I have a flux core mig (120v) I'm playing around with and have been getting a lot of spatter and I think it's the wire. I don't know what brand it is but are some better than others? What is a decent brand to get assuming higher quality wire will weld better? I know Home Depot sells Lincoln stuff but that doesn't mean it's good and worth buying.
Thank in advance.

I use Lincoln Innershield and Esab (yellow label) gasless wire without noticing any spatter. How is your surface prep?

I've been practicing on scrap and some of it was oily and painted previously. I cleaned it up with the grinder but it wasn't completly bare. I'm going to pick up some scrap pieces tomorrow so I'll have some thing clean and pieces in different thickness to try. I might swing by somewhere and get some different wire as well.
I did notice that on some pieces last night I did have less spatter and good penetration. It was on a piece that had not been painted and was clean. The metal was thicker as well so I turned up the amperage. I think it'll take some practice but I figured I'd ask for some help as well.
Clean up the metal - use acetone if needed. Watch excessive wire extension - should be about 1/2".

Gas shielded flux core up in spray transfer won't spatter. ;)
Neither will solid wire in spray transfer.
But that doesn't help a hobbyist. And a 110v powersupply doesn't have close to enough juice.

And make sure the machine is set to DCEN.
You have to switch the polarity of the electrode for mig and flux core.
DC Electrode - flux core
DC Electrode + mig
I ran out of mig wire once and switched to flux core without changing polarity and WOW sparks and smoke like crazy. Maby check that.:D

Why not just get some 75/25?
