: More powerful steering servo... what are the options?

Title more or less states it but to add more info.

I've got a bone stock Tamiya CR-01 (aka FJ40) with a plain old Futaba MS radio.

Love it so far out of the box but wish the steering servo had a little more power to it so I can turn/push the rig around.

What are my choices for a stronger servo?

I've got no intentions of going rock racing or other competitive type stuff... just fun fucking around:homer:

Check out some of the high torque servos that Tower Hobbies has. They are priced good, but I don't have any experience with them. I have a Hi Tec 5955TG in my crawler. It's a 333 oz/in servo. It cost around $100, though....

Your kind of limited with a standard AM radio. Be on the look out for TowerPro sevos. They are cheap and make a good amount of power... but they are cheap. So buy a couple at a time in case one burns up on you.

hitec 645mg, cheap enough to work and still be disposable/replaceable. I've learned I'm going to break servos regardless of whether or not they are $40 or $120 servos.

look for a 1/4 scale servo. cheap and strong, but also larger in size.

I ran the 645 in my AX-10 when I first put it together. It worked ok, but would run out of power too easy for what I was doing. I stripped it out so I went to a 5955TG and love it. Like going from hydro assist to full hydro. Now she will turn no matter what.

I run the 5955TG and I've abused the crap out of it, and so far it's broken only two of my knuckles. Servo is fine.
I highly recommend this servo.

Regardless of what servo you get make sure you get a Castle BEC. No integrated BEC can supply enough amps to power a strong servo.

The novak rooster has a 5A 6V bec which is enough to throw a 5955 around. The castle BEC is great but not always necessary. The 5955 and 8711 are both great servo's.

Yeah thats just not true, I'm running the Novak Goat Crawler and it pushes the hell out of my 5955. I'm talking about Get the tires wedged, turn the wheel, and rip the beads out of the beadlock rims power!

If you're in an area that gets hot, check out rccrawler.com for ways to heat proof your high torque servos. Some guys here in Arizona have burned them out after doing several back to back battery runs.
