: Elementary Engine Swap Questions

1) Is the 1.3 EFI control module and harness "plug and play"
with a 1.6 8V EFI motor or should I switch it all out for the
1.6 stuff?? Even if the 1.3 stuff does "work", would the 1.6 stuff be better for some reason??

2) One of the motors that I´ve got a line on is a 1.6 8V
carburated, so the guy says. This seems strange since carbed
Vitaras were never sold here. In any event, can I use the
EFI junk from my 1.3 on this motor with no adverse side-
effects??

3) If I get ahold of a 1.6 16V engine, together with the ECM
and harness, are there any electrical adaptaions required for
this setup to work in a Sami??

BTW, I STILL have not lost hope on finding that Holy Grail
2.5 V6. However, as of yet, I haven´t found anything...

TIA

1 - The 1.6 EFI that I got was not plug-n-play with my 1.3 EFI harness. There were differences with the connectors on the throttle body. However, the throttle body bolt pattern is the same, so you can swap TB's if you have both. The 1.6 intake manifold is also different from the 1.3 (as I recall, it's EGR location is the major difference).

edit - I did measure the 1.6 TB. It's the same size, and the injector appears to be the same as the 1.3L. That suggests, the only difference was injector duration.

2 - I used the 1.3 EFI on my 1.6 8V motor. Yes it will work. The trick is fuel flow. Ya need more :). I raised my fuel pressure to compensate for the bigger motor. The stock pump won't cut it, so I added a boost pump. I've got an adjustable regulator, and typically run about 65-70 psi (38 psi is stock). You can modify the stock regulator, but you need spares. It's a touchy process. :)

3 - I like to hear an answer to this as well. Can a 1.6 8V ECM be plugged into a 1.3 EFI harness??

edit - I've got a 1.6 TB and manifold laying around. I can snap some pics if that would help...

Thanks for the info... Yeah, some pics would be great!!!

Here ya go....
I'll just post links so everyone won't have to download to see the thread. They are 600x800 (1/2 origional size)...

The 1.3 EFI manifold:

http://www.portraitsbyjess.netfirms.com/tech/13efi_2.jpg
http://www.portraitsbyjess.netfirms.com/tech/13efi_3.jpg
The 1.6 EFI manifold:

http://www.portraitsbyjess.netfirms.com/tech/16efi_2.jpg
http://www.portraitsbyjess.netfirms.com/tech/16efi_3.jpg
Some of the obvious differences:
1 - The TB and connector is different. The injector connects with a seperate 2 pin plug on the 1.6.
2 - There is a valve on the 1.6 TB that does not exist on the 1.3 TB.
3 - The 1.6 appears to use some vac sensors (water temp) that don't exist on the 1.3 manifold (everything is electric on the 1.3).
4 - The EGR is in a different location.

The fuel pressure regulator I used:

Thanks for the pics, they´ll come in handy...

BTW, you said that you used a boost pump on the fuel system. What are you using and where´d you install it??

This is the one I used.
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=26266',650,505,'MSD2225'

I mounted it on the frame just before the fuel filter. It works fine, but is a bit noisy. There are some factory vehicles that used external HP pump, and most of those have noise shields around them. If you have contacts at the part's store, they can probably find you something for about the same or less $$.

One thing about it, with a pick-up pump (factory in-tank) and the high volume boost pump the motor never starves for fuel! I've rolled a complete revolution and the motor never stumbled. ;) I just can't seem to remember to turn the motor off when I'm upside down.... :)

Holy Grail 2.5L V6? You trying to find a V6 in that size? Look in the 93-97 Ford PRobe GT's and Mazda MX-6's! Aluminum heads(and maybe block) 164HP 160TQ and they run great! I have a 94 and I have run with some stout V8's.....

You can find these engines in stock form usually pretty cheap.

Is that what you wanted?

Mazda 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5 litre 24 valve DOHC V6 engines

These engines suffer badly from oil leakage problems which, in turn, will affect spark plug wire reliability and performance. As these engines get older, they suffer more than most from oil leaking from the cam cover gaskets.]

I've heard mixed things about these motors.

Yes, they do leak from the o-ring seals in the plug wells for the cam cover. THis is easily fixable by replacing the seals. My engine has 125,000 miles on it and I have 2 or so cylinders leaking from that problem. I have never had any problems with plug wires goign bad from this.
The engine are strong little suckers! I have hit redline in mine(missed shifts and tires breaking loose) many times without problems.
If you do look into these engines I would advise trying to find a 95+ engine due to them being better with the Mazda quirks.

There is also a J Spec version of the 2.5 which has around 200 hp! They can be had for aroudn $1500 via an engine importer.

I have had my Probe for about 3 years now and have put about 100K miles on it(mostly highway) and I really like it and would buuy one again! I wouldn't let the oil leak problem bother you. MIne has been leaking out of one cylinder for about 80K miles and the other one has been leaking for about 60K miles... I have only put 2 sets of wires on this thing and never due to a failure, just due to mileage.

BTW, who has done a Mazda Rotary swap into a Sammi?

I think it was his wife or G/f that I posted back and forth with a little on here about Rotary engines in Zuks.. I asked her for some pics and never heard back from her...

I would love to see some pics of a Zuk with a rotor motor! I may be getting a couple ZUks and I love Mazda Rotaries!!!!! THat would be a sweet combo!

The only problem I have heard about rotarys is they make their power at high rpms, but with 320 hp how bad can it be!

I was thinking instead of running a turbo, why not a supercharger? That way you could get more low end without the turbo lag(unless you are good with turbos and cant tune the lag out)...

Or hell, why not both? :)

BTW, I tried going to your website to check out your Zuk and the addy is not working.... :(

Yea, my bro-in-law has me on his server where he works (free) and he changed jobs. It should be back up in about a week. Thanks for the info though.

Oh yeah, then there´s Rotozuk. He´s not as literate as Mazuki, but at least he´s on POR. He´s fun to talk with, you just gotta use small, simple words...:D

Hey Wayne, they´re asking for advice, so give it t´em!!!

Ya fawker!!!!:flipoff2: :D
