: TJ runs but won't move???

Driving along and the the jeep just stopped all forward momentum (still rolls, even when in gear, but doesn't drive). The jeep runs and revs fine. If you push in the clutch and let out nothing happens. It doesn't make any noise like anything is broke and shifts fine. You can shift into any gear without the clutch as well. It acts like the t-case is in neutral, but as far as I can tell everything is fine and it shifts between 2H, 4H, neutral, and 4L. Anybody ever have this problem or can steer me in the right direction? Right now I'm at a complete loss.

Sounds like a blown tranny to me.

Either that or someone stole your driveshafts.

LOL, driveshafts are intact! A buddy thought that it might be the input shaft on the trans, but wouldn't that make a lot of noise?

Transfer case?

Wouldn't necessarily make a lot of noise is it's sheared. So when the clutch is out, engine running, you can move it between gears without any grinding or noise? If so, then the internals of the transmission aren't moving. If they are moving then move back to the transfer case as the likely problem, broken chain or shaft there maybe....

How about the flywheel - pressure plate bolts?

If the chain broke in the transfer case wouldn't that give the same results, Just a Thought

Edit: Just seen where someone already touched on the broken chain, That would be my guess

With the engine running you can shift it through the gears without the clutch. Does this mean that it probably is the input shaft on the trans?

It looks that it is not the transfer case, If the chain broke I believe you would still have rear wheel drive, I would go with the input shaft on the transmission

I have a buddy at a transmission shop, I talked to him, He stated that it has the be the clutch or the input shaft to the transmission.

The clutch in my sonoma went out and it did just what you described. no movement ,no noise I could still shift, clutch in or out,2 or 4 wheel, highor low range with no change. When I torn it down the hub that engauges the input shaft had cracked and broken free from the rest of the disk.

When the clutch in my TJ went out this summer it had these same symptoms, how many miles are on your clutch?

I believe it has the original clutch, so about 80,000. I appreciate everybody's help. This is a great forum!

check the linkage to the transfer case to the t case lever. i was driving along in my 97 tj, and it just stopped. felt like i was shifting the transfer case, but in fact i wasn't, the linkage came apart somehow

Mine didn't have any signs, got in it to go for inspection and it just wouldn't move. New clutch in the next day and everything was perfect. There should be an inspection cover that can be removed (bottom of the motor side of the bellhousing). You should be able to see up into the bell housing and maybe see if the input shaft is turning. This should help narrow it down, I think you should be able to see up in there.

if you can shift into any gear while the engine is running and not have to press in the clutch and the vehicle won't move.....................the clutch is not engaging with the flywheel OR the tranny input shaft is sheered. either way you will have to pull the tranny/t-case to fix it:flipoff2:

my old tj was an auto, i was coming out of a trail then it just stopped. the engine would rev and it wasn't in neutral in either transfer case or transmission
