Hey guys I'm a samurai owner, but I was recently given a free XJ power steering box like the one in the picture. I was told it's from a early 90's or late 80's XJ. Do you think it's strong enough to hold up to 35's on a samurai? I'd probably be using a Toyota IFS or PSC power steering pump.

Strong enough, as in it ain't gonna break? You're probably good in that sense - aside from just wearing out, the only other point of failure I've seen is at the sector shaft itself.
As far as if it's got enough power assist...it might. Guys use 'em on XJ's with 35's all the time but it's usually around that point that we start adding a hydro assist ram, for a few different reasons. If you don't have a lot of weight on the front end it's probably fine, and it's easily self-modified for hydro-assist if you go that route.
If you do find yourself wanting a little more oomph, a Dodge Durango box with a slightly larger bore is a direct swap (same bolt pattern).

Looks like I am going out and getting a durango box...
what did you mean about the slightly larger bore?

The piston diameter is larger so it has a little more assist power. I forget the exact numbers and I don't feel like looking them up. :flipoff2: Of course, depending on your pump this may or may not translate to slower steering response.
However, the gear ratio is slightly different too so it's got a little fewer turns lock-to-lock...something like 2-15/16 compared to 3-3/8 I think.

That box pictured is not an XJ box. Most likely a yj box. XJ boxes only have three mounting bolts, 1 on top and 2 on the bottom. The box pictured has 2 on top, like a yj.
