Hey guys, kind of a newb question but I am a newb to a 435! I did search for a while but, all I came across was whining noises. Anyways, This thing makes a noise that sounds like a rod knock in an engine at higher rpm's in all gears (gonna guess about 3000 and above? no tach) I bought the truck this way and had heard a story that it was being used as a tow rig, had gotten stuck,(slid off the road into a ditch in the winter) and was beat untill the output shaft broke from the 435. Any thoughts?

If you are going to keep it and run it then rebuild it. They are tuff trannies.

Plan on keeping it. However, it is my daily driver and I am limited on funds and time. Just hoping someone had had this issue before and it would be an easy fix. I also have access to a ford 435 but I'm not sure on how much of the internals are the same? One other question, it has the cast case and aluminum top/shifter mount but it appears to have a pto(?) cover on both sides? Everyone I have seen has only had the cover on the passenger side? Like I said...I'm a newb to this manual tranny stuff. Just trying to learn myself.

Keep it man. They are super easy to rebuild. Once you get the cover off you'll see what I mean. Novak Conversions sells rebuild kits, but I'm sure you could probably find them cheaper. It may just need an output shaft bearing or something along those lines. Pulling the cover of is pretty cool to do even it it needs nothing.
Sounds kind of weird that it would only make noice at that high rpm too. Does it do it in neutral?
You might try dropping the driveshaft and putting in gear and listening for the noise. It might not be from the trans at all.

Ford, GM and Dodge all ran the NP435's and all seemed to have different gears, with Dodge (and I think GM) both offering a granny and non-granny 1st gear.

Very slight noise in neutral.(think that may be a little slop in the t/c chain?) As soon as I shove the clutch in or put it in neutral the noise is gone. Took a while to convince myself that it wasn't the engine knocking. Guess I'm gonna hope it holds together untill I can afford a rebuild kit for it. Sometimes it's hard to keep my foot out of a built 360! I'm still used to a tracker and a 3.9 auto land rover (NO BALLS)! :p

Yeah, it got pretty confusing to me quick! I'm still not sure of exactly what ratios and stuff (gonna try to get the numbers off of the case tomorrow). Just have a buddy with a ford 435 and we thought the internals might swap over. Was researching on the novak site. Thanks for the help so far guys! I know how trying to diagnos something you can't see or hear can be difficult.
