What rings and pistons did you use?
Are the rings gapped correctly?

More details about the engine.

Not at all uncommon for it to smoke.

Most rings take about 500 miles to seat.

Keep and eye on it though, cause there are "rebuild" that are not done right, and the rings never seat.

mine smoked pretty bad(like misquito sprayer bad) untill about 200 miles.. then it slowed down.. now at 800 something miles.. no smoke.. sounds like rings are not seated yet.

different types of rings require different prep to the cylinder wall.

actually, not a bad idea.

a few (like 5) years ago, i built a 383 for a customer.

He didnt end up liking 475 hp/ 550 ft-lbs of torque in his 3000 lb corvette... couldnt keep it on the road. so, he only put 250 miles on it before he started bitching. Never drove it more than 3 miles at a time, either. the engine never got warm, never got any rpm, never got a chance to seat the rings.

and he wonders why it smokes...

I finally told him to stop bothering me if he was too chickenshit to drive his car. took me 2 years to get to that point.

did you silicone the head bolts?

did you use steel shim head gaskets with no sealant on them (copper coat)?

did you have the block checked for cracks?

you have a lot of things to check....

change the oil, ASAP. try again.

ok i found out that it wasnt water it was gas in my oil which would be caused by either my carb or fuel pump right? how do i find out which one or do i replace both and now its smoking pretty bad when you rev it is there anything i should do.

I have never heard anything about gas making oil look milky.

Its usually water (coolant of some flavor) that does that.

But, if you say gas, a leaking fuel pump (and I am assuming you are running a mechanical pump) diaphragm can cause fuel to end up in your crank case.

As for the carb, unless you had an electric fuel pump that wouldn't shut off and at the same time were unfortunate enough to have a stuck open float, I kinda doubt your carb is a suspect.

You can get fuel in the oil by the diapham pumping fuel into the oil as GMCTruxrule stated. You can also get fuel odor if the rings have not seated--blowing unburned crap past the rings and into the oil...
