: Splinter
jmcgillkx99 10-02-2008, 08:24 PM Hey I've been around here a while and finally decided to post my junk.
I got my ZJ two years ago I traded my uncle a 2004 Kawasaki KX250F for it. A 93' ZJ silver with the wood paneling. Hence where the nickname "Splinter" comes in, pretty much instantly painted the wood black, but the nickname always has stuck. Anyways heres some specs and picks of the slow build up.
Started out with 2.5" BDS lift installed by local shop with 31x10.5 Wildcat EXTs
Heres a few picks of BLM in my backyard in Bend, Oregon

I wheeled/DD it like that for a year or so. Then I got a set of 33x13.5 Toyo Mt's in trade for doing a timing belt on a volkswagen passat and a pair of 2" BB in the rear and ACOS in the front. So I was at 4.5". I cut the fenders some but was still rubbing pretty bad cause they are so wide and had not cut the fenders yet.

I then got the bug to go bigger and ordered the Rusty's 5.5 LA
Intall pics of the LA's at my dads shop

I then built some rock sliders
They are made outta 2x4" rectangular tube and tied into my LA frame mounts with 1.5" square tube

Then last spring I got the chance to go to the Rubicon with a few guys.
Got my tow rig 3 days before we left 96' Powerstroke 5spd on 35' BFG's
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg194/jmcgillkx99/100_0372.jpg
jmcgillkx99 10-02-2008, 08:31 PM Heres a few shots of the rubicon haven't got very many pics of me. Ran a set of 35' Yokohama Geolanders.
Carnage at the Rubicon included smashing tierod into front differential, some pretty good rock damage on the passengers side doors and broken rear axle shaft. (Lincoln locked) Of course I had the wrong spare axle shaft but a 8.25" shaft will fit in a dana 35 by knocking the roller bearings outta the race and running the axle on the. Was pretty crude but finally made it back to camp about sunrise. That was the end of my weekend. The orange xj on 37 boggers ripped the steering box off the unibody went to town and had it plated and ripped the tracbar off the frame the next day. The Black xj on 37 TSL's broke 3 ujoints. The trusty old Bronco on 38 TSL's never broke that was a first, usually hes about 10min into the trail and breaks.

jmcgillkx99 10-02-2008, 08:35 PM Went out a few weeks ago to Edison snow park. Local spot about 25 miles away. Just a buncha snowmobile trails nothing to technical but pretty tight. Took the doors of for the first time on this trip.

So the last time I went out wheeling I hit a tree and smashed up my passenger's front corner shoved it back about 4-5in and broke headlight, turn signal, etc... Anyways to make a long story short had the day off work and was bored and this is the result.

jmcgillkx99 10-02-2008, 08:38 PM Well that was about 3 weeks ago I started on it and I am almost finished.
Also started building a front bumper and winch mount for my mile marker 9500lb winch my ex-girlfriend got me for my b-day two years ago.

Im not really liking the way that the winch sticks out like 2ft. off the front end. Anyone have any ideas about how to mount it farther back? Or should I just sell it? Cause I really need a sye kit and to install my np231. And whenever I am out wheeling I am always with other rigs so there's always someone there to tow me out so I don't really need a winch.
ashmanjeepXJ 10-02-2008, 09:09 PM Relocate the solenoid pack and recess the winch into your grill. Should get you a good 4in or so. The other option is to mount the winch between the frame behind the bumber. I like mine higher on top of the bumper.

Next on the list is probably a 44/14 axle combo with 39.5 Iroks might be next spring concrete work gets a little slow around here in the winter, but theres good snow wheelin :D

Thanks for the ideas I am debating getting rid of the winch and using the money for something else but it would be nice to have a winch. We will see if I can get it shoved far enough back in the grill or not.
dozer_xj 10-02-2008, 09:38 PM This may be stupid BUT I will throw it out. Why ot set your winch up on one of those 2" reciver hitch things. Take it off when you dont need it...put it on when you do. Just make a front bumper with a reciver and your good to go. Maybe?

My step dad actually suggested that but I don't have the room or wanna lug it around in the back of my jeep, but I think that it is a good idea if I had the room for it
dozer_xj 10-02-2008, 09:55 PM You have more room than the Wrangler and Cj guys. You could put another reciver in the cargo area to hold it and keep it from flying around. I might just use this idea for myself!
Capt. Nemo 10-02-2008, 10:44 PM A 44 front with 39.5" Irocs is asking for trouble. Might want to really think about what your breaking and what going that big will really gain you in the long run. Is the Rubicon the hardest stuff you've run?

