: Optima Battry Too Short
dirtgreg 08-07-2002, 09:00 AM This is probably a stupid question, but I was installing my optima red top yesterday and Its too short for the factory battery clamp. What have you guys done to tie these things down? I could put some 3/4" plywood under it but that would eventually rot and send the battery into engine during a right hand turn. Pictures would be key. Thanks

Either get one of those egg-crate spacers at any auto parts stores, they'll probably give you one for free, or I used some wood for a spacer. Just coated it well w/ rubberized undercoating so it wouldn't deteriorate.
sarge 08-07-2002, 09:23 AM if you look at the base of the battery you will notice two holes
on each side in the molding of the optima, the interstate battery
guy said those were made by the factory so you can mount it
safely anywhere! " for about a year now I had a block of wood it
did just fine but Im changing it now!:D

I just got some of that stuff to spray down the battery tray area, I'll hit a piece of plywood too. Good Idea, thanks.

Greg:
What you need is a chunk of 5/4 pressure-treaded decking material, about 9" long. It will never rot. No treatment needed, just drop it on the plastic tray, plop the battery on top of it, then clamp it down. I've had one under the Optima in my pickup for 3 years now, it's still fine. The one under the Optima in my old 4Runner is still there, I installed it in 1996!
If you don't have any around the house, stop by a construction site, get a piece of scrap off the pile. Problem solved.

I dont know why I didnt think of that. That stuff has a 13-15 yr lifespan, plenty for this application. Hey I may be in store for my first birfield change in hopefully a few weeks. Im picking up a a 3rd member with an ARB and 5.29's to replace the welded front, and I think I want to do longfields at the same time. Im proabably going to need some help, let me know if youre interested.
ROKTOY 08-07-2002, 12:31 PM I made a new clamp bar outta 1" square tube.
Notch the forward end to fit over the cowl.
Jay
TNToy 08-07-2002, 01:28 PM It's a little muddy right now, and it has the wires for my in-dash winch control ziptied to it, but you get the idea. A couple minutes with a vise, a piece of 1" wide steel, and a BFH, and you get this...
