: Rolled F-250 PSD: Engine damage?
89breaker 10-06-2008, 01:41 PM I rolled my F-250 onto the driver's side. It ran for less than 10 seconds before I cut it off. It sat on its side for approximately 3 hours before I got it right side up.
How do I make sure this thing is ok before I attempt to start it?
welndmn 10-06-2008, 02:16 PM Pull the glow plugs and crank it over.
GMCTruxrule 10-06-2008, 02:18 PM x2. More than likely, nothing happened to it.
After you start it, just monitor your oil pressure for a bit.
94stepsideford 10-06-2008, 04:28 PM Pull the glow plugs and crank it over.
X2, check the oil and tranny fluid before firing it up.
Coors 10-06-2008, 07:18 PM On the plus side.... You can't really burn a psd up do to lack of oil pressure. If it losses oil pressure, it won't run.
Like the other guys said, I would just make sure that you haven't hydro'ed the engine, but I doubt it. The easiest way would be to try to bar the engine over by hand first instead of going through the trouble of pulling the valve covers just to pull the glow plugs to see if there is oil in there.
If you can bar it all the way over by hand it should be fine

If you can turn over a diesel by hand your a stud. Just pull the glow plugs out and turn it over.

x3. the fluids are all going to be low. once it fires she will smoke like a SOB for a while, but it will clear up. :grinpimp:

Baring that engine over will not be a problem if there is no fluid in the cylinders.

I would pull the glow plugs to make it even easier, but yes, you can crank a diesel over by hand with a bar.
dahoyle 10-07-2008, 01:42 PM I would think long and hard about baring a diesel over unless you were absolutely sure there is no way it could start on you. Any residual fuel in the cylinder, or any oil that might have seeped past the rings, and you could well have a dangerous incident. There is a reason they call them compression ignition engines, you know...
skipped_Link 10-07-2008, 02:43 PM The thought is to turn it over & see if there is any fluid in the cylinder, So one might want to do it slow & with caution, if your going to go reefing on it with enough force to possibly start the thing, why bother baring it over?
Roll it over nice & slow, two revolutions of the crank, if it rolls over nice & smooth, check the fluids & fire it up,

If there is I can see a thousand problems comming. A few of which have a not so nice lloking outcome.
If you like your appendages just take the time to pull the glowplugs.
Coors 10-07-2008, 08:05 PM Well unless it is like 100 F outside, it probably won't try to fire. They tend not to try to fire if they are cold.

:laughing::laughing: i don't think there is any chance in the world some one could build enought heat/compression to cause it to run by hand.
just rotate the crank by hand or tap the starter with the ign. off to see if the engine will turn over.even if its not hydro locked you may have filled the intake and/or turbo with oil from the pcv, carefull that when you do start it it doesn't run away on you.

...not to mention the fact that this isn't a mechanical injection diesel...it still needs fuel to run even if you are spinning the fan blades like you're starting an old prop plane.:flipoff2:
Doubtful there is anything in the cylinders, but turning it over a few times by hand is a good idea.
How about the story on how you put your beloved truck on its side?
demonranger 10-08-2008, 12:10 PM the engine will loose high pressure oil and stop firing before there is any damage done to the friction surfaces in the engine from being sideways.
Remove glow plugs turn over by hand this will ensure that any oil that might have seeped past the rings while sitting sideways is out of the cylinders then throw them back in and crank it up. expect some smoke from residue but you'll be golden.

Let's just say not telling........I'm not going to deal with that batting cage.
Halogrinder 10-10-2008, 09:38 AM pussy.
89breaker 10-10-2008, 11:06 AM Nice try on the reverse psychology. No dice.
atila 10-10-2008, 05:59 PM Have a good size block of wood near you when you first start it so you can block the intake if anything goes wrong. Ive seen a big ass phone book nearly go down an intake on a 7.3 when the engine started to rev out of control.
Big91RustyBucket 10-10-2008, 06:39 PM Well with your 4 gallon trans pan it should be full...

just calling them as i see (read) them. big deal if you fucked up lets here the story. i have flopped my shit over a few times, once was my fault for being a dipshit, the others were just flops. :p

Yea, I think we all have. Well at least I know I have. Coming home at 4 in the morning drunk and tired as fawk.....put my truck across the center line, into a 12' deep ditch and endo'ed the fuckin F150 I had. Flung the aluminum toolbox out of the box behind the cab, and the spare tire out from underneath the truck so hard they both landed about 120' away. Talk about being fuckin pissed and embaressed. Didn't get a DUI or anything like that, but came pretty damn close. It's good to know people in the towing industry. I was dumb as fawk, I'll admit it, but I'm guessin I'm not the only dumbfawk out there who's had this happen to em'.....:shaking:
It's cool dude, we just wana hear how it happened.....
