i have an extra ... extra cab... dont have enough body damage yet too swap them yet. here is my question. i bought the extra 1 a couple years ago and have lost the title. noo way to get ahold of old owner. what about the vin #`s. does it screw up your tile? what if i got pulled over and vin`s didnt match registration #`s? any 1 else switch cabs without a title?

i switched cabs without a title. but i had a slip from the wrecking yard with the vin# on it.

the whole ordeal was a pain in the neck. it didn't cost me much though(just time) and i'm glad i did it. they were checked by a chp officer one day that i guess was bored and wanted to cite me for something.

what i had to do was make an appointment with the vin officer. the one i went to was in redwood city. you can get the number from DMV. they didn't charge me but i had to take a day off work. what he did was check the numbers to see if it was stolen. then he attached a new vin number. it's called a blue tag. and i tore the old tags off and forfitted them to him right there. he was pretty cool about the whole thing. if i were you i'd call the vin officer first. they will tell you what you will need.

and also he gave me some paper work in which i had to go to DMV and get the number on the title changed. those suckers at DMV kept trying to put a salvage on my title and i had to argue with them to not get the slavage. they aren't very competent there.
good luck.

i would think that the DMV would be the best place to start for you.

the vin officer is a police officer that works for the state highway patrol just for the purpose of managing the vehicale id #'s.
the system in colorado i'm sure has differences from california.

i was just saying to start with the vin officer before thinking that you were in ca. so that the dmv could be bypassed.

i thought about doing that too. but you better make sure you don't get caught. before i did it i thought i'd look into the law i was about to break.(i like to know the conciquinces for doing things before i do them) and it is looked upon just like cracking an odometer and rolling it back. it is fraud. i didn't want to chance it. especially when getting it done right didn't cost me anything but time.
sure.... chances are you won't get caught but it wasn't worth the risk to me.

also i found out that there are secret places on frames and bodys on vehicales that the police know about where the vin # is locate other than the tag.
one place for example on the frame is on the pass side behind the front right tire and back towards the bed a bit. clean the frame and you will see your vin. there are others but the vin officer made me leave will he checked them so that i wouldn't know.

on the older ones like my 82 there is the normal one on the dash near the windshield, and there is one on the driver's side door jam, and one more on the fire wall.
but you said it is an extra cab so it's probabley different cause i'm sure that it is newer than an 82.

84-88's 3 vins...regular old rivits on the door jams and firewall under the hood, drill those out in seconds without hurting them at all. the 3rd in the dash, use star patteren rivits, but if you pull the dash you can unbolt the metal dash section the the vin# is rivited to and swap into another cab. there are no hiddin #s in the cab anywhere. the frame #, as long as it's your frame the problem, keep papers on that, if they donb't match so what? have papers on both and you are fine. I have stripped many trucks, there are no hidden #'s on these 88 older rigs. I haven't stripped the 89-95's but ask booger if he saw any, I have his old 2wd 1990, that was my buds for years, I will check it out as I strip it the rest of the way.
