A .45 Luger is ultra rare to begin with, then this "previously unknown" (http://www.elitechoice.org/2008/02/23/worlds-most-expensive-handgun-45-luger-carbine/) carbine example turns up. AFAIK, it's been up for sale for a while now. They want $1,000,000 for it. It doesn't seem to have much provenance for the asking price. It's one-of-one, so I don't know how you could prove it's genuine or fake.

Regardless of where it came from, I'd love to know the story behind it. I figure in order to to make a forgery you'd have to :
- Chop up a genuine 1902 Luger carbine ($25,000+)
- Have the original manufacturing drawings for a .45 Luger or access to a real .45 Luger (They "officially" made a grand total of *two* for US trials in 1907)
- Machine a whole lotta parts (skilled machinist)
- Get the "patina" of age/wear just right (artistic ability).
.45 Luger history in a nutshell

That's beautiful.

I hope I never have the kind of money it takes to collect stuff like that.

With a potential $1mil payout, is it really unreasonable to consider someone putting, say, 30% of that into the product to produce a top notch forgery?

My thought as well, hence my other thought on the matter being require an inspection by independent appraisers knowlegable of such items to confirm authenticity before purchase. Even then $1Mil is a tad much even iffen it is 1 of 1...

Perhaps I should ask the seller if he would be interested in purchasing my historic photograph of Georg Luger holding the carbine in question?

Meh, it would make for a neat range toy, not tacticool enough though, would have to add some rails to it and maybe a skeleton stock.

Because I like Lugers, and I've always had a fascination with pistols that were converted to carbines.
