: Why I hate this board
BillaVista 05-17-2001, 08:29 AM Admittedly it’s an inflammatory title, designed to attract the maximum readership…please bear with me.
It’s because of the unrealized potential; the dream of what it could be but just isn’t quite.
When I first joined the board, a short while ago, the first 2 posts I read where about Coby’s wristed arms, and Jesse’s super U-joint project. Goddamn, I thought I’d found Nirvana – this was seriously good hardcore tech.
But over time I began to realize there is a huge amount of posing, flaming, bullshit, and self-aggrandizing chest thumping - a lot of it accomplished with some really juvenile Ebonics and such.
The problem is, you have to filter out so much BS just to get the meat, and it's very tiring.
Take a look - there are sooooo many postings of supposedly "badass" rigs sitting in driveways. No tech info, no details, not interesting at all....just transparent trolling for compliments...and usually the masses are only happy to oblige with pages of "that is sick shit" and "your rig is the crack pipe man" - WTF does that mean???
And how it seems many have taken the idea of "I will be frank and state my opinions" which is an admirable thing...and interpreted as “ I will be immature, juvenile insensitive, and basically be just a social hand grenade because I'm an asshole and I'll hind behind the "tough guy" reputation of the board”. Anyone who tries to respond with maturity and common sense will be accused of wearing panties. All very funny and entertaining, but hardly any use technically.
It has its place and seems to be very popular, but I fear I don't have the time for all the “filler”. I want hardcore tech and I want it all the time. Where people can discuss design principles, suitability of materials, interchange of parts, the relative merits of 1020 DOM versus 4131 tubing, and whether heat treating is necessary. Where people swap technical details of swaps and fabs and projects and what fits what….without the attachment of ego and self-worth.
I dream of a place where if a fella teaches you something, even if it’s in a blunt manner, you act like a man and thank him. Where people are secure enough to admit mistakes and learn from one-another without going into juvenile temper tantrums and name calling.
And where there is NO PLACE for racism or other discrimination, regardless of how well “justified” the author may feel. Where profanity is kept to a minimum and is used as effective emphasis and not as a replacement for effective communication.
I was thinking perhaps of a Yahoo Egroup, where members could read posts on-line or send/receive them via e-mail whichever they prefer.
In summary…no I don’t hate this board , it’s fine for what it is, but it doesn’t suit my needs perfectly, so I thought I would canvass for interest in something else. Namely, a group exclusively for technical minded fabricators and the like, with no chit chat, no discussion of events, no pointless bragging and flaming, where no one gives a damn what kind of "rig" you drivem but just in how you built it and why and what you learned, and where a person is judged by the content, not number, of his posts.
Any interest or should I just un-knot my panties and fuck off?
The Jerk 05-17-2001, 08:34 AM this will be short and simple. if its seriousness that your looking for then we'd all be wearing suits and ties while wheeling. there is all kinds of knowledge here, you just have to ask for it if you cant find it! jiMMy

I sure wouldn't go that far <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> However, this board has evolved into what it is. Good or bad take it or leave it, this is it. You can start your dream board, and police it as you wish, for free at www.ezboards.com. (http://www.ezboards.com.) Good luck. And when you get it started let everyone know.

I love good hard tech info just as much as you. I also enjoy the humor and the personalities found on this board. We are all just big kids playing with our toys. From this post I take it that you are strictly business on the trail and don’t horse around with the people you wheel with. This is a hobby enjoy it. This might help

welcome to my hell. i agree for the most part. that is pretty much how the board was but as we have grown so has the # of clowns who dilute the amount of true tech, however the knowledge is still out there it just get presented with more flavor. i belive we are still at the fore front of hard core wheeling and i will contine to work hard at keeping us there. if you have any suggestions for me as how to keep us hard core please let me know.

Hmmm I remember having debates and discussions about these very topics, and recently too.
I'd hate to see how perfect (and dull) your life is that you have no ROOM for the "Filler" material we all like to call having a good time. IE: entertainment; ever heard of it???

