: KOH PREP and what are you packing in the rig?

What's everyone doing to get ready for KOH 09?

I'm starting my LCQ prep list and am wondering what the veteran KOH teams are doing to get ready? and what are you guys packign for tools and stuff on the actual rig since its a no chase race this year.

My list is going to be a combo of Werock and KOH prep.

-New firewall and Hood
-Parts/cooler basket
-New fuel cell
-New shock mounts and bump stops
-Removable spare Tire rack
-new interior panels and gauges
-new exhaust and floor boards
-fresh set of springs for KOH with a bit more arch for uptravel.

A lot of things are just finishing off last years list.

Sounds like most of the teams (and the organizers) will be running 2-meter VHF radios. Technically, you need to buy a business band radio (or radio from a race radio supplier like PCI) and have them preset for the frequencies you want to monitor or operate on.

Unofficially, you can use a 2m Ham radio, tweaked to operate in the 150-160Mhz range. Ham radios generally operate in the ~140-150Mhz range. Amateur radio operators frown on this type of use--mostly because of people abusing the rules--but by operating on these racing frequencies and tuning your radio so it doesn't broadcast a "wide" signal and "step on" adjacent frequencies...you can run them without offending anyone.

No chase should be very interesting. I'd think every team should throw in a few sticks of 6013 and some jumper cables...and hope another team would loan you their battery in the event of breakage and needing to weld.

First, for the LCQ you need to strip your rig down so it is as light as possible. You don't need tools, spares, or anything cause the LCQ should take you less than 10 minutes to complete.

for the KOH race, I am taking a regular set of trail tools, water, a couple of power bars, co2 bottle, plug kit. I plan to buy a new set of Krawlers before the race and forget the spare. I don't know if that is the smartest thing to do, but that's the current plan. I have ran the last 2 KOH races without a flat so I am going to gamble and see if I can make it through 3 races.

I am pretty sure that race radio's will be mandatory this year but you need to ask Dave to confirm.

Yeah for the LCQ we'll have the rig right stripped down with no extras. Just have to be ready to run in the actual race.

CO2, we're running A/C, so we never run out. If it can get shoehorned in, we'll have a york in place soon!

Can I notch the frame to fit an a/c compressor?!

Spare axle front and rear, tool bag, plug kit, spare tire/wheel, driveshaft, water, nitrogen bottle for oba, braided steel brake hose, steering hose (long enough to use in any location), ammo can (stuffed with small parts, bolts, wire, etc), snatch strap, ATF, oil, water in camelback for us, cliff blocks (gummy bear like energy gel), first aid kit.......That's all i've come up with so far. We will likely have the least amount of pit help of anybody there so we're takin it all.

Last year used a full face helmet and that sucked as you can't see anything inside the rig. This year maybe my open face with goggles. Definitely goggles no matter what!

That might be the plan. You have to start a chassis befor you can finish one. February is getting closer and closer.

If I had to take a guess on what will happen... I'd say they stand a chance of over driving the rig and breaking so make sure you have a quick disconnect on that winch line.

Ive already got hundreds of dollars :smokin: in gift cards and equipment being donated!!!

I need a good profile/ background/ pics of the rigs and drivers of the Toy based rigs for the raffle!!! SBC and Dana 60s need not apply!!! 25% of the raffle proceeds will go to Friends of Johnson Valley and the other 75% will be split between the Toyota based racers.

I have a question and i want to see if you guys know the answer. I dont mean to hijack your thread. The promoters are saying no chase or help outside of pits. Anybody get a answer on how they are going to enforce this rule? At expo some big name teams were saying there are still going to rely on people bringing them parts. I emailed the promoter and asked but got no answer and im sure they are busy. Im going to be pitting and helping a couple of good friends at the race and was wondering whats the scoop on it. I know some racers have the same question to but dont want to ask and have anybody think they are trying to get around the rule.

That is pretty gay if some big name teams plan to cheat. My guess teams racing can protest if they see another team doing that, then there is the :black helicopters: flying around.

I know what ya mean! It would suck to loose the race because you played by the rules and the team that wins didnt. But what do you to be a tadle tale. I just hope they come up with a good way to enforce it or throw the rule out to make it fair.

I know it was mentioned pit teams will have designated route not on the course to get from pit to pit. So other than a crazy spectator no one but the racer's should be on the course.

I don't have an email from you.

If you cheat you are not only DQ'd from this race, you'll never race in KOH again.

Clear enough

I don't care who you are... the rules apply to everyone

Just like in all desert race situations, you state the rules, if someone breaks the rules they are DQ'd (forever in this case), being a tattletail is not the problem, the guy that knowingly breaks the rule is the problem, rat him out for what he is, a cheat.... am I correct ?

O for sure rich! Its no fun if everyone isnt playing and racing by the same rules. With our style rigs (2 seaters) carrying spares for almost everything isnt a problem lots of room. I just wonder how some teams are going to get all there spares on their rigs but i guess thats for them to figure out and take the chance of not having what they need between pits.
