Little background story on the moose knuckle.I like sandals and when it gets to cold out to wear em I put socks on and then start wearin em again.This project is a budget truck and is being done by a 17 and 18 year old.This my buddy's truck,and he's afraid to post it on here because he's not running one tons:flipoff2: and he thinks you'll tear him apart.

PROJECT MOOSE KNUCKLE

I'm now tearing into my once daily driver turned off-road rig, turned daily driver. I'm starting out with a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT. 3.0 V6, 4r44e, dana 35, Ford 8.8". Right now she's got her torsion bars cranked and a 3" body lift and is wearin some 33" shoes.

The little girl is receiving the axles from my Bronco, that were put into my Jeep. The front is a HP Dana44 (full width). I'll be running a set of 63" Chebbies up front SOA with extended shackles. The bronco power steering box with the drip pitman arm from the ZJ. I should be able to use my current pump.

we got the rear end of the truck in and almost finished today. Tomorrow it's shock mounts, and friday we're re-going-over all our welds with a 220v.

We comp. cut the fenders and it looks ILL. I could clear 44s with ease lol

My master cylinder was kerfuckulated. It kept regurgitating air into the resivor. So a new master later and I can lock up those 35s in the rear in about a foot and a half. Hell yeah.

Mitch and I tore down the front axle and gave it a good going over. There's an issue with the hubs. I'm not too worried yet. Next month I'll slap on a set of Warns.

She'll be on her own weight tomorrow, and drive-able by when ever the hell my lines and arm come.

No,It's been 35 here lately and that with the combination of being wet(rain constantly) working outside for 8 hours and drinking a lot of beers brought the crappy camera phone pictures even worse.Plus it was almost 9 when we took those.

Well today was the day it was on it's own weight again and DAMN this thing is big.He is about 5' 11".The springs are suprisingly flexy for being 3/4 chevy's.We are gonna take out the overloads and just run them as is.On to the pictures.

Hey, I'm Adam, the owner of the truck.

Shackle angle is a little rough. Around 50 degrees. We ran into issues moving the front hangers forward enough. I'm planning on swapping the top leaf for a caddy top leaf. It's 2.5" wide, like my pack, and about 3" shorter, which will take the shackle angle back a bit.

This has been a total budget build. I'm funding this project as an under the table guitar teacher. It's our first time doing a swap like this, so there will always need to be revisions.

Sorry about the shitty camera pics. We work our sacks off all day and finaly get to take pictures at the end of the day, and all we have to use are camera phones. Camera phone + night + beer = shitty pictures.

and to more tech, what caddy springs are you talking about ? you could use some early f150 springs ( 2wd ) as they are 2.5" and have offset locating pins. they have a few diffrent lengths

Step side I forgive you.I'm sorry this isn't a tube buggy with ranger sheetmetal and 2.5 ton rockwells with 4 wheel steer.I understand you want some good pics and I'll include them with this post.The first two posts I copied from the original thread the OWNER TYPED.I'm far from trying to be a dawg g or gangsta gangsta.We want this on the road bad but the thing holding us back is we are waiting on extended brake lines.We want to get some action shots on maybe monday or tuesday.The spring we are talking about are 55 caddy rear springs,out of what we don't know,but we plan on building them with the 3/4 ton pack.The main caddy spring is what we're after as it locates the axle just where we want it and puts the shackle at a better angle then it's at now because it's two inches shorter.Tomorrow we wanna get the steering done so it's ready for brakes,then it's off to a professional welding shop for everything to be gone over by a pro..As requested daytime pictures,we can't get in the back of the garage and get good pics because it's too crowded with random shit,you'll have to do with these pictures.Also requested was the shackle angle.It's not great but will be fixed sometime in the next month.Anyways on to the pictures,sorry for the second blurry picture,my camera was set in night mode and held the shutter open longer than expected.

The Caddy springs were rear springs for a late 70s IIRC.

They're 51" and have a pin off set at 31" on one side and 20" on the other. Or something rather close.