LMAO. That's called hitting the nail on the head. I'm afraid the answer is probably YES!
I take your point. And I wan't to qualify. I don;t mean Pirates; should be abolished. It IS fun, for the reasons you stated, and it IS tremendously popular, and it must take great effort (well done moderators).
It;s just that I am dry and crass and far to serious, and, really, it's a time thing. When you need good quick technical advice without the "fun" and you have little time...where do you go? I was just wondering if there would be interest in something "supplemental" to Pirates.
I guess maybe I'm asking if there are other dry, crass 3 piece suit wearing wheelers looking for tech info? <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

MattS 05-17-2001, 09:18 AM I have to agree with you 100%. Don't get me wrong I have had TONS of fun with all the BS on the board and also learned alot. But for the last 6 months I have been working 60 hour weeks, trying to get my truck finish, bought a house and the general crap. I'm pretty busy, just don't have time for all the "fluff".
The search function is where is it at!! It works real well. I use it all the time. But what we really need is a tech section that is not just a step by step how to do something like what we have. It could be another forum that really good tech threads get moved to. Camo had an awesome post on the ram assist steering. It will be MIA in 2 weeks. But if it got moved to a slower tech only forum it would be there for everyone to see.
That's my idea. Search on!!
maybe take a little time out of your busy life style and try to enjoy some web wheeling. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
matt that is a good idea. let me talk to the boss about it.
Whitewater 05-17-2001, 09:26 AM Bella, I agree with you on many points, the boards are split up into categories in an attempt to accomplish several of your points, it works OK. There are many people here to screw around and many people here to find tech info. I personally am here for both, it makes the day a little more interesting. When I first started surfing this site 4 or 5 years ago, it was more or less a bunch of locals and people that knew each other. It was almost exclusively tech and wheeling related as time has passed it's become much larger and now has a draw from several different coutries. A large part of this is due to the comedy and character that has naturally developed, for better or worse is just a matter of opinion. In general I'd like to say that this is the best BBS I've ever found on the net hands down! If you like it, stay and participate, if you don't then go
I think the board for pure tech is out there. It's a specific board. This particular board is General 4x4. It's gonna cover trail rides, pics of trucks and the other. The the "tech", I think the specific boards cover that. Like the Chevy, Jeep, Ford sections etc...
I own a Blazer and a Cherokee, and I read the Land Cruiser Board. Lots of GOOD HARD CORE TECH in all those sections without alot of the filler. If you think this board is watered down now, you should have seen it before they made General Chit Chat. Now THAT was watered down. Sure, I don't have a lot of time to spend sifting through some of the shit posts, I try and take about 30 min. one day and go through about the last 3 pages of posts looking for topics that might interest me. Then if I've got time I read em, if not, I come back when I do.
BTW, Unknot yer panties and FUCK OFF!!! <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> j/k
Brandon 05-17-2001, 09:40 AM hey you hypocritical moron - practice what you preach THIS IS NOT TECHNICAL MOVE IT TO THE CHIT CHAT SECTION!!
I have been on one particular Toyota mailing list for going on 5 years now. I can honestly say we have covered just about every possible technical issue even remotely related to Toyota 4x4's at least 27 times already.
Tech is good. But if you hang around long enough, PURE tech gets old FAST...

i agree, most here know are stuff and are VERY stressed a lot and like to fool around, but the tech info is always there, as for posting specs of our rigs, check the members section, that is why it is there, no one really wants to type it all out again and again eveytime we make a post
on a rather meaner note, if you want all tech andno fun, by a book, those have a wealth of info in them and are really boring to read

