: A4LD Transmission Question

I have a two wheel drive '94 Explorer with a new engine and new transmission, less than five thousand miles, rebuilt for my daughter who then decided to pull out in front of someone and total the body, bend the frame, brake the rear axle and springs, etc.. it's pretty trashed. She's fine, and so is the other party.

I don't want to waste the engine and tranny, and I have found several 91-94 Explorers CHEAP, with a blown engine or tranny, but most are 4-wheel drive.

My question is, can I use my tranny from the 2-wheel drive Explorer in a 4-wheel drive vehicle? Like can you just swap out the rear tailshaft, or do I have to dismantle the whole transmission to change an output shaft of something?

Pretty sure you'd hafta pull it apart. Frankly, the A4 isn't worth the effort.

you have to change the output shaft for a 4wd. and it is not worth the effort to do that as the a4helld likes to self destruct. i would find a sploder with a bad engine and swap yours in and sell the auto.
