You mean you couldnt picture a 4 seat scorpian before you saw this picture? Not picking on this design I understand form follows function, thats why all these full tube buggies look so damn similar. Hope to see some more recent pictures

IMHO - the 4 seater Scorpion looked too long, this one looks better, more compact...
tvguy 08-06-2002, 04:56 PM These are the most recent ones I have. Note engine/trans/tcase have been mounted and floor pans are starting to take shape . . .

twistedmetal 08-08-2002, 07:36 PM Hey, Frankie! I just finished up the front suspension on my Sidekick today! Using your advise, things went fairly well. I do have some issues with the upper wishbone contcting the pinion under stuff, but I will treat that later. I'm headed to the rear now, and had a question for 'ya. I was leaning towards a reverse, upside-down 3-link. I was going to mount a wishbone on the bottom side of the axle housing with the "v" end located just under the rear t-case output. I was then going to truss the hell out of it and use it to protect the rear DS. I would then use either traditional links on the top or another wishbone to control the axle. Following me? Basically, it is I^I, with the ^ on the bottom, pointing at the t-case. It just seems like my I I links would be awfully short, and since they are on the outer edge of the housing, I think they will cause a lot of axle steer.
Ever heard of a Mono-link? My original plan was to run a beefy wishbone that was welded or bolted to the housing. This would use a panhard rod or an upper wishbone with a slip joint to locate the axle laterally. Think about this for a few seconds and then give me your opinion, please! I am going to continue to exploit you for your knowledge! That's what you get for proving me wrong!

I am going to continue to exploit you for your knowledge! That's what you get for proving me wrong! i think a mono link will antisquot to much or as i call it jack up the suspension.i have no experiance with dual wishbone oposing each other ,but i have seen some pics and they seem to shove the axle to the oposite side on stuff or the compresion side of axle.the revers 4 or 3 link puts the long bars on the upper side of the axle and they are more paralale with the machine and shoud be at not much angle or much less than a stanard 4 or 3 link wich wiil cut down most or all of axle steer .how long will your links be if they are revers 3 or 4 link.how much angle do you think they will be at .where is suspension cycle at at ride height 50/50?
twistedmetal 08-09-2002, 09:27 AM So you're actually saying that the upper links can be longer than the lower in this situation? What will this do to my pinion angle once axle is articulated? I think it is time to build another model so I can fully understand! I guess I was assuming that it would have to be similar to the front, with the uppers being slightly shorter than the lowers. I can get the upper links on the rear axle flat-no problem, I just am not sure about the lengths. The lower wishbone SHOULD be right around 36"-38" which means that my uppers should be....?
BTW, sorry to intrude on this thread. Just had a question for THE MAN, then I'll go away!
RKCRAWLER 08-09-2002, 10:29 AM Frankie --your just jealous of my D-30 on my jeep. And I am CRAZY so you had better watch it come september!!!!:flipoff2: On the real though- I be down for EROCC cheering you on in september. BTW, sorry to intrude on this thread. Just had a question for THE MAN, then I'll go away! is your axle hi pinion?make them 28'' long and mount both links uppers and lower at 80% of distance of the axle mounts .i have only built 3 revers link systems and i am still testing.my links are longer on the top becaus i have very hi pinions and they mount at yoke horizontal line and vertical line my lowers are in the same V as you are doing and they are 75% of the length of the upper link length this set up keeps my caster at about 1 degree diffrence during full suspension cycle. if i did not have such a hi pinion this set up woud most likly bind the joints remember i have a steering axle for my rear axle so keeping caster during a jump is important for my machine. i think you need to use the standard my 4 link formula even on this revers 3 link becaus you need the shaft pointing at your transfer case yoke. so make your lower run parallal or cloes with your drive shaft and then make your uppers 75% of the length of your lower length .and mount them 80% at frame of the length of your axle mounts .examplle if your heims are 10'' virtical distance apart uper link to lower link then 80% of this is 8'' so then you will mount as cloes to this as possible at the frame.this formula has some antisquot .the more the traction and the steeper the hill the more antisquot it has but on level ground it stays cloes to level under power .;)

twistedmetal 08-10-2002, 06:11 PM Hey,Frankie! I am appreciating all the help!
Are you making your own beadlocks or you are making custom wheels with beadlocks inside and out? If you are making beadlocks, I am very interested! I am just getting ready to make a purchase.
A 127" WB? That would be like wheelin my Suburban! Careful with that WB on steep hills, it might flip over!:D Any idea what the weight on that monster will be once completed? It looks like you were able to keep the steel down to a minimum with out losing any strength. Just curious...