The current leafs are 54". The rear hangers are a bit off but there was no give room. Body mounts and a x-member were in the way. Running a shorter top leaf should pull the shackles back a little bit to an "acceptable" angle, as long as it's 31" on the back side to keep the wheel base where it is. Yeah, it's a back yard build. Sorry I'm not runnin Rockwells

Point of reference for you: If you and your buddy can jump up and down on the front bumper, and not have the front end of the truck move at all, thats a bad thing.... Actually it's not as bad as we thought it was going to be.We plan on building a pack but for the next month this is going to work.

We floor jack flexed her and she did better then we assumed. The extended shackles help a shit ton. Yes, the pack is a little stiff, but there's still tons of potential flex and travel.

This is my daily driver. I'm just hopin to get her back on the road before winter. I was fuckin around in a parking lot doing doughnuts and I ramed my rear end into a curb at 45. Gheto and I swapped in a 31 spline exploder 8.8" with a crap-lock and 3.73s. My old D35 SLA was geared at 4.10s and I was very short on cash, so I just ran two wheel drive for all summer. Even got a few trail rides in in 2wd.

Now that I have to axles geared deeper and with the same ratio, I'm just excited to get my baby back.

I do have leads of getting a free 88 Ranger, 2.9, 4x4, for FREE. Well, technically trading guitar lessons for it.

In case you don't listen A SPRING PACK IS BEING BUILD FUCKTARD THAT WILL FIX SHACKLE ANGLE AND GIVE MORE FLEX.EXTENDED SHACKLES WILL HELP OUT A LOT WITH FLEX WHEN THE NEW PACK IS BUILT.

Sure it does. If the 3.sl0w actually produced torque it would be bound to brake shit. A built 460 and 39.5s would be throwing shafts left and right with enough throttle, mollys or not. Skipping and bouncing the tires creates a lot of stress on the drive train. I don't have enough power to bounce, but that's how I wheel. Too much skinny pedal and you're on your side.

Whats your degree? Ill bet its not in Engineering and the highest math you take is what maybe college math 2....maybe. Just cause you go to school to change peoples oil doesnt mean its a real school. I guess it doesnt help the progress on my truck that I work evenings and most weekends.

We removed the over load leaf and the bottom leaf to soften up the pack. Some one earlier posted about moving the shackles to the rear. I've seen some yotas that run that system. How, if it does, would it help with the shackle angle. Weight distribution? I'm open to suggestion. A local place around here makes springs to what ever rate, length, what ever. With in the next pay day I'll be having them make me a shorter top leaf to use with the rest of my pack, which is suprisingly soft with out the over load and bottom leaf.

As I know, temporary things end up getting left. But I got these leaf spring axle changes down pretty quicly now after doing a few.

The front is just held in with a 110 gasless mig. A buddy of mine is a cert. welder. He's going to go over everything with a 220 when all is said and done. So no pictures of shitty welds just yet.

Anyways, now it's kinda like yours.....on jackstands, in the backyard of the parents yard........waitin on rocks or tons. I might just take it to the scrap yard and try and find one a little newer and build that one up. Mine's pretty rough.

The rear suspension is done and sitting on its own, and the front suspension is half done, lowers are in, so yea its still on jackstands up front.:D

Shackles have a little bit of travel side to side but hey, what ever works, works.

In the summer she'll be gettin some aftermarket Waggy lift leaves.

Either that or some longer shackles with a few more leaves pulled out of the pack.



The steering is a bit of a mess but it's functional. It's 1.25" solid bar drilled out and threaded for the TREs, and completely sleeved in .250" wall DOM. The bends were cold bent and I'm not too worried.

It's a mixture of TTB/Ibeam and solid axle jeep steering styles. The drag link runs under the leaf pack all the way to the driver side knuckle. A tapered tube insert is in roughly under the leaf pack on the passenger side and the Tie rod runs from there to the passenger side knuckle. So essentially it's inverted TTB steering. But fuck, it works. No bump steer as I've stated and nothing binds under flex. The TREs still have plenty of travel.

High steer is in the future.