KrustyKruiser 05-17-2001, 10:02 AM Having hung around this board for a few years now, and probably being one of the more, er, mature members, I can tell you this board represents the cross-section of society (wow, deep, man!). I would'nt change a thing. Yeah, there's some juvenile crap going on, but there is also a lot of great humor, quality information, and camraderie. If you are purely into all the serious tech talk, then I guess it aint here. What blows me away reading this board is the total pearls of wisdom, inginuity, and knowledge out there. Way better than reading ANY 4 wheeling magazine. Having read those things all you get is the "flavor of the month" or who is buying the most advertising space! They are full of mis-information, half truths, and yes, even juvenile attitude. If you want to hang out with the real people of this sport/hobby hang out here. Sorry if we cant all be technophiles spewing all the engineering data of NASA, but some of us are here for the fun element also, and so I say "Suck it up, Bill, and dont be a party pooper!" <IMG SRC="smilies/maggie.gif" border="0">

I asked questions that probably were asked 20 times before and some that weren't. Search button is good for saving time. RCKRATZ 05-17-2001, 12:00 PM just my .02 on this...... this bulletin board is, as everything else, what you make of it. I have yet to see very many technical questions that could not be answered by someone on this board. Yes there is alot of bullshit, but that is the fun of it. If all you want is tech. then just do searches on this board and the rest of the internet and im sure you'll find what you need. I find the information about trail closures and trail rides to be of great help. By the way without all the trail closure info. you could take all your tech info and wheel it all over the highway. <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">
CaptainFleXJ151 05-17-2001, 12:18 PM I'm with Bill. He's right about how we need to worry less about how old someone is(clearing my throat), or how big a tires they have. And more about how well they can build something.

Not everyone who wheels is 100% serious all the time so yea we all play around. its a thing called humor!

However, even if you get a hardcore technical-stuff-only discussion, eventually there will be some camaraderie (sp?) built up, and with it, some good natured ribbing. Which is exactly why this is my favorite virtual places to hang out.
I consider many of the folks here friends, though I've only met maybe 10. Hell, I've never met Lance or Schly, and they just sent me a combined $3250 in cashiers checks. I mean, I could disappear and they'd be hosed. (Note guys, I'm not disappearing <IMG SRC="smilies/innocent.gif" border="0"> )

XJJack 05-17-2001, 02:39 PM Well said David, the Tech stuff does seem to repeat it self into the ground. I love to read about breaktheough ideas that take us to the next level, but it does get a little boring reinventing the wheel every month.
Del taco 05-17-2001, 02:41 PM IMHO, this is a pretty strange thread.
I mean in the big picture what is your purpose?
Do you have illusions of this topic changing the flavor of this board?
Are you expecting us ALL to read that post and say:" damn, ya know, maybe if...."
sorry bud, not gunna happen.

There is a division here at this board that was set up to keep the tech from getting lost..
It is working.
if you cant see that thats your problem.

ps. the hacked up 4runnah with the silver paint job IS "the crack pipe".
if perhaps you cannot understand the ironic twist to the humor of calling something good "the crack pipe" then I think you lack some creative thinking abilites.
Wich inturn explains your lack of flexibility in seeing the difference between what this board is and what you would like it to be.
how long have you been here?
where do you get off foisting your opinions about what this board SHOULD be on us?

Brandon was right on, why is this thread on the "general" forum?
is it your way of running and whining to the people who you think will give you ear?

BillaVista 05-17-2001, 03:33 PM I'm going to reply to this one with the vigor that is so admirably practised and defended here.
I mean in the big picture what is your purpose?
Do you have illusions of this topic changing the flavor of this board?
Can you read?????
I think I stated quite clearly. I have no illusions whatsoever of influincing the flavour of the board, as someone rather eloquently put it...it has "evolved" to what it is. I was just wondering if anyone shared any of my opinions, vis a vis, would it be worth the effort to setup a new "tech only, strictly patroled" discussion form of some kind.
Most people understood this, and hev replied in the negative, suggesting instead that i lighten the fuck up. I have taken this to hart, and on self reflection have to agree with them, and thanks them. Epecially the fellow who posted the definition of a hobby...that was great.
where do you get off foisting your opinions about what this board SHOULD be on us?
Again....you read it wrong. No intent to change THIS board, it is what it is.....you know, I JUST explained this in the above paragraph....sometimes you gotta wonder if you have to repeat it several times... maybe they're just not going to get it.
how long have you been here?
Oh what...am I dissin yo house...wazzup (see I watch TV too!)
Brandon was right on, why is this thread on the "general" forum?
Uhhh..coz I felt it was of a "general" nature???
is it your way of running and whining to the people who you think will give you ear?
noooooo. It's my way of elliciting theopinion of others, presuably the motivation of anyone who posts comments in a public forum. Seems to have workedquite well too (slaps self on back)
If you don't like it <IMG SRC="smilies/flipoff.gif" border="0">