I would really like to put a 60 in the front but I don't have a grand to drop on one. I got a buddy that has a 79' Ford with a 44/60 39.5 Irocs and a built 460 and in the 6yrs or so he's had it he's only broke two axle shafts. Im not saying that I won't break stuff cause I am sure I will but just don't have the cash flow for a 60. Yeah the Rubicon is the hardest stuff I have run don't get to wheel much except local stuff which isn't that challenging with 33's, plus I am pretty new to four wheeling so I haven't had many chances to go other places.
dumblucky 10-05-2008, 10:07 AM dana 44 and 40" IROks sweet .....just make sure you carry two sets of axles ball joints u joints etc, basically all the parts you need to trail fix it twice. once for the break and once for the limp out:shaking:
and on that note you cant afford a sye ..do you have any idea how much a set of 40" iroks run..good luck im sure it will look sweet at the mall..
seriously..
nice work on the front narrowing

Well I never said I couldnt afford a sye, I am just a broke ass college kid so I can only afford about 1 or 2 new parts a month for the jeep, and I was just saying if I sold it I could get one faster cause I need one. Also I have a guy that has a set of 40" Iroks with 60% tread and he wants $300, I know they are expensive, but I don't need new ones. If I come across a good deal on a 60 id get it but everyone wants a dick and a ball for them so i'll just settle for having to replace a few parts here and there, atleast I am out there wheeling and having fun cause to me thats what its all about. Im not trying to start shit or anything just stating my opinion. BTW thanks for the comment on the dovenose, its my first big modification and fabrication experience.
dozer_xj 10-07-2008, 06:47 AM ...I am just a broke ass college kid so I can only afford about 1 or 2 new parts a month for the jeep,
I feel your pain there. What I have been doing is waiting around till I find good deals. The car dealership had a set of almost brand new Superswamper ssr's (37"x12.50") for $200! I bought a 78 F250 for the axles. Parted the rest of the truck out and MADE MONEY on getting axles for my jeep. If you just wait around you will find good deals and know where to find them it will be easier on your wallet. You have to look somewhere besides on pirate becuase everyone knows there shit is worth something on here:flipoff2: I think the deal you found on those tires is a pretty good one also!
jmcgillkx99 10-07-2008, 11:39 PM Got a few more things done on the front end mounted lights and a few cosmetic things. Anyways heres a few more pics
Borrowed this pic its where I got the idea on how to cut my fenders

So I picked up a dana 44 rear axle will 3.73s and another dana 30 with the matching gears for $100. Hopefully they will last till I get something else.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg194/jmcgillkx99/100_0419.jpg
Welded in some gussets on the upper control arm mounts since the rear one that the trac-bar mounts to on my old axle ripped off the axle tube.
I got both axles in and went to bolt up my driveshafts and my front driveshaft is about two inches to short. The axle I got had the yoke for the cv driveshaft and mines the u-joint so I swapped yokes and it was too short. I got to looking at the axles and the housing on the new axle is about two inches longer. Has anyone ever run into this problem? Or is there a driveshaft that I can get to make work? I have been thinking about just making my own. Anyone have any ideas id appreciate the help.
phillyzj 11-30-2008, 09:33 PM I think you should put square headlights in there :D i'm not a fan of round lights on a ZJ.
jmcgillkx99 12-15-2008, 09:55 AM So I got the axles in and it ends up the front axle I got had a cv joint front driveshaft instead of a u-joint and I thought no big deal, just swap yokes. Wrong! The pinion and housing are about two inches shorter than a axle with u-joints. So that made my driveshaft to short. I decided to make one, since its a trail rig only wont see very high speeds so it didnt need to be perfect. So I cut the ends off my old shaft which was a little tricky because they slide inside the tube about a inch so I carefully cut the weld with a cut off wheel. Once I had them off I got a piece of dom tubing and cut it to lenght and tack welded the ends on. I put two tack welds 90 degrees apart and bolted it in. Once it was in I used a dial indicator gauge and rubber mallet to get it as straight as possible. I got it within 30 thousandths. Then welded it up. I took it out on the street and got up to 60mph and had no vibs. Figured that was good since I will never get to 60mph on the trails.
Took it out for a test run this weekend in the snow, which ended up being three test runs fri nite sat nite and sunday. It was a blast, everthing worked great, could definitally tell the difference with the 3.73 gears instead of the 3.55 could still use lower gears but it works for now. Heres a few pics

jmcgillkx99 12-24-2008, 02:21 PM So I finally got around to building a front bumper and mounting my winch. I've only had the winch for 2yrs :D I cut out the stock front bumper and grill to suck the winch back tight to the radiator and of course in the process my buddy pushed the winch into the oil cooler and a hose clamp on the cooler poked a hole in my radiator. So I had to get that fixed only cost $40 so not to bad.

urbanmuddboger 12-29-2008, 12:46 AM i would plate that bumper with some 3/16 or 1/4 inch (1/4 being overkill)
the pic below(red) is what i am taking about also mabye a hoop to protect the winch

Thanks for the tip. I was actually planning on plating that with 1/4" and do a hoop. That and finishing off the ends of the bumper. I am also going to run some plate from the bumper down to the radiator crossmember since the bumper doesn't protect the radiator.
urbanmuddboger 12-31-2008, 01:07 AM good idea
Blaine B. 01-02-2009, 10:59 PM I like everything except for those "recovery" points on the bumper.
jmcgillkx99 01-04-2009, 11:07 PM Went out wheeling this weekend to Schwatz Canyon here in Central Oregon. Had never been there before it was a blast. Till I broke a shock and blew up my rearend :mad3: Haven't tore it apart yet but I think the ring and pinion went put a few dings and a hole in my diff cover :D

