i've got a line on a 99 WJ limited with a blown 4.7. everywhere i've read tells me that changing in another 4.7 will be a waste of time cause it'll just explode again. so what other engines can i **realistically** swap in without too much trouble?? (i know that anything is possible with enough time and money). has anyone heard of a chevy 350 or something similarly simple thrown into a WJ??
The 4.7 isn't that bad of a motor IMO.

Go with the HO 4.7L. They are good motors. Smooth running and are pretty snappy. Just have to keep them well oiled with the OHC. I have seen a couple comp guys running them because they have the right power at the right RPM's. The new 4.7L have 310hp, I would see if you can pick up the HO cams and intake so you can get that extra hp.

My daily driver is a 99 wj with 325,000 plus on the original 4.7 and it still runs great. No issues whatsoever and the valve covers have never been off. It frequently tows my built xj on a trailer and uses less than a quart of oil between 3000 mile oil changes. Don't be afraid of a 4.7, it's got good power, even the non HO version, and I expect mine to continue for a long time still.

I second the 4.7 HO, I have one with 100k and it runs great and makes good power. The only swap I would even thing about is 5.3 Vortec with a 4l65e or a 4crd out of a libby.

Not sure what needs to be done if you change years but that 4.7L was only in the '99-'00 model years. It's an "N" VIN model and has a 16 tooth crankshaft tone wheel; apparently the '01 and up 4.7L's are different. There's also a few Dakota engines that will work but I'm not sure what years.
I just recently pulled my 4.7L out of my '99 WJ and I'm looking for a replacement or a rebuild kit - PM me if you have a line on anymore!

i like the 4.7. i've driven many with a gazillion miles.
i have one in my commander with over 45K on it. it does great. and the mileage isn't too bad as long as i'm not in a headwind.

Got a 4.7 in a 2000 Dakota 4x4 and love it as well; no complaints and I just might pick up another vehicle with the same mill.