127" WB is as short as we could make it and have four REAL seats. Take a seat and sit down in it and measure how many inches the seat and your feet take up. Remember this is not a full comp. rig. Not that we wont try a few. I can carry 3 spotters. (swedish bikini team) WMS has a rig thats 125" and he is climbing everything, and with only front steer. I will have 4-way to help in the tight spots. If you have never driven anything with 4-way steer, you will LOVE IT.
Weight ???? hopefully at 5500lbs or less. I have a big block, rockwels, tools, welder and batterys not the stuff that makes a light rig, but very reliable= fun.
I have some of the duel 32 bolt bead locks and they are great. Putting them together 64 bolts per wheel was a pain.

I'm just kiddin'! I know what the plans are for it and it sounds AWESOME! Any pics of the beadlocks? I wanna' see some!
#5,500 is LIGHT for a rig with 2.5s and four seats. Very impressive. My wife won't let me bring any bikini-clad spotters. she's mean:(
I'm gonna take your advise(AGAIN) and move my upper wishbone mount higher up, Frankie. I am just fearing I may have starter/oil filter clearance issues. Figure it out as I go...

Call me on Friday or something. I'll be closed Wed. and on thursday I'll be trying to move a 50,000lb rock with 2 track hoes for my rock course next to the shop in the big field. later
ScoutsHonor 12-25-2002, 12:00 AM Frankie mentioned earlier that you were going to be running a TH400... and I assume this is still true...
So are those dual brake pedals, one for controlling each pinion brake? If so, looks damn nice... close enough you could control them at the same time, yet use both feet seperately when you needed it...
Very nice work Frankie... looks good!
bgreen 12-25-2002, 12:00 AM Frankie/Dibble: whats the belly pan clearance on that BAD ASS rig?
Thats the same WB Im going to be running this summer.
Overkiller 12-25-2002, 12:51 AM Damn that thing is sexy:eek:! I want to build a 4 seater buggy in a few years when my Yoda :nuke: but I hadn't found a design I like... but this one is cool, I love the hood line. When it's done I would love to have i.e; pay money for really detailed specs. I'd love to have a layout with all the measurements like engine set back, total length, width, height everything. I'd like to rip off the overall design of your chassis but add my own little touches basically. I'm really looking forward to seeing it finished.

Cool pictures. I miss riding in the Covington Pike bottoms. It looks like you went from Jackson, back towards Covington Pike. How much of the trails are still open?
Dan Dibble 12-25-2002, 07:39 PM scoutshonor: Yes I am working right now with TCI on a reverse valvebody turbo400 with compression braking. Question 2: Yes the chassis will have one front pedal and one rear pedal and being a driveline brake with detroit lockers it should turn circles around itself. (it will need to, being the size of a small school bus)
bgreen: Im not shure of ride hight yet. The shocks should be done tomorrow. Im going back over toi Frankies next Friday and I will get some pics with it off the jig.
Thanks again, Dan
BTW: my chassis looks much better than Frankies. :flipoff2:
Frankies chassis was cut up so many times, changing things it got looking disportional. But man we learned alot.

nvrenuf 12-26-2002, 01:15 PM Hey Dan, that thing is SWEET! Is that Avalanche buggy still at Frankie's? If so, can you take pics of the 2 side by side to show some scale of yours? It should be about the size of a Suburban isn't it?

