: buying a runner....few questions
CulturedRedneck 08-06-2002, 05:48 AM right now i have a jeep comanche that i am trying to sell (i want to buy a runner) how are the four cylinder engines on the 85 runners?power? how are the transmissions? how is the overall toy with on and offroad driving? i am a little weary about switching from the inline 6 4.0 to a 4 cyl. the one that i am looking at has 230k,(rebuilt 50k ago) auto transmission, good cosmetics, brandnew brakes and rotors. she is asking 2000 for it. i would rather have a manual but you take what you can get. so how is the price on that one? is that alot of milage for a runner?
thanks
kohl
Bones 08-06-2002, 05:54 AM #1 Make sure you get EFI
#2 Get a 5 speed or plan on swaping out the auto
#3 EFI 4 cyls do real well IMO when geared to match the tire size I hated my old 22r that was carburated. Night and day differance IMO.
You are placing this in a bias forum though, Put it on the Jeep forum and see what happens :flipoff2:
CulturedRedneck 08-06-2002, 06:01 AM it is an EFI, wouldnt that be a hell of alot of work to switch to a manual? whats involved?
CulturedRedneck 08-06-2002, 06:02 AM whats imo?
Bones 08-06-2002, 06:06 AM A few on here have done the swap. Just find a parts truck with all the manual tranny parts. **cough**I have them**cough** I'm sure it's not simple and you have to ask, it's probably over your current skills.
Use the search, it's got all sorts of info to all your needs.
CulturedRedneck 08-06-2002, 06:35 AM you are propably right about the current skills thing. about the only work i have done is brakes, and my alternator( which is no easy task, jeep made them as hard to get to as possible) would the switch be all bolt on? also, what do you think of the price on the runner. and is the runner you have for parts drivable? what does it need? let me know if you have one that drives that you want to sell.
thanks
CulturedRedneck 08-06-2002, 06:40 AM also, what would you sell all that stuff for the swap for?
Bones 08-06-2002, 06:43 AM Sounds like a good price to me. Most people cream their shorts over a 85 4runner since it was the only 4runner year with a solid front axle and EFI. In 86 they went to IFS. Check your profile for a PM I sent you.
dknightd 08-06-2002, 06:50 AM A 22re with an auto trans is a dog. Much better with manual transmission, but still no race horse.
The Joker 08-06-2002, 07:49 AM Is this going to be a daily driver? And do you realize you have posted on one the most hard core wheelin sites there is? If you do a search or even look back through the web 5 or 6 pages and you will see what happens to innocent 4Runners around here.
I would not by a auto and I have taken on some projects on mine yes it is an 85 no it is not for sale. If you plan on tearing it apart and having a learning experience go for it. Do a search on USER "Booger Weldz" and you will see what can be done if you happen to get dropped on you headed repeatedly.:flipoff2: He does more drunk than well.....................anybody ROFL.
Good luck to you, but in my opinion Wait for an 85 EFI 5 speed it will make all the difference in the world. By the way I owned a 85 Ex Cab Carburated before so I think the EFI makes a big difference.IMHO
4wd Wolf 08-06-2002, 09:42 AM And to answer your question- IMO / IMHO = In my (honest) opionion.
And IMHO, auto's suck. Get a 5 speed!
Adam F 08-06-2002, 03:12 PM Get a 86-89 IFS 4Runner and do a solid axle swap on it. If you are serious about wheeling it, you will have to do the same work to an 85 as you would to an IFS rig. Only hard part is cutting off the IFS. On an IFS rig, you already have the wider rear axle, steering box is there and mounted. Just chop the IFS, weld on your new spring hangers and shock hoops, and go for it.
If your not planning on modifiying the rig all that much, get a 85 5-Speed get a body lift, slap on some 33's, regear, lock it, and go.
I paid $2000 for my 88 SR5 5-Speed V6, 150k miles
ROCKTOY74 08-06-2002, 04:50 PM what's up kohl? :flipoff2: you are definitely treading on thin ice here with a newbie question like that. (better hope SEABASS does'nt see it), any way you will want EFI for sure! even if it means a SAS(soliid axle swap). the autos are just complete dogs :( and IMO the 5-speed will out last the auto ten-fold, on a high mileage runner(like they all are)if that auto goes out you'll be doing a 5-speed swap or spending a shit load of money to get the auto fixed. BTW welcome newbie :flipoff2:
CulturedRedneck 08-06-2002, 05:02 PM thanks for all the help. i know the questions might be a bit rookie, but you got to start somewhere. hey, at least i swiched from a jeep to a toyota.
