I haven’t seen the van yet but I do have the VIN if someone could tell me how to decipher it to know what axle is in it (if possible).

Thanks in advance

EDIT:::
its a 1978 E350 4x4

The 4x4 vans were custom built so it could have any number of front axles under it. Since the Vin is for the orginal van it won't tell you very much about the front axle. Do you know what company did the conversion? pictures would also help.

Almost all the 4X4 vans i have seen had HP D-44's under the front of them.

I have seen a few 60's under them as well, but I would say 75% of them had D44's.

You should just look at the van and tell.
Small wimmpy looking stuff = dana 44.
beefy = dana 60.

8 lug HP D44 in mine. 79 E-250, swap was done by Pathfinder.

Anybody ever see one of the odd ball "V" drive set ups? With the two front drive shafts.

Depends on the builder I think. Pathfinder did a lot of d44 conversions. Every Quigley I've ever seen had a d60 under it.

There were some four wheel drive vans, I don't know if they were just ford, that had a weird t-case with 2 front outputs so that the driveshafts formed a v. the front axle looked like some sort of ttb bastardization, with a diff on either side.

the v drive was an experimental 4x on some ford vans - i have seen 2 in person. one was an arrowstar - it had very small diffs on both sides - they were aluminum - like the ranger d27 it had very tiny front drive shafts ( with a cv on both ends ) and a full time t case - the rig had a 3.0 and an auto - i think it was an 85 or 86

i also saw a ford e250 that was like that, i didnt get a good look but i looked like two ttb 44 on each side -

i have seen pic of chevy vans and a suv looking thing on the web - i dont know if it was a factory / dealer / aftermarket crap - but if you have a few extra ttbs around and a few 12 packs -- :laughing:

Never even heard of one of these before, learn something everyday. I wonder how the torque steer was with it, did it have a viscous coupler in the transfer case to eliminate any torque steer or was there a traction device in the front diffs for slippage?

That looks like the one I used to work on. The van I worked on was a ambulance over in Sundance Wy. We have a brand new Fedex 4x4 van in the shop right now. This van has the cleanest 4x4 set up I've seen so far. The front axle is a 05' or newer super duty axle and they built a four link suspension using the stock cast brackets on the Ford axle. I was thinking the "V" set up was maybe something Hurst came up with?

There is one in Pismo that is yellow and lifted for the dune buggy rental place on the beach. Looked like 2 dana 44 pumpkins to me! wierd shit

What kind of 4x4 E350 do you have?
This is my 2000 E350 Ford Quigley 4x4 van
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll262/SirToppemKat/Picture030.jpg
It uses a generic Dana 60 front axle with some sort of weird perches welded onto it and a standard Ford seal and bearing kit will not work on it.It is plenty strong but the perches limit the travel.I am trying to find all of the part number to totally rebuild this one after getting the tubes trued and gusseted and the perches cut for more uptravel.

Hopefully mine will look just like this
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd164/AMNESTYC3/wmlaniec-r3-17a.jpg

but have a hair more suspension travel while still being able to pull my 74 Bronco around reliably

That's interesting that you have a kingpin axle under a '00 Van... Is it HP or LP?

thats also floating around broncoII.org ive never seen one personally but i think the reason we dotn see more of them around is because it has to be alot of headachs with that kinda setup

It's LP but for what I would expect from a 9,000lb van full of camping gear and kids it will suffice once properly beefed up with some 20.5" wheels with 37" construction radials mounted

http://s290.photobucket.com/albums/ll262/SirToppemKat/?action=view&current=Picture036.jpg

I wonder who could help me figure out some longer tubular arms for that setup(Tulsa Oklahoma area for the winter)?

Not so much. Those companies have bought tons of axles for building those trucks. they still have loads of them laying around. Even Quigley was selling off D70 fronts a few years ago since they stopped putting them in vans. We bought 2 of them, brand new, at the Bloomsburg Nationals for 1200 each.

First place I would try would be Dana-Spicer. If not there, try lots and lots of search with retsin. Maybe shop manuals as well?(or supplements)

dans van was pretty sweet it was cooler with the 42in tsl on it however. the 78 is most likely a dana 44hd however it could be one with the dana 60. my 86 was a pathfinder with a kingpin dana 60, and my 78 was a pathfinder with a dana 60 as well

EDIT:::
its a 1978 E350 4x4all of the late 70's ford axles i've owned, including 3 d-60's, had 44 or 60 along with a code cast into the center section near the cover. crud buildup is usually hiding it. wire brush the crap out of it and your answer may await you.

so NONE of the 4x4 vans are factory? I see a few late 90's 4wd E350's running around with like 33" mud terrains on them. They're company vehicles of some sort. I think the 4wd Vans are pretty bad ass, it'd be cool to lift one some and put at least 35's on it and a bed and stuff in the back then you could use it as a tow rig and drive it right up in the woods and sleep in it during a weekend of wheeling or something, just a thought. EDIT....check this one out..paneling and carpet and all http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-Trucks___1978-Ford-E-350-extended-van-4x4_W0QQitemZ310127590754QQddnZCarsQ20Q26Q20Trucks QQddiZ2282QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash=i tem310127590754&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A7|39%3A1|240%3A1318
EDIT AGAIN...the 78 I listed above and a 98 I'm looking at on ebay right now were both converted by Quigley, as well as this awesome one. This would be perfect for offroad camping with some bad ass meets on it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-Trucks___4X4-E350-Ford-Van-Extended-Body-Camper-Conversion_W0QQitemZ140304779389QQddnZCarsQ20Q26Q2 0TrucksQQddiZ2282QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks ?hash=item140304779389&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A7|39%3A1|240%3A1318

Quigly does 4wd conversions on vans and E-450 buses. based out of York, pa. we have three of thier buses at work and one has an old dana 60 and the other two have superduty dana 60s.

I have an 83 E350 with a dana 60 done by quadravan.
The easiest way to tell if your axle is a sixty is to measure the width of the hub housing right at the back of the manual hub. If it is exactly 4" across it is an early 60, if it is much larger or smaller it will be a 44.:smokin:

What's your location? I'd like to get 4wd happening on my van too.

Has anyone tried stuffing the '05+ SuperDuty axle & susp. under their van? I'm wondering if its easier with both systems being coils rather than doing a whole leaf-sprung install.