CJ
Dan Dibble 01-10-2003, 03:19 PM The fuse panel is in Frankies old chassis, it was made by taylor.
The picture (standing on all four) is not ride hight it will be up about 6 inches from their. In that picture it is sitting on the shock bumpstops (fully compressed). I am shooting for a april completion time.

thejeepjeepkid 01-11-2003, 08:43 PM Wow. I have been looking at that thing for a while and I must say that is an awesome rig. I think that is the way REAL rock crawlers are supposed to be, high clearence, very stable, and big meats. For the tight competition type wheelin it may be a little hard but this guy could probably walk over some of those ledges and hills that the other buggies would be struggling to get up. Wow. I can't wait to hear how much it weighs. Keep up the good work.
THANKS!!! I love hill climbing. The weight is gonna be somewere between 5500-6000lbs I know thats real heavy compaired to current standards. But I wanted reliability and four seats. I will have some numbers next month.

Dan Dibble 02-05-2003, 09:21 PM Ok, the shock res. are not yet installed. It is still sitting at full compression because of no springs. I want to have it at full ride weight when I figure the spring rate. By the way we weighed it for the hell of it today and it weighed 4,780 lbs not to bad for a four seater with rockwells and a big block. Granted it had no drive shafts, steering cylinders, batterys, wire, beer, beer, etc. But I think it shuld weigh around 5500 when done. we will see.

Dan You know what the easiest way to cut lugs off of a tire is, right?
Use a sawzall blade with the toothed side ground to a knife edge. Won't work for crap until it gets hot. Then its LIKE BUTTAH! Dan Sutter did all the lugs on his little 33s in like 5 seconds.
Okay, maybe not, but it's fast. :D
Dan Dibble 02-06-2003, 08:58 PM I found out about that after the first two tires. I never belived it would work. It works awsome with very little mess.

elf_cruiser 02-07-2003, 01:36 AM Sweet man! Just out of curiosity, are those 5/8" heims or 3/4"?? I have been taking some slack from the locals for using 5/8" heims on my rockwells. From what I've seen they should hold up just fine.
Dan Dibble 02-07-2003, 06:36 AM QUOTE]Originally posted by elf_cruiser
Well, this is what they build Snipers with, and I've never heard of them breakin' suspension stuff, and YES they DO weigh as much as my rig. All the tabs are 3/16, and gusseted ;) which is pretty common for most shop built rigs. All the heims are chro-mo, and all the lowers are 5/8'", with a body stronger than a 3/4". The only 3/4" heims are up at the frame side of the upper links.
[/QUOTE]
By the way their is two snipers running rockwels with those joints.
Do you remember the Quagmire? Toptruck, fullsize chevy truck. Nos, bigblock, school bus rear axle 48" terra tires? I personally talked to the person who installed the 3/4" heim joints in that truck. And their have been no failures in 3-4 years.
I would say 95% of heim failure is in traction bars. "improper loading" Geometry of the links (or springs) fighting each other. (and shitty heims)
Suspensions when cycled go through arcs. If your arcs fight each other (cross) they will put unnessary stress on the whole suspension. Thus the heim will normally lose. Most people will just write it off and say these himes suck and buy bigger ones instead of fixing the real problem.
No I dont think everybody needs 3/4 heims. I had already purchased mine over a year and a half ago. Its funny how you didnt start to here about the OCCASIONAL 3/4 breakage untill the 1x 1 1/4 stuff came out. I have talked with many a "educated" rock crawling suspension gurus. And they said the 3/4 would be fine as long as my links dont bind or get bent. My links are 1.5 1026 seamless .500 wall lowers, 1.375 1026 dom .375 uppers. The tubing is threaded. I dont personally like inserts. (mayby ok for cro-mo)
I have a buddy running the same links and joints on a 5000lb plus early bronco for two years and have ripped the holes out of one of the shitty made brakets with still no heim failure.
Now had the 1x1 1/4 stuff been out when we started this loooong project I would have got them, just for INSURANCE but I had already spent a truckload of money on the 3/4 ones.
Alot of failures are just shitty joints they bought at their local hardware store or tractor supply
Frankie ran 3/4 heims and he did have a bad failure. But we concluded the 30 degree bends in the lower links to clear the tie rod was the cause for this failure. If the rod ends are being just pushed and pulled in a straight line they should be fine. Oh and his failure was a 70mph to dead stop emergency style with the brakes 90% biased to the front. All the other rod ends were fine.
Here is a tread that sat on the board for a few days with no real conclusion.