Del taco 05-17-2001, 04:09 PM aaah.
ya got me.
I walked right into that one.
-NO i didnot pour over your post.
-YES every body had very good things to add or point out. Im glad you made note of some of the more poignant items.
-and admittedly your dream is a valid one and DEEP down inside in sure all of us wished for a place like that on occasion.
Checking out your website shows this is how you do things.
Its your website, a creation all your own and it reflects your views of the world...
very useful.
but the whole "world view" thing comes into play here and thats the rub about you for me.
This subtle desire for things to be orderly and the way you think they should be is present in the text of your website...
alot of us have been around log enuff to see that a pure tech site does not and cannot exist if the chance for dialouge exists beteewn the users...we are all human and our dendencies to bend, warp, twist, misrepresent, and create fact will always be there. If precision and accuracy is what you crave, let me know when you find it.
I've seen a few big moves where people have had enuff and moved on, from site to site, why hasnt that happened here, I dont know, maybe its not as bad as you think, maybe theres actually a balance that has been struck here, maybe some of us have figured out to take the crap with the info, or maybe we like each other here and really know who is info and who is hot air.
Whats wrong with Mailing lists?
any Mailing list ive ever subscribed to were typically very clean and linear exchanges of info.
yadda yadda yadda...
bottom line is; sure, this place could be more (some of the best and brightest hang here)..
((this place could be a whole lot less too))
..so if the quest for "pure tech" is what youre after, and you feel these "bright people" are being lost amongst the cattle..
then ask yourself;
"why are they letting it be so?"
"Am i missing something here?...why are they here when Pure Tech is the way it should be?"

JohnC 05-17-2001, 05:37 PM Bill, I completely agree with you - almost. I wish there was less filler / junk mail, but I wouldn't want the site to lose it's flavor or personality. The people on this site have the potential to make it the best tech site there is. It's hard these days to ask a decent tech question without getting half a dozen smart ass answers.
Arrow 05-17-2001, 05:56 PM Well you've(all of us) got to admit the board is very different now than even a year ago.
But as Slick says just skip some peoples posts or whole topics completely.
I've been here longer than most but hardly anyone will recognize me but I just don't post unless I can contribute or pose a question.
Overall this is probably still the best bbs going.
I also don't wheel hardcore but this bbs has been of more wealth than any other single resource.