So after I dropped off the jeep at home went and picked up a 3/4 ton ford with a hp44 and 60. Ordered all the brackets and high steer kit from Ballistic Fab. Will be starting on it in a week or two. My shops full of buddies rigs straight axle'n a yota and a xj goin on 3/4 tons and 40's.
Blaine B. 01-04-2009, 11:26 PM Looks like you guys had fun, even with the breakage.
jmcgillkx99 01-08-2009, 11:45 PM Well my plans have changed from going 44/60 to 60/14bolt :D Got a good deal on a 60. Then was going to run the 60 in the rear and sold my 36's and 5 lug wheels and the kid has a 14 bolt i am picking up tomorrow for $150. Ordered Ballistic brackets just used them on a buddies XJ they are Beef! I will get some pics posted up soon. I am wanting to find some H1 wheels and 39.5 or 42 Iroks to run. Should be sweet!
FlatBlackXJ 01-12-2009, 12:45 AM I pretty much wheeled it like that for a year. Heres some pics of a few local spots

Cold as the Rockies!
jmcgillkx99 02-03-2009, 09:15 PM So I finally got a chance to work on my jeep today. Got a 60 front a few weeks ago from a buddy it needed stub axles and spindles rotors, etc. I got the spindles and that stuff from the junkyard off a 3/4 ton ford with the TTB. The ones with the diesel motor actually ran 60 knuckles and brakes. Picked it up everything from the knuckle out for $150. I got all my brackets welded on and the axle put under the jeep. Borrowed my buddy's 39.5" Iroks to test fit still need to find some wheels and tires. I got a 14 bolt last weekend and started stripping it. Does anyone know if the Grand Cherokees are wider than the Cherokees, because I used the measurements I took off my buddy's Cherokee to place my brackets and the coil mounts are like two to three inches to close together on the axle and my springs are crooked? Or if anyone knows the measurement either from the centerline of the axle to the center of the coil mount, or just coil mount to coil mount. I sold my d30 so I have nothing to measure off of.

Going to order my full hydro from S&N FAB tomorrow :D and cut out the floor and move the fuel tank up to clear that huge 14 bolt
Oh and my new tool $50 off craigslist

jmcgillkx99 02-18-2009, 10:44 PM I Cut out the rear cargo are floor today to move the fuel tank up. Was kinda nervous about doing it but it wasnt too bad I just followed the frame rails then I cut 5" out of the fuel tank skid plate and welded it back together and bolted it in. The fuel tank now sits on the skid and I am reusing the original straps on top to hold down the tank. I also made some rear shock mounts for the axle. I have heard of people having to move there filler necks up but I just drilled through the inner fender and ran the hoses right to the filler neck. I am going to have to find a different hose for the filler, but the vent hose worked just fine. Also to anyone else who has moved there fuel tank, did you make new fuel lines because mine are too short. I am assuming I can get the plastic fittings and some hard plastic line and make new ones. Was just wondering what everyone else did?

jmcgillkx99 02-22-2009, 08:04 PM Pulled the front axle back out and built a truss outta 3/8" plate and built new upper control arm mounts. Also got my tie rod built outta 1/4 wall DOM. I moved the rear upper coil spring mounts back six inches and plated the body where they attach. So now my springs aren't in a S shaped. I also started plating the frame where my rear trac bar bracket was since I ripped it off the frame a few times and the frame is pretty much destroyed there. :D Hope to have it rolling this week need to mount my hydro steering when it gets here and lengthen my fuel lines a weld everything up. Taking it to my buddies to use his 220 to weld it.

jmcgillkx99 03-12-2009, 11:53 PM Built a bracket for the orbital valve to use the existing steering box bolt holes. Then built brackets to mount the ram to the axle and the tierod, was a tight fit but got it to work and tucked it between the axle and tierod. I am going to put some tube off the axle under the ram to protect it a little more.

Maroon Monsoon 04-06-2010, 12:36 AM NICE! time for us to go wheeling!
by the way, what's up with that green side kick in your earlier pics? I always see it parked in the same place in town with a flat tire.... I want to see it back in action!
hghgrad 04-10-2010, 09:11 AM That's one heck of a backyard. Nice build, I rarely like ZJ's but yours is the exception right now
98GreenZJ 04-10-2010, 10:40 PM Are you runnin flex joints in the rear or are u runnin the rubber bushing that come with the LA kit? Did u just reuse all the rustys arms and just triangulate them?? Also what did you use for the frame brackets?

I am just running the rustys arms with rubber bushings I just triangulated them. I cut up the control arm mounts kept the low link part and built off that for the upper arms Ill take some pics tomorrow
Went out wheeling yesterday dont have any pics of me kinda hard to take pics of yourself driving. I ended up breaking my hydraulic ram mount off the axle, so today I built a much beefier one and also built a tcase skid
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg194/jmcgillkx99/IMG_0521.jpg
Put a 6" 3/8's extension in the tube and ratchet strapped the ram to the axle to keep it together to get back to the trailer. Worked good I even had to head back up the trail to winch my buddy back on his wheels
