: Can you swap 3rds front to rear?

Sorry if this is a stupid newbie question...

Could you not take a rear 4cyl 3rd and swap it to the front (flipped over) and then have an HP front?

The gears still drive on the drive side of the teeth, but maybe there are oiling issues? Maybe that's what the HP oil slinger from All-Pro is for?

Sorry if this is a retarded question, but I'm a recent convert from jeep land...

The way I see it not only will you have problems with proper oil flow throught the case but it wont fit that way. the ring gear is on the wrong side to fit in the housing if you do that.

damn...it would be cool if you could, though...

Wow thats Odd that you say it cant be done, because i did that, i had a spare rear axle and had the gears and locker installed in it so I wouldnt have any down time on my truck and bolted it in and was done. But since You "sparky " have so many more posts then what i do, well I guess I will take your word for it.

Teach me to not read all the way. oh well " *HIT Happens"

hopefully it does not take you 1400 post to learn to read. he is not asking to just swap front to rear. he wants to flip it and make a High pinion 3rd from a standard pinion.

What, you think your number of post's makes you smarter, I guess DRM's a genuius then :D (sorry had to do it :p ) . So here's a simple question, what is going to happen to the direction the axle want's to turn the tires if you were to flip the axle over (basically the same thing as flipping the 3rd) ? Huh, It'll spin the tires backwards. Now wouldn't that be cool, backs going forwards and fronts going back, then put it in reverse and you'd be a slinky, you low post genuius NEWBIE

Ok, I realize that I am now the idiot in the back of the lecture hall who continues to not understand, but bear with me...

FIRST OF ALL, I TITLED IT WRONG. I MEANT REAR TO FRONT (shouldn't make a difference).

So, I guess I thought wrong about "flipping" it so it's HP in the front.

Just to be clear, you could switch it to be low-pinion, though?

As I understand, this is weaker (same as HP rear) as the gears drive on the coast side...?

now you seem to have the gist of things. except that a standard low pinion in the front is not as prone to break as a high pinion in the rear. the reason is that the rear does more work and more load is placed on the rear axle while traveling in a forward direction.

So open mouth, extract foot, wiggle toes, reinsert foot.

The front and rear 3rds are identicle. The front 3rd in mine used to reside with it's Detroit in the rear of my rig. When I got my spool, I put the rear 3rd in front, and put the spool in my old front and put it in the rear. It's one of the beauty's of Toyota's. One spare 3rd covers both axles.

And Obex26, I've been here over 2 years (the count and start date don't show the old BB) and still don't have 1000 post's. It's kind of like watching the line the guy takes in front of you. Watch and learn.

No, that means just cause I can see it, don't mean I'll do it. Some day David's ball (or ball's) will drop and he'll come out here to do some real wheeling.
