parts (idler arms, pitman arms, CV axles, etc....) rapidly, especially if used hard. The TTB Ford isn't the strongest thing out there, but it can easily handle what you are planning to use it for.
360trails 09-28-2008, 06:58 PM For 4k youre unlikly to find anything thats reliable if your lookin for domestic, not just because i own a toyota im saying this, but its the truth, look into some foreign wheels.
They are cheap, parts are everywhere, toyotas and nissans are very reliable too, and they are light, less likely to get stuck. Smaller and more narrow wheel base, fit in tighter places,
Ive owned three f150s, one f250, sierra with a lt1, pathfinder, a tricked 5.0, z28, supra, and a 4runner.
By far my favorite is the 4runner, 2nd by the pathfinder. I bought my 4runner for $800, and have put it through so much shit, not a single problem.
I understand favoring domestic, but the reality is a foreign is a great option.
Just somthing to think about

I'm fine with foreign automotive areas, but trucks are one things domestics have a long held firm position in.
MochaMike 09-28-2008, 08:04 PM This is newbie, so I'll be nice.
People frown (won't help), when you post duplicate posts.
Especially when you've been here 1-2 days.
Delete one of your threads and next time spend some time searching before you post. There is lots of good info on the this site... (just don't expect it to be spoon fed to you... if you do, you'll be fed to the wolves).
trkklr77 09-28-2008, 08:09 PM dude, get the fuck out here.

Sorry about the two post. I'll use the search function now, cause when I first came here I wasn't registered and it wasn't on the little toolbar. I don't expect to be spoon fed, I just want opinions. Thanks though.
dude, get the fuck out here.
Get the dick out of your ass.
I can't in good conscious recommend anything IFS for 37's or 38's, even in mud, and the suspension lift is going to be VERY expensive. GM IFS is "somewhat" okay with narrow 34's or 35's, forget about fat tires (you don't want 'em anyway). Maybe a reg-cab, shortbed (the lighter the truck, the easier it'll be on parts) 350 truck from the mid-late 90's with Q78's or 35X10.50's.
And you should ditch any goofy ideas you hear about Toyotas & such as an engine swap will be ABSOLUTELY mandatory to have any fun whatsoever in mud.
I know you're not big on "working" on older engines, but you can buy a brand new GM V8 from intake to pan for not a lot of money. And if you're buying a cheap, older truck, it's your safety net should the engine you get WITH the truck crap out on you. Consider going to an older truck.