Bill,
After reading this entire tread, Which would have been lost had it not been for the SEARCH.
I would like to let you know what the BB was like when I started reading it Years ago.
It was one long post.
--- With lots of
------- Intented
-------------Bull
---------------- And lots
---------------------Of
---------------------------Space taken
--------------------------------Up while
-----------------------------------scrolling
----------------------------------------across
the page.
It had only a few regulars and by reading all their Bull Shit I could formulate weather or not they knew what they were talking about. or if they were all full of bull.
years ago I realized that it takes all kinds.
Granted the BB has filled up with youngsters.
(not juveniles) Just people that are into the sport and happen to be young.
Ie: Jimmy.
But I value his opinion more than most.
He might be a youngster/He might not.
But he knows what he is talking bout.
He (and I hope you relize I am not singleing jimmy out) knows where the BS should be and shouldn't be.
I have never regularly posted on JU. I have read enough on JU to realze that most on JU dont have as much a clue as I do.
There fore I feel the BB is fine.
Not saying I have a clue. But Where else can someone ask ..
Should I take my next wheeling trip to NM or CO? It sure is nice to know people that have been to both.
Basicly, you have a point. But I disagree.
Jaffer 09-28-2001, 06:12 AM I liken my off-road forum history to a journey ... looking at the various "cities" and plotting my course to suit my needs as I grow and learn.
At first I was confortable at PM's as I could learn the most there at my stage of learning and building, starting with the basics. Always, I peeked in and monitered the 'other boards' to glean info for what was next in my learning evolution. At that time the POR board was way too over my head so after absorbing just about everything there was to learn on PM's (you can tell when to move on when you start doing mainly answering and little asking) I moved on to the then new ORC SWB board. There's a great bunch of knowledgeable folks there and it feels a comfortable as and old shoe to visit.
Along the way I wrote a couple of popular tech articles and documenten my build up so others would benefit to pay back and add to knowledge for others.
Now, after having my rig almost built up as far as she can go without major structural and mechanical renovations, again it's about time to move up the evolutionary latter and venture into 'the dark side'. Good timing too since the ORC is starting to look more like a prayer meeting, joke board and gossip column.
<IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">
I've lurked around here long enough to know and keep my trap shut most the time for the past year now and if there is a better hard core tech site out there I've never seen it.
So if you guys will put up with me I'll be more than happy and grateful to put up with all that comes with hanging out here ...
mudlite 09-28-2001, 06:50 AM I will agree to disagree. There is alot of fluff in here, but thats what makes alot of people happy. There is alot of pics, and chest pounding, also liked. Maybe what it needs is a technical section, a picture section or posts that are more discriptive than " Ya gotta see this!!!!"
My only other beaf is jumping on the " Newbie" . Maybe some tolerance should be given to the newbie, explainations on " fawkin" and the proper use of faces...etc. Because you tend to mould the newbie into a something you don't like. Or scare them away.
I know you can't keep everyone happy, or make us all friends, but it is an open forum, and everyone has there opinion. No need for getting bitchy. Don't forget, you can't get the real feel, or tone from reading an e-mail. It is usually read in the mood you are in. Jokes sometimes get out of hand.
Anyways, enough of that, this forum does have alot to offer from many experienced wheelers, and sometimes you have to take the bad with the good.
Big Rich 09-28-2001, 07:01 AM There is a board out there for you......and it's been named here in this post. You can find out which radio antenne is better or which wheel polish to use, or even more tech, which oil filter is better. by the way, I pefer wix......Hope you enjoy wheeling more than surf'n, if not try bowling, I understand it's pretty tech...

<IMG SRC="smilies/usa.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/usa.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/usa.gif" border="0">
All the times I have been wheeling, the atmosphere has been much like the PBB. Guys giving each other tons of sh1t, everyone is helpfull if you have a valid question/problem, and you will get more sh1t if the question is junk...It's up to the person and the receiving end of the question to determine if it is crap or not. Unless they are a pay-to-play guy, most people just try the mod, or fab....It's hard to find anyone that is going to hold your hand, online, through "hard core mods"...Find out what you can, then do the shit. If you really want to learn about "hardcore tech" find a guy that knows his sh1t, and see if he can help you out, fellow wheelers will do alot for beer. Then it'll be up to help someone else out.
Just reading tech acrticles won't allow anyone to jump in and perform a Vortec 5.7 swap in a YJ...just get out a do it.
Damn are you an Actuary, or someting??? This place is funny, deal with it <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

