Ok, I am adding on to my shop. The addition will be 26 1/2' deep x 361/2' long. I will be adding a lift in the end opposite of the existing shop. My original plan was to put in 2 8' roll up doors, but after measuring I am wondering if I should make one a 9' and the other somewhere around 10/11'. The 9' would be the door where the lift is located, and the 10/11 would be an open bay. I thought this wide so I could back my trailer in...which would be plenty big enough....Opinions?

Can't give much of an opinion without seeing exactly what you're doing, but I will agree with the wider doors. I have four 8 foot wide doors on my shop. That gives me about 1/2" inch clearance on each side to back my trailer in.... I've lived here for almost 3 years now and I've never put the trailer in the shop, I've always done all maintenance/work outside. I'd need about 4 people to back the trailer in by hand, which isn't worth the hassle.
Go with the wider doors, you'll never regret it.

This is the closest picture I have to what I will be adding on( wood framing, not metal)

My existing shop wil be on the right side of this one...I will basically be "extending" my current shop by attaching the two on the right side of this.....Also, I will not have 3 roll up doors or a small entrance door...just 2 roll up doors, and my entrance door is on my other shop and I will have a door cut into my other shop on that side.. The lift will be on the left side of this building, and the right side (next to existing shop) will be the open bay.....
This is an interior shot of my existing shop..I will cut the door where the wood burning stove currently resides....

This is my bay doors for my existing shop...

I will just use my exisitng shop for most fab work...new shop will be used for most mecahnic work...
So, with that info....would you do the 9' roll up door and a 10/11' roll up? The bay door on my existing shop is 11'...
Once it gets daylight, I will try to get a current side shot of my shop now, with where the new one is going...

I've got two 12' by 14' tall rollup doors in my shop.
They're a pain to back a trailer through if you're not backing the trailer dead straight into the shop, IE, there's already a rig in the shop on one side of the bay, and you're shooting to angle through the door to the other side of the bay.
I'd build another couple sets of those swinging doors. Obviously size isn't much of an object there in terms of overall cost to make it bigger.
I'd also like some close-ups of how you built the swinging doors.

Will do on the pics...Backing isnt a problem as the 11' door I back in at an angle all the time do to vehicles and a tree that use to be there...I am also a Class A cdl driver....

Ok, this is what I have come up with so far. Mind you, I am not a cad operater, nor do I have any programs. This is just straight pencil and graph paper. If ya dont like it :flipoff2:......This is going to be a "pole barn" type build with metal trusses. I want the poles in the ground before I pour the slab and then I will add the metal trusses and a roof then worry about enclosing it...I will be running 2x4's across the top of the trusses to attach the metal roof to. I have never done this so if something doesnt look right or you would do it different, please let me know and tell me why...Also remember funds are limited....this isnt going to be a 20k build....

Go as wide as you can afford on the doors. My door is 16' wide and I can back the trailer in, no problem, with a rig on one side of the shop.

Obviously make sure you do everything you can to keep the part of the pole that's going in the ground from rotting... pressure treat, external treatment, whatever.
I've got a 50' x 100' pole barn on my place that dates back to the post war era (that's post WWII). No sign of rot on the creosote treated poles, but I doubt that's kosher these days. The poles are just recycled telephone poles.
