: Convert to Top shifter, or swap low range box?
My current dual case setup came out of my 1990 truck, so the forward cawler box had the forward mount shifter in the tranny tailhousing.
I am wanting to move it to another truck, so I have a delima.
Should I give Marlin a call and get the parts to convert it over to a top shifter, or should I use one of my other top shifter cases and just make a low range out of it, and sell the forward shifter low range unit to someone who is planning to do a crawler themselves?
it is pretty much the same job.
all you have to change is the forks.
so if you have a top loader torn down it should be cake.
i would keep yours since you know if it is good or not.
you did assemble your own crawler right dave?
the only other thing is rewelding another keyway to another fork.
on the other hand, are late w56s forks different than g series trans, in that case you may want to keep the case with the trans.

Kinda what I was thinking....

But it was like 4 years ago :p

The trans has already been sold long ago, so no worries about keeping them together...

I may just buy the low range forks, I have a spare shifter and base plate, but I would rather keep the complete top shifter case as a usable one to sell ;)
Bones 08-06-2002, 01:37 PM I'd use what you have for YOUR projects. Then sell the one that needs converted and tell them it'll cost them $25 to get the parts from Marlin. No brainer to me :D
EDIT: I just realized it'd be better to keep the top shifting one complete for better resale I guess.
2stroke 08-06-2002, 01:44 PM this is what i just did. its kida a pain. if u have 2 complete t-cases no big deal. u have all the parts. change the forks and shift rails. grinding the foks down is also needed. the trick is knowing where and how much too grind off(trial and error).
Bill Collins 08-06-2002, 03:22 PM i bought a t-case with 4 to 1 gears from lance morin off this board, that had the top loader.the one in my truck mounted through the tailhousing.i did not want to take apart the t-cases,so i just cut a new hole in the floorboard(planning to go dualcases soon)and just bolted the toploader in and left my old shifter in.so now it looks like i have dual-cases:D it is not back as far as duals would be,and it is a little tight to get 4th gear, but it works...

Yeah. Sell it in Summertown. On the 30th. To... um... whoever happens to be nearby. For a VERY resonable price... ;)

OR
dissemble your crawler from the forward shift case and take the t-case off the one in the truck and put the two together.