The last line gave me a grin... you know how to reel it back, then you know how to deliver a smacker. Nicely done. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
I'd check an exclusively tech forum like you describe. Hell, I'd event host it at 4x4Wire, but I think it would be cool if POR4x4 created a new tech forum. The thing is, I have yet to see such a Forum really work well. The old ORC Jeep Tech forum had promise, but it has since cratered. <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0"> The various vehicle-specific sections are better, but I would rather see a GENERAL TECH section... since most of us are using truck parts, regardless of the brand of vehicle they go into or come out of...
I enjoy the tech, and yeah, the BS does get in the way of it from time to time... but usually, it is worth slogging through. You learn quickly to skim, and sometime even skip posts from a bunch of people.
Popularity has its own costs, eh? Yeah, the tech is badly diluted, and the signal-to-noise ratio is at an all-time low, but there are still good nuggets of tech well worth sifting through...

well Ok
who cares What other People say I am sorry you feel the BB is not good Shait!!! But there Are no return's !!!!!!! Wait Hear Me Out !!!!!
I think there is alot of good Amount of Tech Jargin in this Forum I Agree With Alot of People and Like some Have already said !
I stay away from those that iritate Me!!!!! Critical Dick heads that read to much into Something,
They Can dish it out but Can't dish it In! Alot of the tech Stuff happens Behind the scene's PM, E-mail's, I think?????
I know Because I get Alot of these And Some Job's outa them! I like to help Someone out if I understand Something they need help On !!!!! Or can Do because they are to Busy
Kinda more true If it's One On One getting technical Info,,, that is from my opinion
Why Do you Ask about only Tech Talk ????
Somtimes I Enjoy the Camo's,,, but not the Camo Wanna Be's ,,,DRM's ,,,And not the DRM Try to Be's
Not To Metion the Million Other 's But these seem to Stick out Or even Some of the Other Trouble maker's but Hey its All in good Fun!!
Take It with a grain out salt
I look at some Of these rigs and Can tell if I can get good info !! if they Have All pro this Or All pro That,,,, Dynatrac this and That Or A Currie Jeep!!!! Spring Over,,, Spring Under ,,,Manufactured steering Component's or Enough Adavanced Adapter Shait to make you head Spin!!!
Ok I have An Atlas And Adapter But ! I made My Own Chevy to Ford Bellhousing And I got the Atlas For Cheap!
But Most of All I use the Trial And Error Routine ! Seem's to Work For me
I feel Most of the Tech Should Come from Friend's Or Buddy in Some Close group Assioated By on regular basis!! this Make's it easier if you have??? About Something you can call them! or have them Come Over!
But Idea's Can be used From forums Like this One to Build or Create new parts To break !!!!
I under Stand What you mean about the <IMG SRC="smilies/rainbow.gif" border="0"> comment's,,,,, And that you Are Measured By you'r Post's when Some people Just sit at desk All day And post Shiat Clueless!!!!!!!!!!
And they Are Zeus Of the Sluice And Don't own A four Wheel drive!!!! WTF!!!!!!
To Let You Know I will Be working On Projects All Weekend and will Not post After Today!!! this is Why I don't have All that many! Post's
And then they call you Newbie This Is Ironic and Somtimes it get's to me!!!!!!!!!
but I just Ig It!!!! And Move On!!!!!!
Lately I have Ventured out of the For sale Wanted And other tech info Gen info And Jeep And even Toyota Pages becuase I am Bored At work Pretty Slow right Now
And Let me tell yo there Are some Dumb Shait Going On! !!!!
I will add More Later But I have To Finish My Home Brew Hydaulic Setup on Mine And Do A 4.3 Motor Swap For a guy and Finish rebuilding a tranny for Another Guy!!!!
So I Better Go!!!!!!!
Billa Vista I have read Some Of you'r Post's And You have Good Info And Good Opinion'sBut mostOf the time People Don't Care The and WantA 2word Answer Like fixthis And You'r problem's will be Solved
Anyways Good
luck finding that Forum????
My .02 cents

