for some reason I wasn't able to find this answer on my own. but i know a J20 comes with a dana 44 frnot and a dana 60 rear. my question is are they they same width as a J10 which is approximately 62" WMS to WMS? also are they 6 lug or 8 lug?

thanks!

Yes they are the same width and are 8 lug.

Edit: Actually they are slightly wider (and inch or two) because the eight lug outers are wider than six lug. The housing widths are the same as a J10 though.

Damn! Had I been here a moment sooner, I could have corrected you. ;)

62"?

I have a 79 J10 front 44,6lug,drivers drop and thought it was ~ 64".

I held onto this axle thinking it was a good option mated with a c&c 14bolt at 63".

There are also J20's out there with the all illusive 5.5x5 D44/60 combo ;)

TYPO...should read pass side drop.

Keith, tell me more about this J truck front 44 with 5 on 5.5. I found one and pulled the 60-2 out of it. Wondering if i should go back for the front 44.

Make sure it's open knuckle. The 60-2 should have 35 splines.

Steve.......tell me more about the 60-2....how do you identify it? Any way of knowing its a 35 spliner without opening it up?

MSXJ.....Dont know that much about em, just that they exist. Mostr I have seen had drum brakes, but some have disks.

If I'm not mistaken, the SF rears that were 5 on 5.5 were this elusive axle. Early 70s maybe?

The 60-2 i pulled came from a 74 IIRC. Easy to ID, on top of the Diff housing where it slopes down to the pinion is 60-2 in large numbers...that simple. :flipoff2:

From what i'v heard all 60-2 were 35 spline and offset to pass side. Also hear they have thin tubes.

Widetrack SJ axles are about 64", standard are 60". I have had a hard time finding spare shafts for my widetrack

i have the d60-2 in my jeep... and have a ton of research on it.. it was offered in the 70-73 jeep half tons as a HD upgrade.. they are all 5 lug.. all 35 spline.. and all offset to the passenger side.. due to jeep usuing different drivetrains... 12x2" drum brakes which are hard to find parts for.. and when you do.. are damn expensive.. for the hardware kit , which isnt made any more, i used one from a mid 70's dodge..
all of these jeeps had the closed knuckle d44 p.o.s. they didnt go to the open knuckle till 74.. when they converted to 6 lug.. and flat top knuckles..
the tubes are thin.. i cut my long side down 3" to mate with my d44 front from a 77 wagoneer... and like i said.. the seals and bearings are a pain to find.. since this axle is so elusive.. one bearing is about $80...
some early to mid '60's fords also came with a d60-2.. which have a centered pumpkin.. and are shorter.. about 63".. a friend of mine has one for his jeep.. came with a factory detroit.. he got it out of some ford work vehicle.. panel van or something.. i would have to ask him to be sure.. these are really hard to find..
and yes as stated.. 60-2 is cast into the top of the pumpkin..

I'm running this rear axle- the seals were initially hard to find, brgs easy, I later learned moser has them. the factory width is 65, take 6.5 out of the long side and you've got 58.5 track with a common 35 spline axle shaft on each side with a yoke just barely offset from center. As far as tube size, It seems like it was at least .250 wall and Dia is 2.75 OD, plenty for my light Jeep- If you've got a Jeep with 1/2" plate everything this might not be the axle for you.

While we're talking 60-2's here, I found one at the local pnp, what are they worth?
I'm only running a 258 w/ 35's (for now), and I have been going thru a few scout D44 rear axle shafts, is it worth doing the swap? Or would I be better off just getting some alloy shafts for my 44? (BTW- everything is fairly new in the D44, gears, detroit, etc.)
Anyone convert their 60-2 to disc brakes?
Thanks for any info, just trying to plan ahead.

They are much stouter than your 44 but it will likely be cost effective just to get better shafts for your ride. disc brake conversion is simple