I would love to build a 4 seater buggy in the future and slap it onto one of my 404 Unimog chassis's. It wouldn't be as cool as yours though because yours was built from a pile of parts and miles of diamond plate.

kwrangln 04-27-2003, 10:48 AM Any reason ya didnt shave those axles? or is that still on the list with cutting that tire?
That thing looks kick ass.
jstarnes 04-27-2003, 11:08 AM Ok I seem to remember a post that talked about this but here goes any way
Why do you have the tierod behind the rear axel?It would seem that this setup would be good for "Crab" steer (if you set it up for this then I understand)but it would seem for general "round" steer you would want the front axel to have the tierod behind and the rear axel tierod in front so that the turning radius would be the same going forward/backward (in round steer mode)??
Now that I think about it it seems like your buggy is set up not to use the rear steer all the time??? I guess I see an advantage to having the rearaxel tierod infront of the axel and a disadvantage to having it behind???
Just wondering If theres something Im not seeing??
Thanks for the inlightnment(sp?)
Jason
Dan Dibble 04-27-2003, 12:09 PM Thanks,
The axles will get the skids and paint when the frame is being powder coated.
The steering will have the front wheels controlled with the steering wheel and the rear with the lever between the seats. The rear axle will have the tierod bhind the axle ontop of the knuckles. The front axle was a bit more difficult, because of the drive shaft and the suspension links. I tried to keep it on the rear but their was just not enough room. I was going to have to build a gaurd for the front brake so Im just going to swap the knuckles from side to side and put the ram/tierods on the front.:( . As I get the rig running I may get with station and work on some differnt steering systems but for now I will be keeping it simple.
jstarnes, What would it matter where the tie rod is??? it does the same thing on front and back.
You wouldnt want a full 4way steer rig for use at speed, not opposed anyway.
unimogken, Thanks, I would have used those 1300u axles had I known about them. And yes thats my test machine E-MAXX great for experimenting with coilovers.
Thanks guys for the compliments, Diamond Dan

to turn as tight of circle as you can it would matter (to do this you would want the rear axel tierod on the front axel)(I think they call it acrmen(sp cauz im dum)
and I agree with you on the speed thing
DONT get me wrong Im not trying to give you sh!t I think the rig Is VERY cool and looks to be well built I was just wondering if the was a certian reason you built it that way???Its your rig Im not saying its you should change it
kwrangln 04-27-2003, 02:41 PM Ackerman angle is a function of the steering arm angles in relation to the vehicle centerline as opposed to the tierods placement either before or behind the axle.
This link should help explain it. (http://www.rctek.com/handling/ackerman_steering_principle.html)
I know the page is for RC cars, but the principals are the same for real cars, trucks, and of course 4x4's. There is of course some debate about the usefulness of ackerman angle for an off road rig since we arenot concerned with high speed handling on the road.
jstarnes 04-27-2003, 04:12 PM ok so if you click the link and go about half way down to the part where it talks about angled steering arms and look at the pic with 36* and 25* and picture this as the front then picture the same pic fliped 180* this will be how im saying it should be IF you want to set up your front and rear steer for the tightest circle turn
the way Dan's is set up would be (if using the sample pic) inner front tire at 36* and the inner rear tire would be at 25* In a circle steer condition so the tires would not track in the same path(the rear end would want to walk out in a kind of off set circle path)BUT would walk sideways(well kind of sideways I call it crab steer) very well
The only thing I wanted to know is was this done for a reason??
and if so what reason?? Im not trying to see if I can piss up a pole farther than any one:flipoff2:

You are correct. But the only time this would be of concern would be it I was turning big circles and was worried about it. I have driven a 4 wheel steer chassis with 9" of front travel and only 7" rear and never noticed the rear not following the front.
I have to ask have you driven a 4 wheel steer rig? Not some silverado but a real controlable 4 wheel steer?