Well that just about sumd up this entire tread in one little post.
Now get back to fabin something. Break out the welder and step away from the computer. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> j/k
You are correct sir. About some guys knowing more via computer than the action that they take on the trail. I for one have seen this up close. (I will not say the screne name to protect him/her/them) but your point is well taken, I thought from what I heard on this bb that (they) were well rounded off roaders. and much to my suprise they were total rookies. only had been out like maybee a total of 4 times. And all 4 were just mud.
Then I assumed that they were hardcore, and take them to a tough trail only to find out they are clueless. (no offense to them) just the truth.
It made for a difficult trip. Cause one of them flopped. <IMG SRC="smilies/jeep1.gif" border="0">
MattS 09-28-2001, 10:45 AM Not true. I bought my truck and have done everything to it because of the PBB. I wear a tie everyday. I have bought thousands of $$ worth of tools ranging from wrenches to my MIG. If you don't try you will never know if you can or can't do it. Now I know I can.
My swap is not one of the easier ones by far.

Dude, you gotta chill, get it? I too work in a white collar professional position as a senior manager for a financial company, and I yes I do put on a suit some of the time. But you can't take life too serious, shit I can't count how many times I have used a car reference to describe a technical problem, or sat in a senior level meeting with grease under my finger nails.
You want dry, technical no humor, move over to mailing lists, at Digest.net, it does not get anymore dry and technical than that. A true tech section would be a nice to have, but the board is broken up into specific areas, I spend most of my time here or on the IH board. On the IH board I can ask some very specific questions about IH's. Here I can throw a Q up about DOM tubing. I do feel for you Heep guys, the Heep board is a little out of hand, and requires some work to find the tech nuggets, but they are there.
So quite your bitch'n, and shit or get off the pot. <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0">

We are getting at the same point, this is helpfull(the PBB), but the net can not even come close to what a guy will learn by jumping in to a project. Just like my Advisor said in college "You will learn more in two weeks of being in industry, than I can teach you in 2 years of classes."

hmm very good point.......
MCFLY4X4 09-28-2001, 09:12 PM the way i can justify the bs and fluff is that it brings an element of indivigual (spelling?) personality to the boards, which is nice because i get to know people better. i'm lucky to have met quite a few people from the boards in person and being able to keep in touch with them in an informal manner such as on the boards is the next best thing to wheeling with them. and for us lazy people it kills two birds with one stone, we get the 4x4 tech and whatnot with out having to write e-mail <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> is this a valid point?

abnormaltoy 04-02-2006, 09:22 PM My thoughts on this are;
1. There is a ton of info on this board that is almost priceless. Not only the engineer level stuff but also the day to day what works and what doesn’t stuff.
2. There is and equal amount of snobbery on here and that’s unfortunate. I get the feeling that t here are some who feel if you’re not linked and coiled, you can’t possibly be serious about wheeling. Not everything has to be (IMHO) full on competition rigs.
3. 4x4 means just that…yes even IFS has validity in certain types of driving.
4. I think there are some on the board whose only joy in life is blasting someone's ass because…they did something “wrong”. I don’t post a whole lot on this or any of the other boards I belong to because unless I can add something of value to the conversation…I stay out. It does get frustrating answering the same old questions time and time again, but everyone has to learn somewhere. If a guy makes a “mistake” one person can do the correcting…every pecker head in the county doesn’t have to pile on.
5. People forget….this shit is supposed to be fun!

hbar314 04-02-2006, 10:06 PM I have to agree with you 100%.
Search on!!
I think I would like a almost pure technical section or something like that. We could make it slower by only allowing stars to post in it and being read-only for everyone else.
I'm an engineer by trade and have been rigless for going on 6months now. I continue to swing by and read this board because I love the rare thread that gets really technical. Almost always they get shut down by some backwoods folks yelling that, "theory is great but what have you built?".
I would love a section that we could debate the finier points of ti vs al (4x4 related or other) or any other wonderfully technical stuff.
Maybe the key would be a zero tolerance policy on bs.
Well, I sure as hell need to start paying attention to the dates.

