: D70 outers on 14-bolt?

I picked up a really wide D70HD from an '80 GM dually pickup and the hubs on it look really similar to the ones on the 63" C&C 14-bolts.

Anyone know if they could be swapped onto a regular 67 (or so) inch 14-bolt to "narrow" it? The spindle "looks" similar.

I realize that I'll have to move the backing plate flange and all, but would probably do that anyway going to discs.

Thanks!

Even if it fit the spindle, I dont think the flange bolt pattern is the same

Axle flange bolt pattern? Gotcha. I can check that easily enough. I have an extra set of 14-bolt shafts.

Thanks!

You could just pick up an actual C&C 14bolt for ~$100 and save yourself the trouble

This article (http://jeepcj.homestead.com/axle.html)
shows how D70 spindles were put on a 60 ... the easy way ...

D70 and 14 bolt interchange.

I happen to have both, here's what I know:

They both use the same inner and outer bearings and seals, so I *assume* the spindles are the same.

Axle flange bolt pattern is different - well, same pattern - but smaller diameter circle on the 14B.

So would it be feasible to say that I could put Dually 14 bolt hubs on a D70 rear with the D70 axle shafts to make a skinny D70? Just like a dually 14 bolt?

I have my own disk brake setup so I can change that easily.

I think Billavista just said that the bolt patterns for the 70 axleshaft are larger than the 14 bolt pattern on the 14 bolt hub...

Is the bearing spacing on the hubs the same? I know they use the same bearings but I thought one had them closer together than the other.

correct - you can't bolt 70 shafts onto a 14b hub and vice versa.

Hell of a good point - haven't measured that, not sure, but you're prob right.

Actually, I checked the flange pattern last night and on my D70HD out of an '80 Chevy K30 Dually pickup and my 14-bolt out of a '79 K20, the flange pattern is identical. Same circle and both are 8 bolts.

I had a 14-bolt shaft that got broken (long story) and took the flange that broke off it and test fitted it onto the D70HD hub and the holes line up perfectly.

So at least on these two axles, the flanges interchange. Rumor has it that the bearings interchange, now we just need to find out if the bearing spacing is close enough.

The '79 14-bolt I have has been narrowed the old fashioned way and is in my Jeep. Maybe I'll have to quit driving it and pull it apart and check this out . . . .

Jason,

That's very interesting. I just did some re-checking too.

In the garage I have a 1980 Chev 1 ton 14b , unk. 23 spline d70 dually (not U or HD), and a 79 Ford f250 D60 30 spline. The shaft flange bolt patterns are identical between the 60 and 70, and niether are the same as the 14b. The 14b circle is smaller, though it is 8 bolt too.