TNToy 07-28-2003, 02:04 AM Pretty much. I told him I think he should do ALL the panels in black, but his idea is to just do the stripe down the center in black and "leave some bling" on the fenders. We'll see.
I'd do it in all-black-paneling just cuz it would look sweet (IMO)... and so people standing next to it wouldn't be blinded when the sun caught it. That sucks big time... he's got all the panels along the shop wall, and if the sun is out theres a huge area you can't stand in if you wanna see. :(

*picture* Chassis is sitting on floor. Axles sitting under hoist waiting to be rebuilt. I have all the seals, pans and lockers. Transmission goes to TCI next week. After the axles get back in the motor will get a "light" rebuild.
I have 97% of the parts to put it together. Just no time. I promise to work on getting the axles close this weekend.
Should be running by the end of Oct.
Thanks for the kick in the ass.;)

generalee7 08-20-2003, 11:27 PM Holy sheet that looks awesome already! :D
ROCKDOG4X4 08-21-2003, 07:43 AM Dan's new buggy is awesome. Personally, I love four seater buggies. Very multi-purpose. Great for both family wheeling weekends with a cooler strapped to the back and for scaring the pants off three of your best friends.
Here is mine:
Grizzwald13 09-08-2003, 01:27 PM Any updated pics of it??
I cant wait to see this beast done and on the trail!!!!!!
TNToy 09-08-2003, 03:41 PM I was over therelast night. He's making good progress... one axle has been completely rebuilt and is ready to swing under there. The other is next on his list and will take the next 1.5-2 weeks.
Then the Tranny goes off to TCI for a full manual valve body w/ compression braking, the heads off the 454 are gonna get checked out while he goes through the bottom end, and after that it's finaly assembly time. :D But as for right now, no new progress pics. Chassis is on the shop floor covered in plastic while he works through the axles.
Hey Dan: I think I just figured out why you don't mind when I come over: I'm on PBB when people are asking you all these questions, and by the time you log in at night, I've saved you a lotta typing. :flipoff2:

I got that hatchet out just when you pulled up. ;) It worked because you didnt stay very long.:flipoff2:
Just finished pulling the heads off the motor and installing the front winch.
Looking at the pic (shocks) it seems its time for a front end adjustment. Ill put that on the list:p
Thanks for the compliment, joes75bronco

No unfortunatly we are not hiring :( nobody is. Right now is a shitty time to be in the avation industry. I AM VERY LUCKY, that seven years ago I made the decision to work for FedEx and not a passenger airline or I too would be looking for a job right now.

Dan Dibble 01-03-2004, 08:45 PM I passed two cops and they just wavied. I have found that if you drive normally (no speeding, burnouts, ect.) you dont have a problem. I have it registered as a 78 1/2 ton chevy 4x4 with some mods.;)

Congrats dude.
Todd W 01-03-2004, 10:09 PM Looks good...
Couple questions..
Is it your rig that is extremely huge and makes the links look really tiny, or are they really that tiny?
And from observation looks like your foot holes may turn into a good spot for mud to fill up and enter the rig :)
Sweet rig man :D

Sweet rig man :D
Upper links are 1.25 .375 wall 1026 dom lowers are 1.5 .5 wall 1026 dom.
The size of my rig depends on where you are standing, when veiwing it. If you are west of the Mississippi it is HUGE but if you are east of the Mississippi its normal size.:D
Dude Im not worried about those foot holes. If a cut bogger gets into the mud you will get dirty, regardless.
Thanks, Dan

Thanks,
I used a fuel gauge and sending unit. The sending unit is attached to the lower shock mount on the axle and is articulated by the knuckle. I had it working but I still need to get the length of the arm correct (ratio). It shows center real well but as you steer right or left the porportion is not correct. I have converging arcs. We are not shure how long it will last in the dirt/mud/water.
It was just a gee wiz thing I wanted to try.
Dan Dibble 01-22-2004, 08:33 PM Originally posted by ccrane

Chris.
It drove 100% predictable no suprizes. The donuts with the rear steer are insane on the street (I need to get a vid) It will plane make you sick. Driving in circles seems normal at minimum throttle but when you lite them up and the lockers lock, it spins on a dime (cyclone like the monster trucks).
Anyway I havent put it on the rocks yet. We are heading to Hot Springs for the week end so I should have some good pics and storys Monday night.