A good sig
aaron t 04-02-2006, 11:14 PM My thoughts on this are;

EDIT...I guess there's nothing like ranting about a 5 year old topic!
hey bro, what part of tucson are you in? good to see another local pirate :flipoff2:
DiscoDino 04-02-2006, 11:49 PM I'm frequenting www.offroadfabnet.com but it lacks the beef and people here on PB4x4.
I'd like to subscribe to such an E Group if it comes through.
JoshTurner 04-03-2006, 12:51 AM Camo & Billa I agree with you both in your 1st posts...I didnt read all 4 pages but I will in time..
I think I have always posted good questions in the tech parts of this board...BUT in less than 50% Iv gotten nothing but greif & BS answers...Thanks to you all that have answerd the questions with real info..
YES Id love to pay up the $20 but why when all I,and others get is crap to a point where it just isnt fun???...I have to put up with it to get "SOME" info & hopefuly help others with info I have..
No offence to Camo or any of the Admin, but I personaly would like to see more strict policing & NO favoritism ...Iv been a MOD/Admin for a few chat sites I know how hard it can be...
Yes we need to have fun & joke around with fellow wheelers but theres a time & place for that...Yes the Noobs need to post in the noob section...But hey...Instead of bashing them for not doing it just 1 person direct them to the right section...Same with all the people that arnt rock crawlers...Yes I know what this site was started as & yes it says it on this page but also on the main page it says"EXTREME OFF ROAD"...As this is the biggest off road site there is that I know of I think it should cater to EVERYONE...But hey that not my decision...
Anyways enuff babbiling....Billa Id LOVE to see a site where you can ask a legitamate question & get a legitamate answer...Im a member of the ECBR mailing list & it runs just how you have mentiond & it works great...Just questions & answers & no major BS & NO FIGHTS...
Perhaps pirate could meet your needs better by creating a section where only certain users can create and discuss things. It might be a bitch to code into the system, but the idea would hold the same.
Perhaps a dual section.
1 sub forum for "smart guy only, approved posters creating and discussing things" and another for us mortals with the "thats cool shit" and "panties are in a wade" area.
4x4not 04-03-2006, 12:02 PM I find it amazing how many people blindly read threads and never look at the date!
mudslinger99 04-03-2006, 12:20 PM I find it amazing how many people blindly read threads and never look at the date!
You would think that after this post some of them might catch on
Somebody was bound to post up and not check the dates and it might as well be you  :flipoff2:
Arctic4lo 04-03-2006, 12:40 PM I like the idea of the "pure tech" arena... but aside from the general theory of it, the real-life execution would hardly be possible.
All of the technical expertise in the world is nothing without the real world knowledge, testing, and experience to back it up. And the only means to effectively convey that over the internet are for people to discuss it in other-than-technical terminology. For instance, saying "this broke due to these forces imposed on it" will automatically be countered with "I disagree. I was just recently on trail X at offroad park X and witnessed with my own eyes my buddy's truck do just that with different results."
Then another "expert" will chime in and contradict that point. And so on and so forth. I dont see how anything would stand to be gained in an arena where the contributers and peanut gallery werent able to freely b.s. and completely chew up and digest all angles of a certain topic.
"All Tech, All The Time" sounds cool. It just really isnt a viable option without the so-called bitching, bickering, and chest pounding that comes along with all the actual useful input. Its just up to the reader to know how to wade through the quagmire of bullshit around here get to the tech and actually learn something. I mean, shit, Pirate4x4 is a WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE! And its COMPLETELY FREE for all to peruse. Its a small price to pay to have to deal with the machismo and testosterone in trade for some of the best raw information and evidence and schooling you can find here.
Thats why I'm still here. :smokin:
quagmire 04-03-2006, 12:56 PM Hey fellas and ladies, i'm new here, not to wheeling just Pirate. I have to say holy fuck it's like hanging out in my garage pissed with my buddies! Everyone shootin' calls, this is great! If i get tech info that's just a friggin' bonus!
Thanks for havin' me.
-Quagmire.
Roksamy 04-03-2006, 01:44 PM hey , man you are the tech 'round here. Quit yer whinin and teach me something new:D :flipoff2: :D
